Disney bought the Marvel Comics empire for $4 billion earlier this week, and it hasn’t taken long for a Disney cruise ship to become a super-hero.
Early this morning, crew from the Disney Wonder rescued a passenger who appears to have jumped from another ship, the Carnival Sensation, off the coast of Florida.
The man had been treading water for about an hour-and-a-half, and another passenger on the Sensation told a Florida TV station she had heard him arguing with a woman just before he went in the water.
“He threatened to jump, and she said, ‘Go ahead,’ and he did,” passenger Marie McDonald told Orlando’s Local 6 News. “Then we heard the man screaming, ‘Help! Help!”‘
The rescue was reported live on Twitter by a Disney passenger from Boston, who calls himself BigHeadDennis, and says he is “just another boring suburban dad, with two gorgeous young daughters and a surprisingly supportive wife”
“A (drunk?) guy fell off a nearby Carnival ship. We could hear his screaming from the water. We stopped and dropped a lifeboat overboard,” he tweeted. “The Captain got onto the PA system and asked everyone to keep quiet, so the lifeboat crew could pinpoint the guy from his yelling. They scooped him up from the water before the Coast Guard helicopter even reached us.”
Both ships were about 17 miles from Port Canaveral, near the end of cruises to the Bahamas. The man was taken to hospital for treatment.
Disney spokeswoman Rena Langley said: “We’re incredibly proud of our crew members who were able to locate the individual in distress and bring him safely aboard the Disney Wonder,”
