Will Ruby shine on in Rangoon?

Mystery surrounds the fate of cruise ship retiree Saga Ruby, which arrived in Gibraltar today. The last passenger vessel to have been built on the Tyne, she has reached the age - in shipping terms - at which she should have been expecting a telegram from The Queen, according to Saga Shipping MD Robin Shaw. Ruby, launched in 1972, returned to Southampton on Friday after a farewell cruise that did not go entirely to plan. A generator failure forced the Captain to cancel the entire Caribbean itinerary and instead the passengers spent Christmas in the Mediterranean - taking a 40 [...]

Bristol fashion for Boudicca

A second cruise line will be sailing out of Avonmouth Docks, this summer, following the lead set last year by Cruise & Maritime Voyages' mv Discovery. Fred Olsen's Boudicca will be setting out from the Bristol Channel on cruises to the Canaries, the Adriatic, and Iceland and Norway. Welcoming the move, James Stangroom, Business Development Manager at The Bristol Port Company, said: "As the Bristol Cruise Terminal enters its second season of operation, we are looking forward to welcoming Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines," adding that the terminal had a successful thanks to its easy access off the M5 motorway, convenient [...]

Happy birthday, Queen Mary 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPHI3R-he8U It's a significant anniversary this week for Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2, celebrating her 10th birthday. There won't be much of a party when the ship returns to Southampton on Friday - that's being saved until May. But it would be unfair to let the event go unmarked, so here's a compelling collection of facts, figures and statistics. Since her spectacular naming by Her Majesty The Queen on January 8, 2004, Queen Mary 2 has undertaken a total of 419 voyages including more than 200 Transatlantic crossings. Cunard maintain she is the world's largest, longest, tallest, widest and most [...]

I could visit Shwedagon 8 days a week and still find something new

When the Beatles sang Eight Days A Week, they took their inspiration for the title from a punishing work schedule; they should have visited Burma (Myanmar) where, according to the Buddhist calendar, there actually are eight days in every week. True, two of them are Wednesday, which is divided into separate 12-hour days in order to tally with the eight planets that form such an important part of the religion and its beliefs. But eight there are, and nowhere are they more apparent than at the simply magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda, the largest, richest, and most sacred of all the Buddhist [...]

Roasting gently in the sun: This is how to spend Christmas at sea

Christmas on a cruise - despite my extensive travels, this is a first for me, and there must be many frequent cruisers who have never spent the Festive Season at sea. So what's it been like on Voyage of Discovery's mv Voyager? For a start, three days at sea in the Bay of Bengal, steaming from Chennai to Yangon (Rangoon) have been totally relaxing. No turkey to stuff, no vegetables to peel, no presents to wrap. All those tasks normally associated with Christmas Eve are either being taken care of by someone else, or have already been dealt with. Some [...]

Voyager passengers find plenty to beef about on their day in Madras

Visiting India is not a spur-of-the-moment thing. You have to plan in advance. To start with, visas must be sorted out beforehand, and every passenger on board mv Voyager had obtained pictures of the peculiar size and shape required by Indian authorities and paid £100 and more for the requisite piece of paper to be stuck inside their passports. Filling in the forms is easier these days because they can be completed online, but they still require all sorts of unnecessary information such as spouse's mother's maiden name, and a gazetteer of countries visited in recent years. In my case, [...]

Braving a tour by tuk-tuk

Tucked up in the back of a tuk-tuk is a great way to explore a new city. And then again it isn't. I'm spending Christmas and the New Year on board Voyages of Discovery's mv Voyager, and I will be making a welcome return to the city of Yangon, or Rangoon, in Myanmar (or Burma). We left behind a chilly London and flew overnight from Heathrow to Colombo, Sri Lanka, where the ship was spending two nights. Fully refreshed by the second day, we left Voyager temporarily to take a gentle stroll around the Fort district just beyond the port [...]

P&O targets the empty nesters

Looks like P&O Cruises may be picking up the baton carried by Fred Olsen's Nathan Philpot in targeting its advertising at the older generation instead of a relentless pursuit of a younger, family customer. Their latest TV commercial, which will debut on Boxing Day, is aimed at older couples who have more time and freedom now that their children have grown up and left home. It's interesting to note that in the 40-second version previewed above, the first image of a cruise ship and the first mention of P&O does not occur until 36 seconds in. Marketing director Christopher Edgington [...]

Take a look inside Bright-annia

Brighter, lighter and whiter - that's what the design for Britannia is looking like in this latest video peep inside the planning process, released today by P&O Cruises. A world away from the traditional look of some of the company's older ships and much different from the Royal Princess which shares the same hull design, it is more like the modern elegance to which Celebrity's Solstice-class ships have staked their claim. It's fascinating to see what hotel design specialists Richmond are bringing to the ship, from the soaring spaces of the central atrium, to the more intimate cabin bathrooms. Perhaps [...]
