Fantasy is finally a reality

The wait is finally over Disney's newest cruise ship, the Disney Fantasy, sets out on her maiden voyage today, a full month after she was named in New York by singer Mariah Carey. First, though, the crew were treated to a day out at Walt Disney World, Orlando, as a thank you for their hard work over the past few weeks. Many of them, from more than 60 countries around the world, had sailed across the Atlantic as the ship was delivered from the German shipyard where it was built. It may be several weeks or even months before their [...]

Power cuts hit QM2 world voyage

Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2 is making stop-start progress on her current world cruise - the 150,000-ton liner has been plagued by a succession of brief power blackouts. The latest left the vessel without propulsion as it was en route to Japan. The ship was also affected by power outages during its crossing of the Indian Ocean to Australia last month. Passengers have reported being stuck briefly in lifts until power was switched back on. although back-up generators restored lighting and other services after a short break. More alarmingly, the most recent incident appears to have affected propulsion of the [...]

Voyager in the Bahamas? Not yet

That was confusing for a moment. My trusty friends at Google informed me that the ship Alexander von Humboldt had arrived, to a warm welcome, at its new home in Grand Bahama. The only vessel I was aware of with that name was, I thought, at anchor near Istanbul. It is awaiting a multi-million pound refit later this year, from which it will emerge under the new name of Voyager (pictured below), and will join Discovery sailing under the flag of niche cruise line Voyages of Discovery. The last I heard was that the dry-dock work would be carried out [...]

Royal buffet goes over the Horizon

Double the number of seats, a dedicated Pastry Chef section, and "action stations" where chefs will give cookery displays - the buffet restaurant on the new Royal Princess cruise ship is going to be a big attraction. More details of the restaurants on the 3,600-passenger vessel have just been revealed, and Rai Caluori, executive vice-president in charge of fleet operations, shows off some of them in the video above.. Horizon Court will accommodate 900 passengers indoors, with seating for another 350 on the open deck outside. The larger space will not only offer more seating but more tables for two [...]

Costa considers its scrap options

Fire-damaged cruise ship Costa Allegra, which was towed to the Seychelles after an engine-room fire, will be scrapped. The 20-year-old ship, one of the oldest and smallest in the Costa fleet, was already up for sale at the time of the incident, and the line's management has decided it is too expensive to repair. The 927-passenger Costa Voyager has been pulled out of its Red Sea itineraries to replace Allegra for its forthcoming European itineraries in the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, six bids are being considered for the removal of Costa Concordia from rocks of the Italian island of Giglio, where [...]

Majesty joins Thomson cruise fleet

Rumours of a new-build ship to join the Thomson fleet remain wishful thinking, but the line will confirm today that it has acquired a replacement for the ageing Thomson Destiny.  Thomson Majesty will take over in May, operating the Adriatic Explorer, Pearls of Aegean, Colourful Coasts, and Canarian Flavours itineraries. The ship, which entered service in 1992 with a maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, was christened Royal Majesty by singer Liza Minelli. More recently it has operated as Louis Majesty. The 1,462-passenger vessel has five restaurants including a la carte offerings at Le Bistro, 5-course waiter service dinners [...]

Watch Disney Fantasy leave New York

Naming ceremony over, Disney Fantasy has left New York for her new home at Port Canaveral. My friend Scott captured the video (above) as the ship pulled away from Manhattan piers, playing a selection of tunes on the ship's whistle. Those of a nervous dispostion be warned: there's a snatch of the "Small World" theme which will be an earworm for the rest of the day. If you have half an hour to spare, the compilation video (below) shows the ship arriving in the Hudson, a selection of still photographs, and a lengthier version of the deparrure. Both videos will [...]

Minerva starts her new life

Minerva is back. With not a moment to spare, the Swan Hellenic cruise ship returned to Portsmouth today after a multi-million pound refit, ready to embark on a quasi-maiden voyage to the Canary Islands. Refit hardly seems an adequate word to describe the work that has been undertaken over the past few months in Bremerhaven, Germany - I detailed it here recently. Captain John Moulds (above) has spent the winter in sub-zero temperatures overseeing the work instead of sailing the ship in warmer waters. I asked him what were the best new features on the ship. "After being in command [...]

Mariah Carey names Disney Fantasy

Singer Mariah Carey may have been godmother, and uttered the time-honoured words "May God bless this ship and all who sail on it," but it was her husband Nick Cannon, helped by Minnie Mouse, who got to smash a Champagne bottle against the side of Disney Fantasy. The cruise ship was christened yesterday in Manhattan and Carey led an audience of VIP guests in the countdown in its three-deck atrium as a six-foot tall bottle erupted in a shower of confetti. On stage in the ship's theatre she had earlier sung "I'm a Native New Yorker," and told the audience [...]

P&O prepares Rose Bowl check-in for Grand Event cruise passengers

It's going to be mighty crowded in Southampton harbour on July 3 when all seven of P&O's cruise ships will be in port to celebrate the company's 175th anniversary. The problem of where each of the ships will berth has already been decided, but there's still the small matter of the passengers to sort out - and that adds up to almost 15,000 leaving in the morning, and another 15,000 arriving from before midday to start their holidays. There are four permanent cruise terminals at the docks, and another warehouse which is occasionally pressed into service. That still leaves the [...]
