If you have just spent millions of dollars on new facilities at your private resort on the Caribbean island of Haiti, then it’s only natural that you want to show it off.
Royal Caribbean bosses Richard Fain and Adam Goldstein were particularly pleased that the guest of honour they showed round Labadee at the weekend was former US president Bill Clinton, now a UN envoy to Haiti. So delighted in fact, that they both wrote about the visit on their blogs.
The company has recently upgraded the popular resort – which caters exclusively for cruise ship passengers – with new restaurants and shops, an alpine roller-coaster and a breathtaking zipwire ride. More millions are being spent on a new pier to accommodate Oasis of the Seas, which will deliver 5,400 passengers at a time to the resort.
The visit was scheduled to last an hour, but Clinton ended up spending two-and-a-half hours on his tour, and Fain was touched by the former president’s charm and consideration.
“We were shopping in the artisan’s market and I asked the shopkeeper if he had a certain piece in the shape of a frog because my wife collects frogs. He didn’t and we moved on.
“Some time later, President Clinton came up to me and handed me a soapstone frog he had found in a later shop. Now that’s delivering the WOW.”
Goldstein used his blog report to defend criticisms of the $35 charge levied on the Dragon’s Tail coaster – a three-minute ride that is effectively a sledge on rails.
So definitely no jokes about going downhill fast, please.
