Tax cut for Alaska cruises

While talk in the UK has been about tax increases in the coalition government's emergency budget, there's one place in the world where taxes are being reduced - for cruise passengers at least. Legislation to reduce the levy on visitors to Alaska has now become law, although it will be some time before the number of ships visiting the region can return to previous levels. Lines such as Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean sent ships elsewhere in reaction to the $46-a-head tax, and itineraries are already set for 2011. Loss of business as a result of the withdrawal is [...]

Images from the Baltic

With apologies for the fact that it's taken a week, here's a handful of pictures from my recent cruise to the Baltic capitals on board P&O's Azura. The ship is berthed at Tallinn, Estonia in the shot above, which also gives an indication of the sort of weather we were lucky to have - apart from one day in St Petersburg when the rain lashed down. You can see how grey it was from the picture of cruiser Aurora (below), which in 1917 fired the first shot in the October Revolution. The warship is now a floating museum on the [...]

Top cruise deals to Iceland

Anyone affected by the flight disruption brought about by the Icelandic volcano might want to see at close hand what caused all the problems earlier this year. And naturally enough, the best way to travel to see Eyjfjallajökull is by cruise ship. Fred Olsen has two cruises on board the 804-passenger Black Watch sailing to the region in August and September. A 15-night Greenland and Iceland cruise sails from Southampton on August, 7. visiting Qaqortoq, Narsarsuaq and Nanortalik (all in Greenland), and Isafjordur and Reykjavik in Iceland. The ship returns to Southampton on August 22. Fares start at £1,094 per [...]

Mermaid keeps them guessing

Even though the the Little Mermaid's holiday in China has been widely reported, there were still lots of disappointed faces in Copenhagen yesterday among hundreds of people turning up at her rock on the sea shore. There were four cruise ships in port; P&O's Azura was joined by MSC Orchestra, Costa Atlantica, and Iberotour's Grand Mistral. That's an awful lot of passengers in town when, because the Danish nation was celebrating Constitution Day, the local populace was picnicking in the parks and almost all the shops were shut. The Little Mermaid would have been the big attraction - if she [...]

Been there, seen that . . . briefly

There are three million exhibits in St Petersburg's Hermitage Museum and it is impossible to hope to see more than a fraction of them in any visit, let alone a two-and-a-half hour gallop through a few of the galleries. But we achieved an impressive tally during our morning excursion from Azura, aided by a Russian guide who bore a passing resemblance to Fanny Cradock in appearance and temperament. It was all done at break-neck speed, and after taking our fill of Titians and Tintorettos, Raphaels and Michaelangelos, it was onwards and upwards to the modern collection, where Cezanne and Gauguin [...]

Sailing in . . . to be near Rod

Passengers on board up-market cruise ship Azamara Journey got a perfect view of the O2 dome as they sailed up the Thames to Greenwich yesterday. And last night Edie Bornstein, the cruise line's vice president of sales and marketing, had the best seats in the house to see her hero Rod Stewart perform on stage. The 30,000-ton vessel, carrying 694 passengers, and one of the biggest vessels to negotiate the Thames barrier, has made Greenwich pier its home for two nights. Azamara Journey is mid-way through a 14-night Western Europe cruise which left Barcelona on May 23, and is heading [...]

Together in Estonian dreams

Was it the sun, was it too much of the local Saku lager; or was it the fact that I haven't had a cigarette for two days? Whatever the reason, I thought I was hallucinating this morning. Walking towards me, through the cobbled streets of Tallinn, were Elton John and Hot Chocolate's Erroll Brown. The Rocket Man and You Sexy Thing, together in Estonian dreams? It took me a moment to realise that they were in fact John Ellis and Kennie Simon, lookalikes whose tribute acts have been packing the Manhattan cabaret lounge on Azura this week. Along with thousands [...]

The whole of history in one island

Such is John Julius Norwich's love for Sicily that he was prepared to hobble to a lunch hosted by the island's tourist board yesterday with his foot in a cast. Only hours after a hospital check-up on an injured ankle, he stood in front of a small gathering in the Italian Cultural Institution in London's Belgrave Square to tell us why he thinks Sicily is so special. It turns out that an international crisis involving Iraq in 1961 (some things never change) forced him to delay his annual leave from the Foreign Office until October, and in order to be [...]

Follow me to the Baltic

Wednesday morning sees me packing my suitcases again and taking the short drive to Southampton to board P&O's Azura for a two-week cruise to the Baltic. Six countries and seven ports of call in 14 days, visiting some of the most amazing cities in northern Europe. First port of call is Kristansand in southern Norway (not to be confused with Kristiansund, which I visited two weeks ago on Saga Pearl II). I'm hoping I'll be up early enough a couple of days later to enjoy the breathtaking sail-in through the Stockholm archipelago, and the following day we'll be in Tallinn, [...]

Saga Pearl II on Norwegian TV

Saga Pearl II was the first cruise ship of the summer to arrive in Stavanger last week, and prompted a visit from a local TV crew. And who else should presenter Siri Handeland choose to ask about the vessel and about cruising in Norway than Captain Greybeard himself Her report on the ship is included in these two clips (together with a sections on the local jazz festival and a film review). If your Norwegian is as poor as mine, fast forward to about 5:20 in the first clip, and 2:20 in the second for my contributions.
