Have a night out – on a ship

If the medieval merchant Marco Polo had stayed at home - whether that was in Venice or the Croatian port of Korcula which I visited on Sunday - he would never have opened trade routes between Europe and China and the world might be a different place today. The cruise ship that bears his name is, however, making a success of selling ship visits and going nowhere. A series of events on Marco Polo, planned for October 30 while it is docked at Tilbury, proved so popular that three more dates have been added for what is described as "sampler [...]

Crocked cruise ship out for a month

With cruise ship Ocean Village en route to join the P&O Australia fleet, sister ship Pacific Jewel - the former Ocean Village 2 - is going to be out of commission for four weeks. As I reported last week, Jewel limped home to Sydney after developing an engine problem, and repairs are going to take longer than first expected. A five-night Melbourne Cup Cruise - planned to coincide with Australia's biggest night of horse racing - and a 14-night voyage to Fiji due to depart on November 13 have both been cancelled, and engineers from France have flown out to [...]

Cruise line bosses welcome more passengers and predict bigger profits

It's beginning to look like the financial worst is over for cruise lines; good news for shareholders, less good for passengers looking for bargain basement fares. Two days before he'll be taking delivery of his latest billion dollar baby, Allure of the Seas, Royal Caribbean chairman Richard Fain predicted that the company will rake in record profits in 2011, helped by tighter cost controls and the increased capacity the new ship will bring. He also forecast that 2010 earnings per share will reach $2.47, compared with a July prediction of $2.35. The figure for 2011 is expected to be higher [...]

New ship order saves Turku yard

Back in action after a few days sailing in the Adriatic on board Aegean Odyssey - and more of that soon. But first, time to catch up with the cruise news from while I was away. The big announcement - although hardly unexpected - came yesterday when NCL revealed they had ordered two new ships from the Meyer-Werft yard in Germany. There was also news from the Finnish yard of STX Europe, which was facing a bleak future once Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas sails to Florida on Friday. Viking Line, which operates luxury ferries from Finland to Sweden [...]

Two new cruise ships for NCL

It's not the most revealing of computer-generated impressions, but this is allegedly what Norwegian Cruise Lines two new ships will look like. After months of rumours, the company has confirmed that it has raised the finance and placed an order for the next generation of Freestyle Cruising ships The 143,500-ton vessels, which will each carry approximately 4,000 passengers, will include lots of the features introduced on Norwegian Epic, and are scheduled to enter service in spring 2013 and spring 2014. They will be built at the Meyer-Werft shipyard in Germany, and I am looking forward to seeing owner Bernard Meyer [...]

Secrets beneath the palace

Going underground is becoming a recurring theme of my Croatian voyage aboard Aegean Odyssey. On the day's organised walking tour of Split, passengers were shown around Diocletian's Palace, a remarkable walled city built as a retirement home by the Roman emperor, and since occupied by a series of squatters who all left their mark without doing enough damage to the original to prevent it deservedly becoming a UNESCO World Heritage site. Above ground it is spectacular enough, with a mausoleum built to contain the emperor's body and then later - and ironically in view of the number of Christians Diocletian [...]

Top deals for Caribbean sun

If the first frosty mornings of winter have you shivering, then do what the cruise ships do and head for the Caribbean sunshine. P&O's Azura sails from Southampton next Friday and there's still time to get on board for the 14-night voyage which takes in St Kitts, Antigua, St Lucia, Grenada and Barbados. There's even a stop at Tenerife on the way. Fares start at £799 per person, including the return flight from Bridgetown. Go to www.pocruises.co.uk or call 0845 3555333. Need a bit more time to pack your cases? Then fly from Gatwick, Cardiff or Bournemouth on November 27 [...]

Surprising treasures old and new

My guidebook to Croatia, from the excellent Bradt series, runs to 392 pages, of which five and a half are devoted to the city of Zadar. Of the church museum, part of the Benedictine convent attached to the 16th Century St Mary's Church, it says only that it "houses a wonderful collection of reliquaries, paintings and sculpture." That one brief line serves only to disguise the wealth of treasures that greeted the unsuspecting passengers on tour from Voyages to Antiquity's Aegean Odyssey this morning. For a start, I don't think any of us expected to be welcomed by one of [...]

Underground in search of history

The skies over Venice turned from blue to black and then to vivid orange as a thunderstorm passed overhead at sunset. Spurred on by a sirocco wind and an almost full moon, high tide threatened to spill from the lagoon into Piazza San Marco, where raised duckboards were ready to provide a dry path for the visitors. So what did I choose to do? Go underground, of course, which also meant I was descending below sea level. As one of the passengers from Voyages to Antiquity's Aegean Odyssey afforded the rare privilege of visiting the basilica of St Mark after [...]

To Antiquity … and beyond!

Voyages to Antiquity, the new one-ship cruise line launched earlier this year by industry veteran (he must be starting to hate that description) Gerry Herrod, didn't get off to the most auspicious of starts. Work on updating the ship, Aegean Odyssey - which included reducing its capacity from 650 passengers to 378 - took longer than expected, and striking Greek dock workers conspired with the Icelandic ash cloud to hold up the re-launch. The first passenger reviews were less than enthusiastic; customer service was spotty, as were the aft decks, thanks to an imperfect funnel design. Recent reports have been [...]
