World’s biggest cruise ship to sail in Europe – Royal’s Allure for the Med

The biggest cruise ship in the world will be making Europe its home for the first time during summer 2015. Allure of the Seas, allegedly two inches longer than sister ship Oasis of the Seas, will be operating seven-night cruises in the Mediterranean from May until October. It also coincides with the deployment of brand-new ship Anthem of the Seas from Southampton, starting in spring next year. Long-anticipated - ever since Allure was launched in 2010 Royal Caribbean bosses have refused to rule out deployment outside American waters - the move follows a brief season of European cruises for Oasis [...]

Ballroom blitz on the way for Strictly star Craig and four P&O cruises

Strictly fans have a treat in store this year, with FOUR cruises lined up on P&O ships. The dancing-themed voyages will have more stars and more sparkle than ever before. Acid-tongued judge Craig Revel Horwood will be a constant presence; he will be joined by two pairs of professional dancers on each cruise, together with guest appearances by celebrity contestants from the hit TV show. Passengers will be able to learn to rumba with Robin Windsor, waltz with Ian Waite, or do the cha cha with Camilla Dallerup. Dance classes will be available throughout each cruise and there will be [...]

The Blog From The Sea of Cortez: Languid in La Paz and Mazatlán

It's been an ambition for some years to visit the Sea of Cortez, or Gulf of California. I have heard tales and seen pictures and video of the teeming wildlife in its near-tropical waters where whales come to mate and give birth, where dolphins play in their thousands, and where rays fly like underwater aircraft. Inspired by John Steinbeck and his 1940 expedition to the region, chronicled in The Log From The Sea Of Cortez (no, it's not about a piece of wood, as I first imagined many years ago), I am here this week on a 12-day cruise aboard [...]

How to avoid the vomiting bug

Norovirus, the winter vomiting bug, is not exactly rare on cruise ships. It's a frequent visitor - just as it is in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and anywhere people gather in significant numbers. When it turns up, it's about as welcome as Dan Evans at a News of the World reunion party. The outbreak this week on Explorer of the Seas, however, has set a new high water mark, affecting a bigger percentage of passengers and crew than any recorded by the US Centre for Disease Control in the past 20 years. More than 600 guests, out of a total [...]

Fees for dinner and strong Europe make up for Royal’s poor Caribbean

Royal Caribbean CEO Richard Fain had plenty to congratulate himself and his team about when the company's financial results were announced this week. Despite what he referred to as a storm of bad news "which would threaten any industry," - including a fire on one of his own ships and power failures affecting some competitors - earnings of $2.40 per share during 2013 were exactly as predicted at the start of the year. Increasing reliance on growing on-board revenue - up by 7.6 per cent - was one of the positive factors, justifying the millions of dollars spent on the [...]

Opera’s farewell aria for UK cruises

MSC Cruises have finally confirmed that they will have no ships operating from UK ports in 2015. When I contacted the company before Christmas to comment on a report I had received that MSC Opera and MSC Magnifica would not be sailing from Southampton, the official reaction was: "We have no plans to implement any changes to our ex-UK cruises." Well, it seems plans have changed. Today's official statement focuses on the fact that the line's "Renaissance Programme" to redevelop and extend its Lirica-class ships means the vessels will spend a combined 38 weeks in dry dock, and that MSC [...]

Free-fi is coming … slowly

One of the biggest bugbears of staying in hotels and travelling on cruise ships is the cost of internet connectivity. I have to declare an interest here - unlike most people travelling on holiday, I need to maintain contact with email, social media, and this blog. But even the most hedonistic passenger, determined to get away from it all and leave the pressures of work behind, might want to check correspondence occasionally, download a newspaper or magazine onto their tablet, or add another book to the Kindle's library. Hotels are moving towards providing free internet either openly or covertly; the [...]

More UK cruise passengers than ever before, but numbers will fall this year

Prepare for the unthinkable. After decades of rapid year-on-year growth, the number of Britons taking a cruise could fall this year. It's not something the industry is shouting about; the Cruise Lines International Association has forecast that final figures will show a record 1.79 million British holidaymakers took a cruise in 2013, up 89,000 on 2012. There were 5 per cent more UK passengers on ocean cruises year-on-year and the number has increased by 21 per cent since 2008. But I believe a decrease in 2014 is a real possibility. Capacity will reduce and the number of berths available each [...]

Red, white and blue look for P&O

There's a new look coming to P&O Cruises. The buff-coloured funnels that have been a feature of its ships for more than 80 years are to disappear, and the fleet will sport giant versions of the Union Flag on their bows. Funnels are to be re-painted in blue and will sport the company's familiar rising sun logo, which originated as the Oriental part of the Peninsular and Oriental name on its coat of arms. The new livery will be seen first on Aurora, following a visit to dry dock for scheduled maintenance in September. It will be emblazoned on the [...]
