Norwegian Jade to quit UK

No sooner have I blogged about the growing numbers of Brits joining cruises which sail from UK ports than NCL announce that they will be taking one of their ships away from Southampton next year. Norwegian Jade will be sailing from the UK this summer, and I will be on board at the beginning of June for a cruise round Britain." But in 2010, the ship will be offering seven-night cruises from Barcelona, and the Norwegian Gem will be re-located from Barcelona to Venice. Ex-UK cruises to the Baltic on board Norwegian Jewel will continue to sail from Dover. Norwegian [...]

Eurodam: I have found Paradise

It has been a week since I returned from my Caribbean cruise on Eurodam, plenty of time to reflect on what the ship had to offer. So what's the verdict? I had not sailed with Holland America before, but I can report that they are now my second favourite cruise line. Although Eurodam is HAL's biggest ship, it is a manageable size, on a par with Cunard's Queen Victoria, and P&O's Arcadia. As I wrote during the voyage, the ship handles its 2,100 passengers admirably, and there was never a moment when it felt over-crowded. There's a wraparound Promenade deck [...]

Aurora is going nowhere fast

More on the problems afflicting P&O's Aurora, now forced to make an extended stay in Auckland, New Zealand, for emergency repairs. The ship, on a 93-night world voyage which left the UK on January 11, has cancelled planned visits to the Pacific islands of Tahiti and Moorea. Passengers have already missed out on calls to Wellington and Napier in New Zealand, because problems with the ship's propulsion system had reduced her speed. P&O say that "maintenance work on a thrust bearing is being carried out by a team of technical experts." The work is expected to continue at least throughout [...]

Eurodam: Adventure under the sea

There are snorkeling and SCUBA-diving tours at most Caribbean ports of call, and plenty of marine life to view. In St Thomas yesterday, we went one better, and explored beneath the waves in a submarine. Reef sharks, stingrays and countless colourful fish swam bay as we travelled 90 metres down to the sea bed off Buck Island, a 20-minute boat ride from the island's capital, Charlotte Amalie. It was like visiting an aquarium, only 10 times better, because we were travelling through a living coral reef, never knowing what would appear next in the porthole viewing windows. Atlantis submarines operate [...]

Eurodam: A taste of the East

Dinner last night was in the Eurodam's Tamarind restaurant, and an excellent evening it was. For a modest premium of $15 a head, we ate a delicious Asian fusion meal, served by attentive waitresses. The restaurant is at the top of the ship, on Deck 11, next door to the Silk Den bar, another haven of tranquility, overlooking the Lido pool area. Soup was described as Jewels of the Sea, a fragrant lemongrass and sesame broth containing prawn-filled won ton. That was followed by a satay sampler, of lamb, pork, beef, chicken, and prawn, and then a spicy and sweet [...]

Eurodam: Where is everybody?

There are more than 2,100 passengers aboard Holland America's Eurodam for this week-long Caribbean cruise. Plus another 900 or more members of crew. Yet the ship never feels the slightest bit crowded. There were sunbeds to spare yesterday as we spent a day at sea en route to Grand Turk. Mrs Greybeard and I don't have a fixed seating assignment for dinner, but so far we have had no problems getting a table when we turn up at the Rembrandt restaurant. It's been easy to find a seat in any of the 11 bars, and there's always a waiter ready [...]

Eurodam: Ready for departure

Here we are on the Eurodam, after a painless flight from Heathrow to Miami, and a much-needed night’s sleep at the Hollywood Beach Marriott in Fort Lauderdale. The Eurodam is one of a host of cruise ships in Port Everglades today. I can see the Emerald Princess and the Ruby Princess, MSC Orchestra, the noisy Carnival Freedom blasting reggae music across the harbour, and Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas. I haven’t got my Berlitz guide to cruise ships with me, so perhaps someone could work out how many passengers that is embarking here today. The sun is beating down [...]

Injured passengers airlifted to Miami

Sixteen cruise passengers on a shore excursion on the Caribbean island of Dominica were taken to hospital when their tour vehicle crashed yesterday. Fourteen of the most seriously injured have been airlifted to hospital in Miami after treatment at the island’s Princess Margaret hospital. Six are listed in "critical" condition, two are "serious," and six are "fair". The passengers, from the Celebrity Summit, were taking part in a Caribbean Cooking Adventure shore excursion, in which they joined local experts to learn how to prepare traditional dishes. The three-and-a-half hour trip was scheduled to conclude with a scenic drive back to [...]

Take a cruise to the Moon

The middle of the ocean is a great place for star-gazing, although when amateur astronomer and popular P&O cruise director Leon de St Croix organises a session on deck, it’s often a guarantee of a cloudy night. NASA astronaut Walter Cunningham should expect some clear nights, however, when he joins Fred Olsen’s Black Watch for a 13-night cruise from Dover to the Canary Islands in April. Cunningham was the lunar module pilot on board Apollo 7, the first manned spacecraft in the Apollo missions. He spent 11 days in space in October 1968. Together with marine historian Dr Robert Cartwright, [...]

G’Day cobber – 17 times over

In early January a fleet of cruise ships set out on their annual round-the-world voyages. Some went west and through the Panama Canal to the Pacific. Others went south and rounded the Cape of Good Hope before entering the Indian Ocean, and the rest sailed through the Mediterranean and through the Suez Canal. Within the next couple of weeks, 17 of them will arrive at the magnificent Sydney Harbour. P&O’s Oriana was the first to tie up yesterday, and Amadea, run by German line Phoenix Reisen, sailed into port today. They will be followed by Cunard’s Queen Victoria, Tahitian Princess, [...]
