While the attention of the cruise world is focussed on Norwegian Epic – I’m flying to join her in Rotterdam in the morning – one group of enthusiasts is determined that the once-great liner Queen Elizabeth 2 will not be forgotten.
Members of TheQE2Story.com internet forum are planning to sail to the Cunard legend’s birthplace on the River Clyde next weekend, aboard the historic paddle steamer Waverley.
On Saturday they will be sailing “doon the watter” past the former John Brown shipyard, and on to Tignabruaich. On Sunday they are planning to pay homage at Clydebank’s Titan crane, and they will raise a glass to the QE2 from the slipway on which her hull was built.
Members of the forum include former passengers, officers and crew, maritime historians and authors. Founder Rob Lightbody says: “The original purpose of the discussion forum was to keep the QE2’s legendary story alive after she retired and disappeared from view. However, with the current uncertainty and confusion over the ship’s future we also serve as a news and resource hub on the internet.
“Our members are from all over the world and some met on board the ship. Some have only met online since QE2 retired, and this will be a chance for us all to come together and share our memories and stories in person.
“Many people don’t realise that plans for the ship’s conversion into a hotel in Dubai are completely suspended. She is still intact – even her engines are running – but they are trying to find a new project for her somewhere in the world.
“We feel it is important to help get the word out that she is looking for a new home and has not been forgotten.”
