Rod hopes to be Sailing with Titanic

stewart2.jpgHe has left it a bit late, but Rod Stewart is reported to be looking to sail on a memorial cruise to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic next year.
The singer hopes to travel on Fred Olsen’s Balmoral, which has been chartered for a 12-night voyage from Southampton to New York next April – but it has been booked solid for months, and there’s a waitlist as long as a yardarm.
There are places available on Azamara Journey, which travel agent Miles Morgan has also chartered for a cruise from New York to Halifax, Nova Scotia – where many Titanic victims are buried – and on to the wreck site for a rendezvous with Balmoral and a memorial service.
Stewart told the Daily Record: I would very much like to be on these ships that are going to be doing the Titanic run. Amazing that next April, it’s 100 years. I’m just in the middle of choosing which one I’d like to do.
“I can’t get my wife to go because she suffers from seasickness on the Atlantic – she prefers a nice Caribbean cruise. So I might just go on my own. ”
There are two other Titanic memorial cruises Rod could consider: Saga Pearl II is sailing a 10-night voyage from Southampton to ports associated with Titanic, including Belfast (where the ship was built), Liverpool (where owners White Star Line had their offices) , Cherbourg and Cobh (Titanic’s only ports of call).
And Marco Polo is to undertake an eight-day memorial cruise from Tilbury which also calls at Belfast, Cherbourg and Cobh, and will pay tribute to another stricken liner, Lusitania, at a ceremony off Kinsale Head.
All the memorial cruises guest speakers with expert knowledge of maritime history, and there will be themed menus featuring cuisine from the era; boiled mutton, anyone?
Perhaps Rod’s best chance of getting a place on board would be to offer to sing for his supper. There would be no shortage of passengers prepared to sing along with his biggest hit, Sailing, or indeed songs from his 1975 album, Atlantic Crossing.
Or maybe I should put in a call to Azamara on his behalf. The cruise line’s vice-president of sales and marketing, Edie Bornstein, says she’s his biggest fan.

Is there any news on Rod Stewart going on this cruise yet. I have top bunks (I am going with my son) available in my cabin. I am 5 weeks younger than Rod, I promise to behave myself and I am not blonde. I would be able to get my vinyl albumn of “Atlantic Crossing” signed and would love to hear him sing “We are sailing…” ANNE

Anne, well at least I know another Aussie going on this cruise. Rod can always stay with me as the person I was going with can not go now. Ah well never mind I am sure there will be plenty of us Aussies on the cruise. See you then. Mark
