Cristal clears the way for Cuba

With the United States trade embargo against Cuba still stubbornly in place - despite being ruled illegal by the United Nations - there are few opportunities to cruise to the island, none of them on ships whose operators have any links with the US. I was there a couple of years ago on Saga Pearl II, and Thomson Dream - which also visited Havana in 2011 - will be back there in November. Star Flyer, the 170-passenger sailing vessel, will be including a number of cruises to Cuban ports in its 2014 itinerary. Now, according to Cruise Industry News, Louis [...]

Eddie goes from bed to verse

By day - and night - Eddie Thomson is hotel director on board MV Voyager, currently in South America on its lengthy maiden voyage after being christened in Portsmouth at the beginning of December. In his spare moments Eddie, whose career has taken him to sea with Cunard, Royal Caribbean and Renaissance Cruises, finds time to put pen to paper now and again. A couple of years ago he compiled his reminiscences into an entertaining little volume called What Time's The Midnight Buffet?. He became Jim McCabe and his supposed employers were Scotia Cruises, but as the book's blurb explained, [...]

French yachtsman Alain Delord, snatched from the southern ocean after spending three days in a liferaft, has been landed safely ashore in Hobart, Tasmania. He had the good fortune to be plucked to safety by the Orion, ranked the second-most luxurious expedition cruise ship in the world by the Berlitz Guide. It's a good job he wasn't waiting for the most luxurious expedition ship - Silver Explorer was undergoing repairs after itself being hit by a giant wave. Once safely [...]

War of words over Royal Navy’s ‘rescue’ of cruise ship in Antarctica

Don't be surprised if relations between Norway's Hurtigruten and our Royal Navy are a little frosty today. There's a minor war of words taking place over claims that ice patrol ship HMS Protector had to rescue expedition ship Fram, carrying 202 passengers in Antarctic waters. The story began when the Navy announced yesterday, under a headline proclaiming ICE PATROL SHIP FREES TRAPPED CRUISE LINER, that MS Fram had been surrounded by densely packed ice up to four metres thick. The story was quickly picked up by the BBC and several news outlets - including Captain Greybeard. Protector, described as the [...]

The Royal Navy's claims in this report have been disputed by Hurtigruten. For an updated version, go to WAR OF WORDS A Royal Navy icebreaker has come to the rescue of a cruise ship trapped in Antarctica. HMS Protector broke through densely-packed ice up to four metres thick surrounding the bow of Hurtigruten expedition ship Fram, The vessel, which carries about 250 passengers, was led to safety in an operation that lasted about two hours. UK actors get a chance to Razzle Dazzle ’em in the best shows at sea

The West End musical shows on three of Royal Caribbean's cruise ships are some of the best entertainment to be found at sea. Almost full length, and with top production values, they are a world away from the 30 or 40-minute singing-by-numbers shows built around a theme or a composer which are the staple theatre diet on many ships, and which have done much to foster Simon Cowell's contempt for cruise ship singers. When I saw the premieres of Hairspray on Oasis of the Seas, and Chicago a year later on Allure of the Seas, I was delighted to discover [...]

Cruise ships to the rescue

PICTURE: Orion Expedition Cruises A French yachtsman who spent three days adrift in a liferaft in the Southern Ocean has been rescued by the cruise ship Orion. Alain Delord was attempting a solo round-the-world voyage when his mast broke during a storm on Friday. He abandoned the vessel 500 nautical miles from Tasmania and activated his emergency beacon. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) was able to drop food, water and a survival suit, but the location was too remote for a rescue helicopter. The Orion, returning from a cruise to Antarctica with 100 passengers and 80 crew on board, [...]

Five-star future for hotel QE2

Supporters of the London bid to rescue the QE2 seem reluctant to accept the new deal announced today which will take the ship from Dubai to the Far East. Rob Lightbody, of TheQE2Story.com, said: "I'll believe it when I see it because Dubai have a very very poor record of announcing things that actually happen." Even as the ship was under tow on its way to dry dock, he added: "It's been three-and-a-half years since she last had one. If she has anything more than a clean and check-up, I'll eat my hat." John Chillingworth, of QE2London, added: "We have [...]
