Farewell . . . without fanfare

Cunard rarely makes a move these days without fanfares of trumpets, big announcements and lengthy press releases - such as the one I received a few days ago about the introduction of 3D movies and songwriting workshops on flagship Queen Mary 2. It seems remiss of them to allow long-serving Commodore Bernard Warner - master of the QM2 and their most senior captain - to slip quietly into retirement. But that's what happened today. Apart from a brief mention on Facebook, it appears there will be no official statement. The most I have been able to glean is that Commodore [...]

748 rescued from blazing cruise ship

On my recent visit to the Netherlands Antilles island of Curacao, I saw cruise ship Ocean Star Pacific anchored off-shore and discovered the vessel - best known to UK cruise passengers as Carousel when it sailed for Airtours - was in the final stages of a refit ready to start a new life cruising the Mexican Riviera. It re-entered service only a few days ago, but its new career has been brought to a sudden halt by a fire which led to the evacuation of all 748 on board. The Associated Press reports 522 passengers and 226 crew members aboard [...]

A new Adventure for Quest

I'm enjoying an Easter cruise through the Greek islands. We were in Mytilene, the capital of Lesbos, yesterday; today it's Kos, and tomorrow is Rhodes. Still to come, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini. The weather could be better - it's been cool and windy and there were showers this morning - but so far it has been a relaxing break. The only concern is the future of the ship I am sailing on; the plucky Spirit of Adventure is to be taken out of service in just over a year's time. Operators Saga, abandoning the unequal struggle to keep the Adventure brand [...]

It’s Magic – the beards take notice of what John Heald says was needed

When Carnival's biggest-ever cruise ship, Carnival Dream, was launched in New York in November 2009, its inaugural voyage was rocky in more ways than one. Seas were so rough that at one stage a departure from the Manhattan pier was in doubt, and when we did hit the Atlantic, it became apparent that there were some basic design flaws with some of the ship's amenities. The Lido restaurant in particular came in for criticism - not for the food, but for the inconvenient traffic flow of passengers and its inadequate capacity. It was all very well having a variety of [...]

New start for Southampton cruises

Britain's busiest cruise port, Southampton, will see almost a million and a half passengers passing through the city this year. There will be 360 ship turn-rounds, each bringing about £1.5 million into the local economy. So it's high time there was an internet resource to help the visitors, whether embarking or disembarking. Now there is. CruiseSouthampton.com opened for business this week, and it is packed with information and advice - from hotel and restaurant listings to suggestions for places to visit and details of local travel and transport. There are maps and guides in abundance, and users can log on [...]

Watch Grand Princess refit

An army of workers is ripping apart the interiors of Grand Princess, popular among British cruise passengers, as part of a multi-million pound refurbishment of the 13-year-old ship. Fans familiar with the vessel after her frequent visits to the UK - it sails from Southampton during the summer - can watch the progress of the refit on a daily video diary hosted by British cruise director Martyn Moss. There is also a growing collection of pictures on Princess's Flickr album. One of the most dramatic moments will be the removal of the ship's signature Skywalker nightclub - the distinctive handle [...]

Godmother Shirley is getting ready for her cruise ship close-up

Dame Shirley Bassey is getting excited about her new role as a godmother to P&O cruise ship Adonia. The 74-year-old singer will be breaking a £37 bottle of pink fizz - from the Hush Heath Estate in Kent - across the bow of the ship at the christening ceremony in Southampton on May 21. Not sure whether she has any plans to sail on her new baby, however. As she says in this video: "When the ship comes to Monte Carlo I shall be on my balcony and I will see her come in. I will jump in my car, [...]

There’s no such thing as a free drink and they are going to cost even more

After yesterday's post about free lunches, we now turn to free drinks. Or not, as the case may be, because unlimited alcohol is proving a problem for one cruise line. Only last month, Royal Caribbean announced with some fanfare a range of drinks packages to be provided on board three of their ships, most notably Independence of the Seas which sails from Southampton. Not free, admittedly, and in some people's eyes not particularly cheap - $29 per person per day (onboard prices are in US dollars, remember) for all beers and house wine by the glass; $39 for the Classic [...]

Queue here for a free lunch

Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch? New website silvertraveladvisor.com - which does exactly what it says on the tin, that is dispense travel advice to the over-50s - has teamed up with Holland America Line to offer a series of visits to cruise ships this summer. The events, in Dover, consist of a tour of one of the line's ships, followed by lunch on board - all at no cost. They'll even provide free car parking. The ships are: MS Eurodam on May 22, June 3, July 9 and August 12; MS Ryndam on May 21, [...]
