Egypt loses out to Canaries as cruise line cancels a season in the Red Sea

Interesting how cruise lines always fall back on safety and security as a justification for most things they do. As when MSC Cruises announce that they have cancelled a season of cruises in the Red Sea. MSC Armonia will instead be cruising in the Canary Islands and to Madeira and Morocco.. Unrest in Cairo and Alexandria has not yet spread to ports such as Sharm el Sheikh, Safaga and Sokhne. But passengers have voted with their feet and have chosen to avoid Egypt entirely. So the fact is that it's not really safety that has led to MSC's decision, it's [...]

Royal visit to Norway’s finest fjord is cancelled because of cruise crowds

Passengers who joined Queen Mary 2 on Saturday for a cruise to the Norwegian fjords were expecting to spend today in the beautiful UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, often claimed as Norway's finest. But the visit has been cancelled and they are in the pretty, Art Nouveau town of Ålesund instead. Not quite the same. Shortly after boarding in Southampton, passengers received a letter from the captain, Commodore Christopher Rynd, explaining: "Due to concerns over our ability to secure a safe anchoring position in Geiranger we have taken the decision to substitute our call at Geiranger with a call to Ålesund." Geiranger lies [...]

Spitsbergen: The Arctic island where there are no births and no burials

Temperatures in the 80s and sunsets every evening; just two of the things I've had to get used to this week after my Quest for Adventure cruise to Svalbard. They have not erased memories of a wonderful journey to a stunning region. I love the Norwegian fjords and Alaska, but Spitsbergen - with its glaciers and snow-covered peaks, an abundance of whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds - beats them all. I was fortunate to travel to the region when I did; new regulations and restrictions will limit the number of cruise ships allowed in within a couple of years. The [...]

Adventures in a northern wilderness

Quest for Adventure in Magdalena Bay, Svalbard It's a bit like boarding a plane. Most people turn right when they step from the air bridge and through the doorway; only a privileged few turn left. With cruise ships, the majority turn right when they leave Southampton or Dover, heading for the Mediterranean or the Canaries. A few turn left, to spend the next few days in the Baltic or the fjords, and in the case of Quest for Adventure this week, even further afield. After a sprint up the Norwegian coast, calling at busy Stavanger, serene Brønnøysund, and remote Leknes [...]

How to get your next cruise from Southampton off to a luxurious start

Many of the 1.5 million passengers who start or finish their cruise in Southampton each year (according to the latest figures) choose to spend a night in the city before boarding their ship. It makes for a relaxing beginning to the holiday, especially if the journey started with a flight into the UK or a journey by road, rail or air from elsewhere in Britain. Unfortunately, most of the hotels in the city are less than inspiring, and tend very much towards steerage rather than first class. There are a number of chain hotels, and the four-star option nearest the [...]

Magic comes home to Venice

Cruise ship Disney Magic came home this week. The ship, which was built in the Marghera yard near Venice 15 years ago, sailed into La Serenissima for the first of two visits this year, and it will return on three more occasions in 2014. Its arrival coincided almost exactly with the date when Magic left Venice for the first time on July 1, 1998. Almost 3,000 passengers spent the night in port and a lucky few were treated to a spectacular after-hours tour of the Doge's Palace.

Time for a gentle ribbing

Skimming across the waves at 40 mph, I'm togged up in a fluorescent orange survival suit and a self-inflating life-jacket. The wind is tugging at my cheeks as we race down the coast of the Lofoten Islands in remote northern Norway. Twelve of us have left the comfort of cruise ship Quest for Adventure behind for an adventure of our own, riding in a RIB - rigid inflatable boat. It's a soft adventure really. Little more than an hour on the open sea, leaving our mother ship behind in Leknes to take a spin down to a busy fishing village [...]

Majesty pioneers new Italian port

A new Mediterranean port will be pioneered next year as Thomson Majesty inaugurates visits to the Calabrian town of Crotone, right on the ball of Italy's foot. Once a Greek colony, and for a while the home of Pythagoras, the town has a cathedral which dates back to the 9th Century, and a 16th Century castle which now houses a museum. The 1,500-passenger Majesty will be sailing a series of first-time itineraries from its new summer base in Malaga, Spain. Crotone features in the eight-night Taste of Italy cruise which also visits Barcelona; Toulon, in France; Livorno, for Florence and [...]

Take two cruises to North Cape: which one offers the better deal?

There are still bargains to be had on this summer's cruises to the Norwegian fjords - but they are not all equal. Take two 14-night voyages from Southampton to North Cape which have been put on special offer by NoFlyCruising.com. Queen Victoria's departure on August 3 and Oriana's cruise beginning two days later have almost identical itineraries. There's £100 per person difference in fares for inside cabins and ocean-view accommodation. On the P&O ship, they start at £699; for Cunard it's £799. If you are looking for a balcony stateroom, however - highly recommended for making the most of the [...]

Voyages to view the eclipse are the hottest cruise ticket on the planet

What's the hottest ticket in the cruise world right now? Maiden voyages on the shiny new Royal Princess, christened last week by the Duchess of Cambridge? The 200th anniversary Transatlantic crossing by Cunard's Queen Mary 2? Oasis of the Seas' first European cruises next year, or the 2014 debut of Quantum of the Seas ? They are all proving popular, but they are being outshone by a number of cruises in March 2015 which will provide a rare opportunity to witness a total eclipse of the sun - from a position just off the Faroe islands - and the possibility [...]
