Cruise ship gets the chop so Lions Gate will not be a bridge too far

Vancouver is one of the world's greatest cities, and the perfect gateway for cruises to Alaska. Just one thing - the 76-year-old Lions Gate bridge at the entrance to its harbour is preventing the newest and biggest ships from using the port. That won't be a problem next year for Celebrity Solstice (above). The 2,850-passenger vessel is to have a delicate operation to gently cut it down in size. The communications mast high above its 19th deck will be made to telescopically retract so the ship can pass safely under the bridge, which has 200 ft clearance to the waters [...]

What’s hot and what’s not: The verdict on Norwegian Breakaway

This passenger on the crazy golf course knows how to relax There was a lot to write home about from Norwegian Breakaway - although not quite everything was all right on the night. Teething troubles can send the best-laid plans awry and I don't know of a single new ship that doesn't still have a snagging team aboard putting everything right for weeks (and sometimes months) after the first passengers have boarded. No point getting worked up at the fact the wooden hangers in my cabin wardrobe were not clipped to the rail, because housekeeping had provided an ample set [...]

Norwegian Breakaway in pictures

Some of the highlights of Norwegian Breakaway. The ship is big, bright and fun and will carry 4,000 passengers a week out of New York to Bermuda, the Bahamas, or the Caribbean, depending on the time of year. Norwegian Getaway, due to launch next year, will be very similar, and becomes the biggest ship to be based in Miami. Ellie Simmonds, our Paralympic swimming gold medallist, inaugurated the ship's AquaPark which contains five watersides including the terrifying 40 mph FreeFall. More intrepid passengers will also enjoy the extensive ropes course which includes a zipline track and this walk-the-plank experience for [...]

Why Breakaway will be a big hit

I have just spent two nights in New York - without leaving the English Channel. From bow to stern, brand-new cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway is dedicated to the Big Apple - although it would be fairer to say the inspiration comes direct from native New Yorker Kevin Sheehan who just happens to be boss of the company. The ship's 1,062ft-long hull is decorated with pop-art representations of some of the city's landmarks; the popular Ice Bar, kept at a constant 17 degrees, is filled with ice sculptures of the Chrysler Building and the Brooklyn Bridge. Videos of the Radio City [...]

Magic makes a bigger splash

Cruise ship Disney Magic is back in Europe this summer for the first time in two years, and will be taking families on exciting adventures throughout Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey. The ship will not be going straight home to America at the end of the summer - an extensive five-week refit has been announced today, planned to begin on September 7 in Cadiz. The multi-million dollar makeover will freshen up the 15-year-old vessel - oldest in Disney's fleet of four ships - and give it a new lease of life. There's a thrilling waterslide called the AquaDunk, which begins [...]

First look inside Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway is this week's newest cruise ship - it will be bringing a slice of the Big Apple to Britain on Monday before heading to its home base in New York for a naming ceremony on May 8. Handed over to Norwegian Cruise Line yesterday by builders Meyer-Werft, the ship arrived in Rotterdam this morning. I'll be boarding on Sunday for the overnight crossing to Southampton. The £520 million vessel, which carries 4,000 passengers, has giant images of some of New York's iconic landmarks painted on the hull in a design created by pop artist Peter Max. Among its [...]

Magnifica is a Tyne record-breaker

The biggest cruise ship ever to enter the River Tyne tied up at North Shields yesterday, bringing more than 2,350 passengers and almost 1,000 crew to the North-East. At 92,500 gross registered tons, MSC Magnifica is six per cent bigger than the previous record holder, Holland America's Eurodam - which took me to Port of Tyne two years ago - and is just a foot longer than Queen Elizabeth 2, which visited in 2008, shortly before sailing into retirement. Magnifica, on a round-Britain voyage, is the first cruise ship in the Tyne this year; her next port of call will [...]

Katherine Jenkins to sing for P&O

She turned heads with her plunging neckline at Margaret Thatcher's funeral and a few days later completed the London Marathon in 5 hours 26 minutes to raise more than £25,000 for Macmillan Cancer Care. Both of which brought Katherine Jenkins a thoroughly unjustified blast from a notorious newspaper columnist. The singer's next move is to announce she will be performing on two P&O cruises. The Welsh soprano will be appearing aboard Oriana during two four-night party cruises leaving Southampton on October 31 and November 27. Fares start at £399. Russell Watson has sung on P&O cruises, and the line's Azura [...]

Even more fun in the fjords

You can cruise the Norwegian fjords at bargain-basement prices, as I advocated yesterday. Or you can pay rather more and make the trip in sheer, unadulterated, all-inclusive luxury. The six-star-plus Crystal Serenity is making just one visit to the region this summer, on a 15-day cruise which takes it from Copenhagen to North Cape, on to the Russian outpost if Murmansk, and then to the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The thought of watching the majestic scenery glide past as I sit on the balcony of my suite while the butler serves afternoon tea is making me reach for my credit card [...]

Carnival switches on fare cuts

It's not just the Norwegian fjords where cruise bargains are to be found - fighting back after a succession of public embarrassments, Carnival Cruise Lines have announced discounts of up to 40 per cent. In view of the engine room blazes on Carnival Triumph in February and Carnival Splendor in 2010, some observers are referring to the latest promotion as a fire sale - which is in dubious taste. Nevertheless, passengers responnding to the company's heavily-promoted "Switch On Fun" TV commercial (above) can pick up substantial bargains on bookings made before April 30. Flexible pricing means some prices are falling [...]
