Carnival’s Magic is no illusion

The ship's name is Magic and the main attraction in its 1,350-seat Showtime Theatre is Las Vegas illusionist Jason Byrne. Fitting, then, that there was plenty of magic around for the naming ceremony of Carnival's newest cruise ship yesterday in Venice. Borrowing an illusion from the "Destination: Unknown" show, Carnival president Gerry Cahill arrived on stage in a red helicopter, and Byrne produced a rose for godmother Lindsey Wilkerson before conjuring up the bottle of Champagne which would be smashed to name the vessel. Wilkerson is a young cancer survivor who was treated at the pioneering St Jude Children's Research [...]

Marvellous! A moving moment as Cunard Commodore Bernie bows out

Perhaps Cunard wanted to keep the retirement of Commodore Bernie Warner a family affair. Perhaps the man himself didn't want a big fuss. And perhaps I was a bit unkind to suggest the cruise line had let their most senior captain slip away too quietly last week at the end of Queen Mary 2's world voyage. Because a video now posted on Peter Shanks's We Are Cunard blog pays a fitting tribute to the man, and reveals what an emotional morning it was for Warner, his wife Tina, and all those on the bridge for his farewell after 46 years [...]

Arab turmoil gives Spirit time off for dry dock and a fresh coat of paint

When Spirit of Adventure docks in Civitavecchia on Friday morning, 350 passengers will troop off to board coaches for Rome airport to fly home, or perhaps to spend a few more days' holiday in the Eternal City. For once, there will not be a procession of coaches bringing a new shipload eager to start a new cruise. The scheduled 14-night Relics of Rome cruise has been cancelled. It would have taken passengers on excursions to the magnificent amphitheatres of Leptis Magna in Libya and El Djem in Tunisia, plus the ports of Annaba and Bejaia in Algeria before spending a [...]

Captain’s Epistle to the Corinthians keeps Spirit on the straight and narrow

After an exciting but very windy Easter Monday in Mykonos, Spirit of Adventure is heading out of Greek waters; next port of call - Messina in Sicily. There are two ways to get there: around the Pelopponese peninsula, which juts out from the Greek mainland like an outstretched hand, or through the Corinth Canal, a masterpiece of engineering which cuts through from the Aegean to the Gulf of Corinth and the Ionian Sea. Being Adventurous we chose the latter and passengers were treated to a Champagne breakfast to compensate for their early start soon after sunrise. According to Captain David [...]

Investigation into cruise ship death

George Richardson, whose wife Janet died four weeks after being dropped into the North Sea while being transferred from a cruise ship to a rescue vessel, is waiting for the results of a post mortem before deciding whether to take legal action. Mrs Richardson, 73, spent several minutes in near-freezing water before being pulled to safety. She was rushed to a Norwegian hospital on Bodo, and later transferred to the Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle, nearer her home in Ousby, Penrith. The decision to evacuate her from the Ocean Countess, during a cruise to see the Northern Lights, was made after [...]

A quiet night in Mykonos? No fear

Overnight stays in port are the next big thing for cruise ships, if Carnival UK's David Dingle and Azamara's Larry Pimentel are to be believed. They have both spoken of the advantages of "slow cruising" - more time ashore for passengers, and opportunities for the companies to save fuel and money. Captain David Warden-Owen certainly made the most of Spirit of Adventure's relaxing stay in the Peloponese port of Nafplio and commented next morning how pleasant it had been to enjoy an undisturbed night's sleep without the constant throb of the ship's engines. We'll be having another night alongside tonight, [...]

My big fat Greek adventure

Although I am fortunate enough to be able to spend a significant amount of time at sea, so much of that is visiting new ships, or making my first cruise on a vessel, it is rare that I get the chance to return to one I have sailed on before. But this is my third cruise on Spirit of Adventure, which became one of my favourites when I first sailed round the Black Sea on her in 2007. Following that expedition to Romania, Bulgaria and the fascinating ports of the Crimea, I spent another two exciting weeks on board in [...]

Is this our ferry in Havana?

Prepare for some updates from my cruise on board Spirit of Adventure in the Greek islands. I have been on board almost a week since joining the ship in Istanbul last Friday, and some account of what we have been up to is overdue. But first, let me relate an astonishing series of coincidences. As regular readers will know, just a few weeks ago I was in Cuba on board Saga Pearl II - the ship which next year will be re-named Quest for Adventure and will replace Spirit in this sub-brand of Saga Cruises. On Wednesday, Spirit was berthed [...]

Cunard names Kiwi Commodore

Captain Christopher Rynd has been appointed Commodore of the Cunard fleet - Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria - taking over the title held by Commodore Bernard Warner until his retirement on April 19.. After an uncharacteristic two-day silence, Cunard President and Managing Director Peter Shanks said today: "I must put on record our appreciation for the marvellous contribution that Bernie made to Cunard Line. We wish him and his family all the best for his retirement." Commodore Rynd joined Cunard in 2005 when he took command of Queen Elizabeth 2 and since then he has been master [...]

Eight out of 10 surveys talk rubbish

Opinion polls and surveys - don't you just love them? Anyone with a new product, service or website to promote does so with pseudo-scientific research which has little merit other than to draw attention to their particular sphere of activity. Take the recently-launched UK website which compares cruise fares and helps potential passengers get the best deal. Is it necessarily good for them to establish that people on cruises knock back more alcohol than when they are on land-based holidays? No matter, it's a talking point, so we get detailed statistics about the number of passengers (44 per cent) consuming [...]
