US passengers running scared from cruises in the Red Sea

As my two most recent cruises have both been to the Red Sea, I was greatly amused by the reaction prompted by my friend Gene Sloan's report that Costa is planning to base two ships in the region next winter. His USA Today Cruise Log reports that the 820-passenger Costa Allegra and the 770-passenger Costa Marina - two of the oldest and smallest vessels in their 15-strong fleet - will be sailing seven-night cruises from Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt. The itineraries include calls at Adabiyah, about two hours' drive from Cairo; Safaga, about four hours from Luxor; and Aqaba [...]

Cruises with a difference

Cruising is not just for pampered passengers sailing to exotic destinations on a vessel packed with every luxury. I've just come across a one-day cruise with a twist - a special day out to celebrate National Marmalade Week. Surprisingly, it's not to Seville, where marmalade oranges come from. This voyage doesn't even put to sea; it's on board a steam boat on Ullswater in the Lake District. This food-focused cruise will leave Pooley Bridge, at the northern end of the lake, at 11.00am on Thursday February 4. Passengers will sample some of the best marmalades in the country, washing these [...]

It’s a first for Captain Roy

After 23 years as a captain on cruise ships, Roy Dearman thought he had seen everything. From his first command, MV Astor, through the launch of easyCruise, and now on to Thomson Cruises, there has been little he could not cope with, partly thanks to his early maritime training at HMS Conway, in Anglesey. But this week's gala dinner on board Thomson Celebration in the Red Sea brought a first. As he stood at the entrance to the ship's Broadway show lounge, his right arm feeling weak after more than a thousand handshakes, and his eyes burning from just as [...]

Indiana wants me – in Petra

It's a relaxing day at sea on board the cruise ship Thomson Celebration, as we thread our way through the oil platforms of the Gulf of Suez en route to Port Sokhna in Egypt. We left Aqaba in Jordan yesterday evening, most of the passengers subdued after their strenuous all-day excursion to the fabulous city of Petra. The monuments and tombs hewn into the red sandstone of a narrow valley hidden 3,000 ft up in the mountains may be familiar to anyone who has seen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but the moment when the spectacular Treasury first [...]

A warm welcome from Jordan

My mobile phone is going dizzy with text messages from service providers. Beep! Welcome to Egypt. Beep! Welcome to Saudi Arabia. Beep! Welcome to Jordan. The only one missing is Beep! Welcome to Israel, which is surprising, because at this maritime Middle East crossroads I can see the town of Eilat across the bay. It's welcome, in fact, to Aqaba, where we arrived this morning on board Thomson Celebration after leaving Sharm el Sheikh last night. On the way, according to cruise director Keith Maynard, we passed the spot which archaeological evidence is said to have pinpointed as the place [...]

Follow me to the Red Sea

I'm flying to Sharm el Sheikh today to board the Thomson Celebration for a seven-night cruise in the Red Sea. If I can get a dependable internet connection, I shall be keeping you up-to-date with what's happening on the ship and on excursions to Petra and Cairo. Stay tuned.

Carnival’s Magic return to the Med

Carnival cruise director John Heald was pretty excited yesterday - not because he is about to return to work on the Carnival Dream after his Christmas and New Year break at home in Essex, but because he was able to reveal ahead of today's official announcement that the line's newest ship will be sailing the Mediterranean in 2011. The company's withdrawal from Europe was a hot topic when CEO Gerry Cahill faced the Press at the launch of Dream in New York last November. Now, on his blog, Heald has leaked the news that Carnival Magic will be based in [...]

Christmas on Christmas Island

What more appropriate port of call for a Christmas cruise than Christmas Island? Well Bethlehem, I suppose, but very few cruise lines or passengers risk excursions to the Church of the Nativity these days, so the tiny territory 1,600 miles from Western Australia makes the most appropriate alternative. This week 1,700 passengers from P&O Australia's Pacific Sun stepped ashore, easily outnumbering the island's 1,400 permanent residents, and receiving a warmer welcome than the refugees and asylum-seekers held in a detention centre there. Apart from its name, the Indian Ocean island is possibly most famous for its population of red crabs, [...]

Postcards from Suakin

The children we met in the Sudanese port of Suakin during the cruise on board Spirit of Adventure were delightful - always a beaming smile and, unlike those we encountered in Egypt, they were not incessantly pestering for cash. They have not yet been spoilt by hordes of visiting tourists, and they were happy to see their own faces on the cameras' screens rather than demanding hand-outs. We saw no signs of the harassment and violence which the US Department of State cites in order to warn its citizens to avoid travelling to Sudan. Spirit of Adventure's managing director, James [...]

Choose a cruise with a view

Whatever the attractions of a cruise ship, whether it's built like a luxury resort or crafted like a private yacht, the real point of travelling by sea is the ability to go sightseeing in a selection of places all on the same holiday. Because your floating hotel comes with you all the way, there's never any need for tiresome packing and unpacking between different destinations. Exhausted after a long day climbing mountains, traipsing through historical ruins, or viewing museums? Then you can retire to your cabin, order dinner from room service and watch a movie on television. Refreshed after a [...]
