Allure just keeps on growing

Size really does matter, you know, especially in maritime matters. When Royal Caribbean showed off the almost-complete Allure of the Seas back in August, Captain Hernan Zini surprised a press conference by stating confidently that his new ship rightly held the undisputed title of "biggest cruise ship in the world" because it was 5 mm - about a fifth of an inch - longer than sister ship Oasis of the Seas. That's not much more than the thickness of a few coats of paint, or the head of a rivet, and it makes you wonder how accurately it is possible [...]

An everyday story of cruise folk

Some of the cast of The Archers will be escaping from Ambridge next year, and cruising to the Mediterranean with Fred Olsen. They will be reviving a tradition of Archers-themed cruises, and as well as mingling with other passengers at the Captain's cocktail party they will take part in a special performance of the long-running radio show - complete with agricultural sound-effects. Names of the cast members taking part have not yet been confirmed, but the characters Eddie Grundy, Kathy Perks, Linda Snell and Mike Tucker have sailed on previous cruises. The first Archers cruise of 2011 will be a [...]

Will Disney ship be finished in time?

The weekend's visit to Papenburg, Germany, for the float-out of Disney Dream has been fascinating and frustrating in equal measure. It was exciting to be among the crowd of 10,000 who stood in the rain to witness Saturday's event, and thrilling to be one of the first people on board for an extensive tour today - I was one of only two British journalists invited - but the hectic schedule and an almost non-existent internet connection at our hotel left me unable to file proper updates. I can't bring you any new pictures - Disney allowed only their official photographer [...]

Dream on – Disney’s nearly ready

Today is going to be exciting. After watching Disney Dream being floated out from the shipyard on Saturday evening, and spending Sunday morning with Bruce Vaughn, the man who led the team which designed most of it, I will finally get the chance to go on board and have a look around. The cruise ship is the biggest ever built in Germany, and at 128,000 tons and with a capacity of 4,000 passengers, dwarfs Magic and Wonder, the two ships which make up the current Disney fleet. It will be the first ship at sea with a water-coaster, the 765-ft [...]

Under and out for two new ships

What a day it has been for new cruise ships. The biggest in the world squeezed under a giant suspension bridge in Denmark, while the biggest ship ever built in Germany emerged from a huge construction shed into the open air for the first time. Allure of the Seas (above) is on its way from Finland to Florida, but first had to negotiate the Great Belt Bridge - with inches to spare. As my picture shows, Capt Hernan Zini guided it through safely. A few hundred miles south, thousands gathered in the rain to watch Disney Dream inch slowly out [...]

Dream is starting to come true

Thomson Dream's first season of cruises in the Med came to an end this week as the ship arrived in Harwich, and then sailed for a multi-million dry-dock and refit in Hamburg. The 1,500-passenger vessel, largest in Thomson's fleet, had a stormy ride earlier this year with passengers complaining about faulty air conditioning and problems with bathrooms following its transfer from Costa Cruises. But recent passenger questionnaires have shown 100 per cent scores of "good" or "excellent" for service and 99 per cent for food, entertainment and cabins. Managing director David Selby said: "We accept that there were challenges following [...]

Tight squeeze ahead for Allure

This will be the sight tomorrow when giant cruise ship Allure of the Seas scrapes under the Great Belt Bridge on her way from Finland to Florida. The picture actually shows sister ship Oasis of the Seas on the same journey last year. If you believe the statistics, there is 65 metres (213 feet) clearance between the sea and the highest point of the roadway on the 18km-long bridge between the Danish islands of Zealand and Flynn. And Allure's air draft, or the height from waterline to the top of the funnel, is, er, 65 metres. Being Denmark, this could [...]

Half-price fares and free flights to join your cruise ship – deal or no deal?

It seems like only a couple of days ago I was writing that cruise lines were welcoming strong bookings and a firming up of fares, and were looking forward to record profits. Hang on, it WAS only a couple of days ago that I was grimly forecasting passengers would be faced with higher prices next year. How wrong could I be? My email inbox is rapidly filling up with cut-price deals, offers of free flights, and other incentives for us to reach for our credit cards and book a holiday at sea. Royal Caribbean's Richard Fain was decidedly upbeat and [...]

Cup ahoy! Starbucks takes to the sea

Seems it's the week for secrets to be revealed. After NCL's confirmation of their new ship order comes an announcement today that Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will be the first cruise ship to have a Starbucks coffee shop on board. It's being trumpeted as a big step forward, but in fact the cruise line has had an agreement to serve Seattle's Best Coffee - a Starbucks subsidiary - for the past 10 years. But I suppose it is appropriate, given that Starbucks has a maritime connection, being named after Captain Ahab's first mate in the novel Moby Dick. [...]

Is there anyone on the bridge?

Here's a splendid picture - the crew of Cunard's Queen Elizabeth assembled an the aft decks when the ship was sailing from Italy a week before her naming ceremony in Southampton. Everyone is there, from Captain Chris Wells, to the waiters, cabin stewards, laundrymen and engine room grease monkeys. My cut-down version hardly does it justice - you can see a bigger image at Entertainment Director Alastair Greener's blog - scroll down to the bottom of the page. I'm sure it will be a popular souvenir for passengers to take home, but I have just one question (apart from asking [...]
