175 years of P&O heritage

For the thousands of passengers marking P&O's Grand Event this week, and the hundreds of thousands taking cruises on the line's ships throughout the year, the story of the company's 175-year history will make a great souvenir. Its 192 pages are packed with more than 300 fascinating pictures of life on board ships from the earliest - William Fawcett (above) - to today's fleet. Long-time favourite Canberra, which introduced many to cruising for the first time, delivered countless families to a new life in Australia, and came home rust-streaked from the Falklands War (below), also features prominently. And it is [...]

Saga and Voyages count the cost of their cruise ship dry-dock refits

It's an expensive business keeping cruise ships up to date. Just ask Saga, who ran over budget on the refits to their newest ship Saga Sapphire (above) and its predecessor Saga Pearl II, which has since become Quest for Adventure. And ask Voyages of Discovery, who are currently in the final stages of planning the conversion of Voyager while simultaneously calculating what they can afford to do to improve mv Discovery. Sapphire was originally built in 1982 as Europa for the German cruise line Hapag-Lloyd and was given a £27 million refit in 2009 while it was being operated by [...]

Seeing double in the fjords

No, you're not actually seeing double - the picture shows Cunard sister ships Queen Victoria (left) and Queen Elizabeth together in the Norwegian fjords at the tiny port of Flåm, at the head of Norway's Aurlandsfjord. It's another occasion when a small shot at the top of this column would be inadequate, so click on the picture to see a bigger version. The 450 inhabitants of Flåm are used to being outnumbered by visiting cruise passengers, but although they welcome up to 500,000 a year from more than 150 ship visits they don't often get as many as the 4,200 [...]

What’s so good about Breeze?

After a sensible period for quiet reflection, it's safe to pick through some of the highlights - and a few lowlights - of last week's cruise on the brand new Carnival Breeze. Passengers who sailed the full round-trip will be disembarking in Barcelona today. I jumped ship at the weekend and flew home from Venice, although not, I hasten to add, because I could take no more of the lively party atmosphere. With Breeze's calmer decor and Fun Ship 2 innovations, not to mention the unblemished weather in the Mediterranean, I was having a great week. What was so good [...]

Video previews of 2 new cruise ships

Two new cruise ships under construction; two new videos to whet customers' appetiters and no doubt stimulate advance bookings. First up (above) is Celebrity Reflection, the fifth and final vessel in the successful and sophisticated Solstice class, but with an extra deck of cabins, including some super-swish suites that feature ocean-view showers. The ship is nearing completion under cover in Germany, and should be leaving the shipyard in October. Watch carefully as the video shows sister ship Celebrity Silhouette's Lawn Club Grill and you'll even catch a glimpse of yours truly at the barbecue. No sign of me in the [...]

Artist’s view of Jubilee tribute

This is one of those occasions when the picture capabilities of this blog are inadequate. So click on the image above to get a better view of the three Cunard ships about to leave Southampton beneath a spectacular firework display at the end of their Diamond Jubilee tribute to The Queen. It's the work of maritime artist Robert G Lloyd, whose works hang on all three vessels, and it's probably the best view of the fireworks, which owe a little to artistic licence because on the night they were largely obscured by clouds. Prints of the painting will be on [...]

New cruise ship Carnival Breeze is loud, brash, and a breath of fresh air

There's a breath of fresh air blowing through the Mediterranean, and it's called the Carnival Breeze, The newest fun ship, taking me from Barcelona to Venice on only its second-ever voyage, is packed with innovative features which will soon be introduced to the rest of Carnival's 24-strong fleet. OK, it's loud, it's brash, and it's very American, but that is apparently a popular choice for a growing number of British cruise passengers, especially those with young and growing families. Sadly for us, Breeze will leave the Med at the end of this summer to cross the Atlantic and set up [...]

Cruise2Lose: Weight for it

Those of you who followed my exploits last weekend in the AquaSpa and fitness centre on board Celebrity Silhouette may be pleased to learn that I am keeping up the good work this week on Carnival Breeze. The gym is not quite as extensive, and my first attempt to do some serious work in there was frustrated because it was crowded with passengers hoping to win $500-worth of treatments in the Cloud 9 spa. But I have been back, and have followed the programme set out for me by personal trainer Chris Arnott. The pounds continue to fall off, slowly, [...]

Invasion of the towel animals

As I said farewell to Celebrity Silhouette this morning in Civitavecchia, the ship was being joined in port by Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas, Norwegian Spirit, and Croisières de France's Horizon - itself the former Celebrity Horizon, and at one time Island Star. Had I been there a day earlier I would have seen Carnival's newest flagship Carnival Breeze, whose housekeeping staff laid on a surprise for the passengers on its inaugural voyage. Anyone venturing to the pool deck early in the morning to stake their claim for a sun lounger (against the rules and all known laws of [...]

After Jubilee celebrations, when can Cunard say: Welcome aboard ma’am

A hugely successful day for Cunard, as their three ships were brought together in Southampton for the first time to honour the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, ended on a disappointing note when rain and low cloud prevented a flying display by the Red Arrows and all but obscured a firework send-off. Almost 7,000 passengers setting out on board Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, and crowds gathered in Mayflower Park, on Town Quay and elsewhere on shore could see only glimpses of the thousands of pounds-worth of pyrotechnics as rockets shot into the sky and exploded out of sight. [...]
