Cunard’s Jubilee tribute in pictures

There were hundreds of photographers, amateur and professional, taking pictures to record the historic arrival of Cunard's three Queens in Southampton this morning. Some, like me, were afloat on Southampton Water. A lucky few were aloft in helicopters. There were hundreds in the flotilla of small craft escorting the giants into port. And there were thousands more on land. Here's a selection of Cunard's official images of the event, beginning with Steve Dunlop's beautiful shot of Queen Elizabeth (top) with the Red Ensign of the Blue Funnel vessel Ashleigh R, which was in the welcoming party. I know how long [...]

Majestic sight as Cunard’s three Queens line up to mark the Jubilee

CLICK TO ENLARGE As final preparations were being made for the Diamond Jubilee service of thanksgiving in St Paul's Cathedral and the Queen's return to Buckingham Palace by stately procession, three rather different queens were making their own way in procession into port. The three ships of the Cunard fleet arrived in Southampton soon after dawn this morning and lined up to pay their own special tribute to the monarch. The Queen herself had named Queen Mary 2 in 2004 and Queen Elizabeth in 2010; sister ship Queen Victoria was christened by the Duchess of Cornwall in 2007. Dozens of [...]

How does this cruise deal add up?

I will never understand high finance. Norwegian Cruise Line has announced it is buying cruise ship Norwegian Sky, a vessel it has been operating for many years. NCL is 50 per cent owned by Star Cruises which is itself a subsidiary of holding company Genting Hong Kong. Norwegian Sky is owned by a company called Ample Avenue which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of, wait for it, Genting Hong Kong. NCL has been operating the 2,002-passenger ship under a bareboat charter, which means that while renting the vessel, they provide the crew, provisions and fuel. Under the new deal they are [...]

Take a look at the lovely Divina

There was limited time on board MSC Divina on Saturday to explore every nook and cranny of the 140,000-ton ship, which has 114 more cabins than sister ship Fantasia, and can carry 3,502 passengers compared with her predecessor's 3,274. I cannot, I'm afraid, report on the lavish Sophia Loren suite in the MSC Yacht Club, which the diva herself designed. She has also recommended a selection of 20 books which will be available to Yacht Club passengers - from Dickens' Oliver Twist, through Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea and Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago, to Dante's Divine Comedy and Tolstoy's [...]

Luxury way to explore the UK coast

Luxury expedition vessel Silver Explorer is on a ground-breaking cruise around the UK, yesterday becoming the first cruise ship to visit Lyme Regis. I'm off to see her in Dartmouth today and I'm hoping to meet Canadian cruise blogger Aaron Saunders, who embarked in Portsmouth on Saturday and will be on board until the ship reaches Greenock on May 30. Judging by his first reports, he is already enjoying himself immensely on the 6,000-ton ship which was recently known as Prince Albert II. Carrying just 132 passengers, and with a crew of 111, Explorer takes its guests off the beaten [...]

Northern sights: By kayak to the Arctic in the light of the midnight sun

Even if the England football team scored 10 goals in Oslo next Saturday, their smiles could not be any broader than the one on my face after my trip to Norway this week. Who would have thought I would be afloat in the sea, 217 miles inside the Arctic Circle, in something as small and flimsy as a kayak? But that's what I found myself in shortly after arriving in Tromsø. The first sighting of eagles came that very evening, as I paddled past a nest in a tree just yards from the shore of Kvaløya - the Whale Island. [...]

New cruise ships breeze into action

Carnival's newest cruise ship is on course for her maiden voyage on June 3 after breezing through its sea trials - as it should have given that its name is . . . Carnival Breeze. But unusually, the ship won't be officially named for several months. The 3,690-passenger vessel is a sister to last year's newcomer, Carnival Magic, and the 2009 introduction, Carnival Dream, whose launch I attended in New York. In the final stages of construction at a shipyard in north-east Italy, Breeze was put through her paces in the Adriatic, with technicians testing the ship's navigational, technical and [...]

Breakaway on the starting block

The first of 73 giant construction blocks which will eventually make up Norwegian's new cruise ship, Breakaway, was laid in the bottom of a dry dock in a German shipyard at the weekend. Remarkably, it will take less than 12 months for construction of the 144,000-ton ship to be completed - a new record for a vessel of this size. Procedures at the Meyer-Werft yard in Papenburg have been streamlined to improve efficiency, with the introduction of high-tech systems learned from the Porsche car factory. Some of the ship sections have been under construction for months, beginning in the giant [...]

Ready at last, Sapphire is a little gem, glowing with fun and surprises

It's taken six months, and - thanks to some unexpected delays - a little bit longer. It's cost £25 million. And from what I saw yesterday, the creation of Saga Sapphire has been worth every minute and every penny. The vivid blue of her newly-decorated funnel shone out across a grey day in Southampton as passengers arrived at the City Terminal and when they stepped aboard into the deck 7 reception area they were greeted by a spectacular 22-ft high sculpture consisting of a shoal of 1,395 fish. Design duo Scabetti have created a similar work for Rick Stein's fish [...]
