If you’re going to put dodgem cars on a cruise ship, then the best thing is you get to drive them and play with them. That’s what top executives from Royal Caribbean and their German shipbuilders have been doing – and it looks like they had a great time.
The dodgems – a first at sea – will be on Quantum of the Seas which launches later this year, and sister ship Anthem of the Seas, which will be sailing out of Southampton in 2015.
Under the guise of deciding what surface to use for the dodgem rink and what colour the cars should be (although they still refer to them as bumper cars) Royal Caribbean President and CEO Adam Goldstein showed his competitive spirit by bashing Newbuild project manager Denise Key-Tielebein off the floor. And Bernard Meyer, managing partner of the Meyer-Werft yard, showed that Germans do have a sense of humour.
It’s comforting to know that every detail of the new ships is being considered at such a high level. Let’s hope the passengers get to have just as much fun.
