Singer Mariah Carey may have been godmother, and uttered the time-honoured words “May God bless this ship and all who sail on it,” but it was her husband Nick Cannon, helped by Minnie Mouse, who got to smash a Champagne bottle against the side of Disney Fantasy.
The cruise ship was christened yesterday in Manhattan and Carey led an audience of VIP guests in the countdown in its three-deck atrium as a six-foot tall bottle erupted in a shower of confetti.
On stage in the ship’s theatre she had earlier sung “I’m a Native New Yorker,” and told the audience she was “going to love bringing my babies here.” Her twins are less than a year old.
Also taking part in the ceremony was Jerry Seinfeld, who may be lucky to be invited back after joking: “I’m on a boat. Finally I get to see what the end of my career is like.”
Thanks to my pal Scott in New Jersey for his picture of Disney Fantasy arriving at the Manhattan Piers earlier this week. I’ll get a chance to take a closer look during a three-day preview cruise later in the month, before the ship embarks on its maiden voyage from Port Canaveral on March 31.
