Disney’s Dream is no Fantasy

I thought I was dreaming when I heard the familiar strains of "When You Wish Upon A Star" blasting across the harbour in Charlotte Amalie, on the island of St Thomas last week. Then I realised it was the sound of the whistle on the Disney Magic cruise ship (above), leaving its berth at Havensight. There are currently two classically-proportioned twin-funnelled Disney cruise ships, the Magic and the Wonder, each carrying 1,750 passengers - and a host of Disney's favourite characters. They will soon be joined by two more, which will be 50 per cent bigger, and carrying 2,500 passengers [...]

Epic name, impressive ship?

My dictionary gives one definition of the word "epic" as meaning "of heroic or impressive proportions." Whether that applies to Norwegian Epic, the giant of a cruise ship now being built in France for Norwegian Cruise Lines, I'll leave for you to decide. Anyway, here she is, in all her glory. I can't help feeling they naval architects have gone over the top on this one. She promises to be different inside as well. Here's an artist's impression of one of the luxury cabins, complete with wavy walls. The 150,000-ton Epic will carry 4,200 passengers and NCL claims the new [...]

Eurodam: Ready for departure

Here we are on the Eurodam, after a painless flight from Heathrow to Miami, and a much-needed night’s sleep at the Hollywood Beach Marriott in Fort Lauderdale. The Eurodam is one of a host of cruise ships in Port Everglades today. I can see the Emerald Princess and the Ruby Princess, MSC Orchestra, the noisy Carnival Freedom blasting reggae music across the harbour, and Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas. I haven’t got my Berlitz guide to cruise ships with me, so perhaps someone could work out how many passengers that is embarking here today. The sun is beating down [...]

Sydney’s welcome for Arcadia

There's a beautiful gallery of pictures of P&O's Arcadia in Sydney Harbour on the P&O website. After a hectic day of comings and goings, with some passengers disembarking, others boarding, the £10 Poms lunch, and visits from local dignitaries, Press and travel agents, Arcadia is now en route to Brisbane.

A new Mediterranean Adventure

Yet another option for European cruise passengers opens up next year, with the announcement that Royal Caribbean will be basing Adventure of the Seas in Malaga for five months from June 2010. The 138,000-ton ship, which carries 3,100 passengers, has been sailing week-long Caribbean voyages from San Juan, Puerto Rico since it was launched in 2001. When it arrives in Malaga – a convenient flight away from the UK, it will offer seven night cruises to Sardinia, Rome, Corsica and Majorca, and a choice of five-night voyages to Tenerife and Funchal, or to Corsica and Villefranche. Adventure will join seven [...]

It doesn’t have to Costa fortune

The Costa cruise line were not thinking of the credit crunch when, a couple of years ago, they named a new ship Costa Fortuna – it might sound silly to our ears, but not to the Italians. In fact it can actually be ridiculously cheap. I have found a spectacular bargain for families looking to take a half-term break How about seven nights sailing from Florida to the Mexican Riviera, taking in Key West, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel? Yours for just £299 per adult, and £89 per child, sharing an inside cabin, departing Fort Lauderdale on February 15. OK, flights [...]

Celebrity sisters make a splash

Celebrity Solstice set new standards for luxury and cruise ship design when she was launched last year, and has been impressing passengers on her first voyages from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean. A further four ships are planned along the same lines. Work is well under way on the construction of Celebrity Equinox, which will be named at a ceremony in Southampton in July before heading for the Mediterranean and then on to Florida. The third, Celebrity Eclipse, started taking shape at the same shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, this weekend, when the first of 72 hull sections was lifted by [...]

Bouncing around on Balmoral

I woke up this morning to radio reports of freak weather and winds of up to 120 mph battering France, and my thoughts immediately turned to Fred Olsen’s Balmoral, which I reported earlier this week had been bouncing around in the Bay of Biscay. It looks like there has been no respite for the passengers who have been suffering at the hands of the elements. I spent two days in winds of up to storm force 10 in the Bay, on board Olsen’s Black Watch a few years ago, so I know what they have been going through. Standing in [...]

Safe Passage to India

P&O’s Arcadia was taking no chances when she sailed through the Gulf of Aden this week en route to India. The area has been plagued by Somali pirates, who only last week released a massive oil tanker which had been held hostage since before Christmas. If you want to be safe, there’s nothing better than getting the Royal Navy on your side, and Arcadia was escorted by Type 23 frigate HMS Portland (above), which is armed with Sea Wolf missiles, a 110 mm gun, two 30 mm guns, and four torpedo launchers. The RN even sent a Lynx helicopter over [...]
