My favourite cruise ship restaurants

//My favourite cruise ship restaurants

As part of its coverage of National Cruise Week, the Daily Mirror wanted me to tell them about my favourite restaurants at sea. It was a tough call, but I eventually settled on these two …

Ji Ji Asian Kitchen

Every night is party night in Ji Ji’s Asian Kitchen, a restaurant where it’s best to turn up in a group and let each person at the table choose a dish for everyone to share. Start with slow-braised pork belly, Nanjing-style duck, and tamarind and shrimp soup before moving on to Chairman Mao’s Master stuck pig, Kung Pao chicken, and Singapore chili shrimp. The restaurant was introduced on Carnival Sunshine and will be a feature of next year’s new Carnival Vista, launching in May. There’s a $15 per head cover charge – you get a banquet for the cost of a takeaway snack.

Silk Road

The a la carte dinner at Nobu Matsuhisa’s restaurant in London’s Park Lane starts at £85 a head; the sushi rolls are £7.50 and upwards. The menu in his Silk Road restaurants on ultra-luxury cruise ships Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity is not quite as extensive, but it contains his signature blackened cod, the Wagyu beef, and bento box selections. It comes at no extra cost – for the first dinner per cruise at least. There’s a token cover charge for passengers wanting to return. If the main restaurant is fully booked, just sit at the bar and work your way through the fresh sashimi prepared right in front of you.
