There can’t have been many football fans who were shocked this morning when the news finally came through that Liverpool and manager Roy Hodgson were parting company.
But one man who appears to have been taken by surprise is Kenny Dalglish, who is taking over the team until the end of the season. The Anfield legend was enjoying a working holiday in the Gulf as a guest host with 290 passengers on board the ultra-luxury cruise ship Silver Wind.
He had to pack his bags quickly today in order to jump ship in Bahrain and catch a flight back to the UK so he can take charge at tomorrow’s third-round FA Cup tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford – so quickly that he left some laundry behind on the ship.
Dalglish, now 59, won eight league titles with Liverpool as a player and manager, and was last in charge of the club from 1985 to 1991. He was appointed a club ambassador by former manager Rafa Benitez in 2009.
Trudy Redfern, UK and Ireland managing director for Silversea, on board the Silver Wind with Dalglish for the seven-day cruise from Dubai said: “It’s been a major coup and a pleasure to have someone of Kenny’s calibre as part of Silversea’s Enrichment programme.
“The guests have been enamoured with his warm personality and amazing achievements. We wish him well in his new role and look forward to welcoming him back to Silversea in the near future.”
Looks like the appreciation works both ways. Kenny’s wife Marina sent a message to her followers on Twitter earlier, which said: “Trudy Redfern on Silversea Cruises has been a star and she is a Liverpool supporter.”
And the passengers will be heading into Dubai today in search of a bar where they can watch the game on television.
