First look inside Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway is this week's newest cruise ship - it will be bringing a slice of the Big Apple to Britain on Monday before heading to its home base in New York for a naming ceremony on May 8. Handed over to Norwegian Cruise Line yesterday by builders Meyer-Werft, the ship arrived in Rotterdam this morning. I'll be boarding on Sunday for the overnight crossing to Southampton. The £520 million vessel, which carries 4,000 passengers, has giant images of some of New York's iconic landmarks painted on the hull in a design created by pop artist Peter Max. Among its [...]

Behind the doors marked ‘Crew Only’

All over a cruise ship, there are doors marked "Crew Only." For passengers, they mark forbidden territory. Unless allowed to use a crew stairway during muster drill, we must not cross the threshold into the other world - even if invited by a crew member. Perhaps ESPECIALLY not if invited by a crew member. But yesterday afternoon, as one of a select group of 11 Queen Elizabeth passengers who paid $120 each for the privilege, I spent three hours behind those doors, on a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour. Not before we each signed a fearsome-looking waiver absolving Cunard of any responsibility [...]

Video tour of Quantum of the Seas

Are you intrigued by the introduction of sky-diving and dodgem cars on a cruise ship? Do you wonder how the North Star thrill ride is going to transport passengers 300 feet above the waves? Want to know what the three-deck-high Two70° entertainment room will have to offer? Then wonder no more. This video tour will explain everything. Apologies for the annoying noise throughout. That's Kristin Chenoweth, who has been chosen as the godmother for Quantum of the Seas. She gets a helping hand from IndyCar driver Hélio Castroneves, basketball great Chris Webber, illusionists Penn and Teller, and even Shrek. Royal [...]

Flood of bookings for Oasis

The European debut of Oasis of the Seas is almost 18 months away, but it is generating an unprecedented demand for bookings, according Royal Caribbean's UK office. Thousands of people have pre-registered their interest in order to be at the front of the queue for the official opening of bookings to the general public tomorrow (Thursday). Members of the line's Crown and Anchor loyalty club could make bookings from yesterday and Royal Caribbean's reservations team has been working overtime. Part time workers have been drafted in to work full time and people from other departments across the business are answering [...]

The splendour of Europa2

Europa 2 promises to be among the grandest cruise ships in the world. The ship, whose 516 passengers will have unprecedented acres of space in which to luxuriate, will be making a brief visit to Southampton next month before joining slightly smaller sister vessel Europa, which consistently scores top marks in the Berlitz Guide - cruising's "Bible." Here's a sneak peek at what Europa 2 has to offer, courtesy of The Luxury Cruise Company.

Azamara is creating a bigger splash with its first AzAmazing evenings

If you found the University Boat Race a bit boring last weekend - it only really gets exciting when a protester swims into the river or one of the crews sinks - then I have discovered an exciting alternative. Water jousting. It sounds crazy, but it's highly entertaining, and should be introduced to the River Thames without delay. Frantic oarsmen work up a sweat driving their boats at each other, as combatants stand on a platform at the rear of each vessel trying to push their opponents into the drink. It's like something out of TV's Gladiators or Total Wipeout, [...]

Sea trials for two cruise newcomers

As Royal Princess enters the second day of her sea trials in the Adriatic Sea, Norwegian Breakaway (above) has returned to Bremerhaven from her trials in the North Sea. Breakaway spent much of this week sailing off the coasts of Norway and Denmark, testing her manoeuvrability and speed. Under the control of a captain from builders Meyer-Werft, the ship carried out a crash-stop test to discover how quickly it could be brought from full speed ahead to a full stop. It was also put through a Williamson Turn - the manoeuvre used to bring it back to a fixed point [...]

UK first for record-breaker Oasis of the Seas will be return visit to Solent

Oasis of the Seas' first arrival in Southampton, announced today, is a welcome fillip for the UK cruise industry and will bring millions of tourist pounds into the local economy. The average cruise ship visit is estimated to be worth £2.5 million and with up to 6,300 passengers on board Oasis is 40 per cent bigger than any cruise ship ever to berth in a British port. But is it really the world's biggest, as Royal Caribbean claimed today? When sister ship Allure of the Seas was launched in 2010, Captain Hernan Zini proudly claimed that exact measurements showed his [...]

A Regal wetting for new Princess

This was part of my day yesterday, the ceremonial float-out of Regal Princess at Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard in north-east Italy, with Cruise Critic editor-on-chief Carolyn Spencer Brown as madrina, or godmother. It is a mere seven months since the first blocks for the ship's construction were laid in the dry dock, and there's another year of work to be completed before the ship is ready to take on her first paying passengers. As a Champagne bottle smashed against one end of the hull, the sluices were opened to allow water to reach the other. It will be tomorrow (Thursday) before [...]

What is the secret of the seven horns below Royal Princess’s funnel?

It's been an amazing two days. Since leaving MSC Preziosa and Genoa behind I have been staying in Venice, at the city's finest hotel; I have witnessed the ceremonial float-out of Princess's newest cruise ship, and I have been taken on a tour of the ship to be launched in June. Phew! The Gritti Palace, which has played host to stars from Greta Garbo to Brangelina and recently re-opened after a £40 million refit, was amazing. Not just for the €11.50 (small) tin of Pringles from the mini-bar, but the sheer luxury of its new fittings and surroundings - not [...]
