Sea trials for two cruise newcomers

breakawaybridge.jpgAs Royal Princess enters the second day of her sea trials in the Adriatic Sea, Norwegian Breakaway (above) has returned to Bremerhaven from her trials in the North Sea.
Breakaway spent much of this week sailing off the coasts of Norway and Denmark, testing her manoeuvrability and speed. Under the control of a captain from builders Meyer-Werft, the ship carried out a crash-stop test to discover how quickly it could be brought from full speed ahead to a full stop.
It was also put through a Williamson Turn – the manoeuvre used to bring it back to a fixed point on the occasion of a man overboard, and an extensive zig-zag test.
Noise and vibration were recorded throughout the ship, and wind velocity measured on the open decks. Norwegian Cruise Line has reported the results of the sea trials were “extraordinary.”
Meyer-Werft is scheduled to officially hand the ship over to NCL on April 25. It will visit Southampton on April 29 before heading for New York and a naming ceremony on May 8.
Meanwhile, Captain Tony Draper is watching anxiously on the bridge of Royal Princess as a captain from Fincantieri puts Royal Princess through her paces. Only days ago, as I toured the ship in Monfalcone, it was still tethered to the quayside by a complex network of cables, pipes and scaffolding; all of that has been removed so the ship could take to the sea.
Princess officials will be keen to learn the aerodynamic effects of the SeaWalk platform projecting 28 feet from the side of the ship, 128 feet above the waterline.
