Spirit of Discovery is the name chosen for Saga Cruises’ first newbuild ship, arriving in 2019

EXCLUSIVE: Saga’s new cruise ship, due to debut in summer 2019, is to be called Spirit of Discovery. The name is a change of direction from the tradition of current vessels Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl 2 and Saga Cruises chief executive Robin Shaw says the name reflects a transformation in the expectations of the over-50s specialist’s customers.

“The idea of a cruise being for people to get a suntan, lie on a deckchair and eat lots of food is gone,” he said.

“Our customers have a desire to explore and engage with new experiences, whether that’s destinations, culture, food or […]

Transformation and revolution promised and delivered in the design of Celebrity Edge

After all the pre-launch hype, generating excitement and anticipation without actually revealing anything about what was to come, the long-awaited reveal of Celebrity Edge could have been a huge anti-climax. But it surpassed all expectations.

This next-generation cruise ship will be transformational – the word preferred by Celebrity president and CEO Lisa Litoff-Perlo and her boss, Royal Caribbean’s Richard Fain. No-one argued when design ambassador Nate Berkus, who presented yesterday’s event in Miami, called it revolutionary.

The vessel, built to carry around 3,000 passengers, turns traditional shipbuilding concepts inside out, allowing for virtual balcony staterooms that simultaneously open up the connection […]

Saga has released images of its first new build cruise ship, due to be launched in summer 2019. The name of the 999-passenger vessel has not been confirmed, but it is being referred to in-house as Project Olympic.
Construction will begin soon at the Meyer-Werft shipyard in Papenburg, north Germany. It will be overseen by new build director David Pickett who has joined Saga from Carnival UK where he worked on P&O’s Britannia, Azura and Ventura.

Carnival builds new ships for Princess and Holland America; order book now at 19

Carnival Corporation has today added two more cruise ships to its order book and now has 19 vessels scheduled for delivery between 2017 and 2022.

The latest orders are for Princess Cruises and Holland America Line. Britain’s P&O Cruises takes delivery of a new ship in 2020, but there are still no plans for Cunard Line to add to its fleet of three Queens.

The Carnival announcement in full:

Carnival Corporation & plc, the world’s largest leisure travel company, today announced that it has signed a memorandum of agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri S.p.A. to build two new cruise ships with final contracts expected […]

Celebrity Cruises move closer to The Edge

The next generation of cruise ships moved from concept to construction this week, with the ceremonial cutting of the first piece of steel for Celebrity Cruises’ newest, and boldest, ship.

The company has been keeping details of the project firmly under wraps, but if the steel silhouette in the picture is anything to go by, the design includes an aggressive cruiser bow, along the lines of the most recent newbuilds from AIDA.

The ship, due to launch in two years’ time, will be called Celebrity Edge. The name of her twin sister, scheduled for spring 2020, has been revealed as Celebrity […]

Revealed: Sky Dome and Lanai Deck will be key features of P&O Cruises’ newest ship

Passengers will have to wait two years before they can book a holiday on P&O Cruises’ newest ship, and the maiden voyage won’t be until 2020, but the first hints of what the vessel will have in store were revealed last night.

The venue was the spectacular Sky Garden at the top of London’s Walkie Talkie building – appropriately enough for a ship that will have its own Sky Dome, an all-weather entertainment space with a pool and a stage.

The other main feature of the 5,200-passenger ship will be a broad half-mile Promenade – or Lanai Deck – that will […]

Proud Norwegian names for Hurtigruten’s striking new Polar expedition ships

Two expedition ships being built for Hurtigruten will bear the names of Norway’s most influential Polar pioneers – Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen.

The vessels, with a striking design created by Rolls-Royce in collaboration with Norwegian yacht designer Espen Øino, are scheduled for delivery in 2018 and 2019. A second pair is expected to follow later.

Driven by hybrid technology with the option for short periods of fully battery-powered propulsion, the ships will have ice-strengthened hulls and are designed to carry 530 passengers. Most of the 265 cabins will have their own balconies.

Large observation platforms will be a feature on several […]

Back in time for (almost) a proper ship launch

I’ve been travelling in the Med this week on board Carnival Vista – the newest and biggest ship in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet.

Today, thanks to Carnival and the Fincantieri shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, I travelled back in time, to an era when ships were not built in dry dock, as they are now, but on a slipway – from which they were launched into the sea rather than simply being “floated out.”

The yard, in the Bay of Naples and just a few miles from Sorrento, does not have a dry dock and does not have the facilities to […]

Harmony of the Seas is heading for the UK

Royal Caribbean took delivery of the biggest cruise ship in the world today when Harmony of the Seas was handed over by builders STX France.

And 2,100 members of crew from 77 different countries lined up in the ship’s AquaTheatre to watch the ceremony.

Harmony is a few inches longer than her older sisters, Oasis and Allure of the Seas, and measures 227,000 gross tons, against the 225,000 tons of her predecessors.

The 5,479-passenger ship has a number of innovations including the tallest slide at sea, Ultimate Abyss, which plunges 10 decks from the Pool deck to the Boardwalk.

Its 23 swimming pools, […]
