Voyager welcomes first visitors

Picture: Simon Brooke-Webb The first visitors are taking a look around cruise ship mv Voyager in Portsmouth this weekend. The ship officially joins All Leisure Group's fleet on Tuesday, sailing under the Voyages of Discovery flag, and is being showcased to loyal passengers, travel trade and media over the next four days before sailing to the West Indies. The ship will return to Portsmouth in summer 2013, ready to set out on a series of discovery cruises. All Leisure bought the ship - formerly the Alexander von Humboldt - in 2009 and invested in a multi-million pound refit of the [...]

Camilla marks cruise ship birthday

The Duchess of Cornwall is set to return to the cruise ship which she named at a lavish launch ceremony five years ago. Camilla will be guest of honour at a lunch on board Cunard's Queen Victoria on December 13. During the event, a reception in support of her husband's own pet charity, she will present certificates to 12 Prince's Trust apprentices who will have completed a period of work experience in the customer service department of Cunard's parent company, Carnival UK. She will also watch as a new official portrait of her is unveiled in the ship's Grand Lobby. [...]

Ask the Captain: What do you want to know about mv Voyager?

Almost ready to go . . . cruise ship Voyager sports a new blue all-weather awning outside the Veranda restaurant as its refurbishment nears completion. The vessel is due to arrive in its home port of Portsmouth at the weekend and will be christened by TV naturalist Miranda Krestovnikoff on Tuesday. Over the past few weeks in Portland, Dorset, Voyager - formerly the Alexander von Humboldt - has received a new Lookout lounge, a piano bar called Scott's Lounge in line with the ship's new explorer theme. There's new soft furnishings in the public rooms, which have also received a [...]

Scotland scores a cruise victory

I'm not just saying this because Mrs Greybeard is Scottish, but warm congratulations to Cruise Scotland, named Destination of the Year at the Seatrade Insider Cruise Industry Awards in Marseille yesterday. Captain Iain Dunderdale of Cruise Highlands (Port of Invergordon, above) was on hand to collect the award Cruise Scotland chairman Richard Alexander said "We were absolutely delighted to collect the Destination of the Year Award at our first attempt. This accolade is testimony not only to the hard work and efforts of our member ports and organisations that are very passionate about growing cruise tourism in Scotland, but also [...]

Captain protests over risk to ship

A cruise ship captain has fired an angry salvo of words at port authorities in St John's, Antigua, after his ship almost grounded while docking in the Caribbean capital. Celebrity Eclipse - a regular summer visitor to the UK for cruises from Southampton - was directed by a pilot into a channel which was not deep enough, according to Captain Dimitrios Manetas. After discovering that there was less than eight inches clearance between the ship's bulbous bow and the sea bed, the captain demanded a meeting with the port authority, pilot association and local port agent. His strongly-worded follow-up letter, [...]

Cruise ship repels pirate attack

A cruise ship has come under attack from Somali pirates off the coast of Oman. A security team on board Azamara Journey is reported to have fired flares to ward off threatening approaches from two boats, which eventually turned away. The incident happened about 15 nautical miles off the coast of the island of Masirah, in the Arabian Sea, on the edge of the area patrolled by an international armada of naval protection vessels. Two skiffs, a popular choice of vessel for pirates operating in the region, were seen approaching Journey on Friday. Each was carrying three or four men. [...]

Imperial splendour in old Vietnam

Back from my cruise to Vietnam on Silver Shadow and there's lots to catch up on - pictures from my journey, and plenty of news on the cruise front. In the meantime, to keep you wanting more, here's a UNESCO video of the imperial palace complex in Hué. Follow this link to see another spectacular video of Ha Long Bay. They both make me want to go back again right now.

Vietnam’s bright shining butterfly*

Cruise ship tours are, by their very nature, rushed affairs. There's a fixed number of sights to be shepherded around in a short amount of time. There's the obligatory stop for souvenir shopping. And then it's all back to the ship in time for dinner, or departure. That's just how it was in Ho Chi Minh City. So much to see, you would not want to miss Saigon. We had an excellent guide, with a sense of humour and an impeccable command of English. But the schedule gave him limited time in which to whisk his coach-load of Silver Shadow [...]

Hurricane Sandy sinks Titanic II

FROM MY DAILY MIRROR COLUMN. PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 17 It's difficult to resist uttering a smug "I told you so," but it's beginning to look as if an Australian billionaire's far-fetched plans to build a replica Titanic could be scuppered before they even reach the slipway. I am not the only observer to have expressed scepticism about Clive Palmer's proposals to establish a regular scheduled service between Southampton and New York in a copy of the liner which sank on its maiden voyage 100 years ago. Doubts were further fuelled this week by the announcement that a lavish dinner in New [...]

A floating gallery of modern art I could only dream about

It was a true OMG moment. We had just boarded Silver Shadow when one of my travelling companions rested her handbag on a side table in the central lobby. It took only a moment before her eyes opened wide. "Look at that!" she exclaimed, indicating a foot-high statue on the table, and the printed card beneath it, which described it as an elephant. It was indeeed recognisably a pachyderm, albeit raised on the stilt-like legs of a double-jointed giraffe. The name on the card provided an explanation for that - the artist was Salvador Dali. The attribution also justified the [...]
