Video kills the trattoria star

//Video kills the trattoria star

Sabatini’s, the Italian speciality restaurant on board most Princess cruise ships, is one of my favourite dining venues at sea. It has just up-dated its menu, and it was a relief to see that the change has not been taken as an opportunity to increase the $20 cover charge.
New on the antipasti list are soft-shelled crab, twice-baked artichoke soufflé and a wild mushroom tart with parmesan and saffron fondue. In come grilled langoustines, duck with fava beans and chicken skewers with soft sage polenta on the main course menu.
I’m licking my lips already, and I can see that next time I cruise with Princess it’s going to be difficult to avoid piling on the pounds again, just as I did on Diamond Princess in Alaska last year.
However, the video (above) which Princess has produced to show off the new menu – with a voice-over more unctuous than a gallon of olive oil and sweeter than caramello forte mixed with honey – might just induce a bout of bulimia. And do you know of any real people who behave like the models at these tables? Maybe the marionette strings which control their movements have been digitally air-brushed from the picture.
I hope I don’t meet any of them when I’m next in Sabatini’s, or I might have to give them a (veal) chop.

    Just got back from this cruise and ate at Sabatini’s twice. The twice baked artichoke soffle was to die for, and if I had eaten one more, I just might have!
