Costa cruise ship to be scrapped?

Cruise ship Costa Allegra, which suffered an engine room fire earlier this year and had to be towed to the Seychelles, has been sold for scrap according to reports in Italy. Costa had originally been hoping to find a buyer who would keep the 820-passenger vessel in operation, but now say they do not know what its future will be if negotiations with a Turkish shipowner are successful. Allegra was originally built in 1969 as a container ship but was converted to passenger use and entered service with Costa in 1992. Its decks are named after Impressionist painters, and the [...]

Under new management: Change of cruise style for cut-price Discovery

EXCLUSIVE: Cruise ship Discovery is the subject of a new joint venture announced today between All Leisure Holidays and Cruise & Maritime Voyages. The popular 700-passenger vessel is scheduled to return from an extensive dry-dock refurbishment next February, and had been expected to join sister ship Voyager - launching in December - in an expanded Voyages of Discovery fleet. Instead, it will sail alongside Marco Polo, replacing venerable Ocean Countess for most of CMV's departures from regional ports in the UK. While operating on similar-sized ships the cruise experience offered by the two companies has, until now, been markedly different. [...]

Next Princess ship will be Regal

Princess Cruises have raided the thesaurus and their back catalogue to come up with a name for their next cruise ship. With Royal Princess recently floated out at a shipyard in Italy, construction work has now begun on her sister, to be called Regal Princess. The company and shipyard officials started the countdown to the ship's launch today as the first building block was lowered into position in the dry dock (above). "Just as Royal Princess was named after one of our iconic early vessels, Regal Princess also takes a name from our past that we think is well suited [...]

From crazy golf to Mozart, some of the extra treats on a Sapphire cruise

THIS FEATURE WAS PUBLISHED IN THE SUNDAY MIRROR'S HOMES & HOLIDAYS SUPPLEMENT ON AUGUST 26 It's not often you get the opportunity to inspect the works of great artists like Rembrandt, Rubens and Leonardo da Vinci without having to elbow aside all the other tourists. So an after-hour's visit to revel in the treasures of St Petersburg's Hermitage Museum was a delightful extra treat while our cruise ship was in town. While we admired the masterpieces we were serenaded by the State Symphony Orchestra of St Petersburg playing an hour of familiar favourites, including the Overture from Mozart's Marriage of [...]

Tears of joy as a Princess baby returns to greet newest cruise ship

Romance, emotion and tears of joy came to a bustling shipyard yesterday when cruise ship Royal Princess was floated out of her building dock for the first time. In keeping with tradition, a madrina - or godmother - was on hand to smash a bottle of champagne, but Victoria Nash was no ordinary godmother. In 1996, at the age of 18-months, she herself was christened on board the original Royal Princess, where her father, Nick, was serving as captain. Instead of a font, the ship's bell was used as a christening bowl, and that same bell will now be carried [...]

First pictures of Celebrity Reflection

Look in the Mirror and what do you see? A Reflection, of course. Here is cruise ship Celebrity Reflection emerging from a construction shed in Germany earlier today. The 126,000-ton vessel is the fifth and last of the Solstice Class ships built by the Meyer-Werft yard in Papenburg for Celebrity Cruises. Not quite a mirror image of its sisters, Reflection has an extra deck, so its twin funnels and signal mast could not be fitted until after it had been floated out from dry dock to the fitting-out pier alongside. Work will continue over the next few weeks on fitting [...]

New tune for cruise ship Melody

MSC Cruises have sold their oldest ship, MSC Melody, which has for some time looked out of place among the more modern vessels in the fleet. Melody has been bought by a South Korean company which plans to establish a regular service between Shanghai and the island of Jeju. Originally called Atlantic, the ship was built in 1982; at 36,500 tons and carrying 1,076 passengers in 532 cabins it is a far cry from the rest of MSC's newer and bigger ships such as the 3,500-passenger Divina, launched in Marseille earlier this year. The MSC website lists Mediterranean cruises on [...]

Germany’s dream ship avoids nightmare over change of flag

Cruise ship MS Deutschland is a national institution. Much loved by traditionalists in its home country, the 480-passenger vessel is familiar to millions as the setting for long-running German TV soap Traum Schiff - a derivative of America's Love Boat. Over the next two weeks the 14-year-old ship is berthed in London, providing accommodation for members of the German Olympic Committee and visitors to the Champions Club. At the end of the Games, it will take athletes back home, on a short voyage from the Thames to Hamburg. German president Joachim Gauck was a visitor to the ship on Saturday, [...]

Cruise ships going for Olympic gold

Normal service is slightly interrupted this week while I take a look at what Saga Sapphire has to offer during a cruise in the Baltic. I boarded in Kalundborg, Denmark on Saturday. The original schedule would have given us a day at sea on Sunday prior to arrival in Stockholm today. But Captain Philip Rentell - almost as prolific a blogger as me - took account of the weather forecast and delivered us to Warnemunde in Germany instead, where our guide not only showed us the sights but also gave us a glimpse of some of the dark secrets of [...]
