Your Royal Highness, would you do us the honour of naming my ship?

It's a special honour for any woman to name a ship, and Princess Cruises were themselves deeply honoured that Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, should agree to christen their newest vessel. It was made to sound like an even greater privilege when the Master of Royal Princess, Captain Tony Draper, addressed her with the words: "Your Royal Highness, would you do us the great honour of naming MY ship." Kate stepped forward, wearing a striking black and white Dalmatian-print coat, her hat firmly in place despite the near gale-force winds buffeting the Southampton quayside. She accepted a ceremonial pair of [...]

Drink a toast in Crystal glasses

You probably thought a booze cruise was a ferry crossing from Dover to Calais to stock up with cheap drinks from Carrefour or Auchan. Or perhaps you had a two-nighter from to Zeebrugge in mind - packed with stags and hens who staggered off the gangway in Southampton or Tilbury bleary-eyed and nursing sore heads. Well think again. Luxury cruise operator Crystal is taking the concept to a whole new level. It has put together a selection of excursions throughout Europe this summer to satisfy the thirstiest throats and the keenest palates. Passengers from Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony will [...]

Voyager heads to dry dock repairs

Repairs to MV Voyager, which has remained in the Irish port of Killybegs since two of its generators failed at the end of last month, are to be carried out in dry dock at Bremerhaven, Germany. Three cruises have now been cancelled because of the problem, but it is expected the ship will be back in service for a summer charter with Always of Belgium from June 25. Passengers who were on board during the May 25 Celtic Treasures cruise were brought back to Portsmouth from Ireland when trouble first struck on May 28. The June 2 Heritage of the [...]

Disney ducks make wish come true

Passengers and crew on Disney Cruise Line's four ships have raised $14,000 for the Make-A-Wish charity with a series of rubber duck races in the ships' pools and watercoasters. The events marked the 30th anniversary of the Disney VoluntEARS programme, which gives opportunities for cast and crewmembers to donate their time to worthy causes around the world. On the ships, thousands of yellow rubber ducks were decorated and personalized before taking part in the races and on the newer Disney Dream and Fantasy, they were raced through the AquaDuck watercoasters. All funds raised from the duck sales have been donated [...]

Marooned passengers leave Danube

The 120 British tourists who spent a week stranded on a river cruise boat in Vienna were finally flown home today. They had hoped to spend seven days seeing the sights along the Danube; instead, record levels of floodwater forced them to spend almost all the time unable to travel anywhere and not even to leave the boat. The 110-metre long ship Filia Rheni had been chartered exclusively by Titan Travel for a "Danube Waltz" cruise, and after embarking passengers last Friday should have travelled gently to Passau, Bratislava, and Budapest. High water levels - the result of record rainfall [...]

Europa ‘for sale’ listing removed

With ultra-luxury cruise ship Europa 2 still fresh out of the box, operator Hapag-Lloyd has denied a claim that it has put its older sister ship, Europa, up for sale. A listing for the vessel appeared on a brokerage website, citing a sale price of €185 million and a delivery date of either September 2013 or April 2014. A footnote added: "Only serious interested parties please." According to the listing, the seller was CA_Marine Co. Ltd, a shipbroker registered in Syria. The Europa, built in 1999, with capacity for 408 passengers and 280 crew, has consistently been rated the best [...]

The total number of cruises departing from British shores will be 868, and they include voyages to New England and South America, as well as the more [...]

Clamour for tickets as Quantum of the Seas cruises go on sale

There's a full 17 months to go before cruising's newest sensation, Quantum of the Seas, takes sky-diving and dodgem cars to sea. Even before full details are released about what else will be on board the 4,180-passenger vessel, passengers are clamouring for tickets for its first voyages. The maiden voyage will be an eight-night Transatlantic crossing to New York, leaving Southampton on November 2 next year. Fares, released this week, start at £999 including the return flight home. A more typical cruise will be November 23's eight-nighter to the Bahamas, taking in Port Canaveral, Florida (with excursions available to DisneyWorld [...]

Fare deal for dinner, or a fee too far?

The denizens of LinersList, a members-only community of ship enthusiasts on Yahoo!, usually concern themselves with recalling memories of vessels which sailed into the history books years ago, or with lamenting the fact that today's cruise ships all look the same - like office blocks turned on one side. Most of them would normally look quite kindly on Fred Olsen Cruise Lines because the company operates ships - especially Boudicca and Black Watch (above) - that have elegant profiles and some heritage about them. But this week they are getting their collective lines in a twist over a new charge [...]
