Sterling future for Oceania Cruises

The country club interiors, the boutique ship style, and the interesting itineraries all make Oceania Cruises an deal match for the British market - especially those travellers who know their way around. And finally, starting from the middle of next month, brochures will be available with fares in pounds sterling, instead of US dollars. The voyages in the brochure will be the winter 2011-12 season, which go on sale from September 15. European sales and marketing director Bernard Carter is clearly delighted at the new policy agreed by his American bosses. He said: "This is an incredibly big step forward [...]

Getting in the swing with V2A

As I head north to Alaska on board Diamond Princess - we arrive in Ketchikan on Monday morning - it was good to hear from two separate sources that back in Europe, a new cruise venture is finding its feet after a hesitant start earlier this year. Voyages to Antiquity, a new company formed by cruise veteran Gerry Herrod, operates just one ship, the Aegean Odyssey, and sails to a selection of classic destinations culled from the pages of (Lord) John Julius Norwich's book, The Middle Sea. The operation's launch in April was beset by problems. Dry-dock work on the [...]

On track for a memorable trip

The second day of my journey on the Rocky Mountaineer through the Canadian Rockies began by passing a pretty black and white church (above) used as a location in Clint Eastwood's 1992 film Unforgiven, and ended just after the coaches passed the Vancouver Film Studios known as Hollywood North. There were plenty of sights in between which, if they weren't so remote, would be a film-maker's dream. Hell's Gate, the narrowest part of the Fraser River, where up to 200 million gallons of water pour through a narrow canyon every minute, was a serious challenge to the men building the [...]

Sun or shops? Choose your cruise

Two very different cruises, each sailing from the UK on the same day, top the cruise deals on offer this week. Pack the sun-cream, shorts and swimsuits for the 11-night Winter Sunshine cruise on board Royal Caribbean's mega-liner, Independence of the Seas. Sailing from Southampton on November 29, the ship calls at Vigo, Lisbon, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Madeira and la Coruna. Inside cabins from £649, balcony cabins £889. Go to www.iglucruise.com or call 020 8544 6447. Alternatively, prepare for some serious shopping on a Christmas Markets cruise aboard Fred Olsen's Balmoral which, with a capacity of 1,300 passengers, is a [...]

All aboard the Rocky Mountaineer

All aboard! Today our happy band of Princess Cruise passengers, on a land tour in the Canadian Rockies, left behind the motor coach that brought us from Calgary, and boarded the Rocky Mountaineer train in Jasper. We said farewell to driver Dale, and hello to train attendant Tim who kept us entertained - and fed - throughout the day. There were about 500 passengers on the train in 17 carriages; six of them with the domed observation cars providing GoldLeaf service. I'm up front, in coach number 1, enjoying RedLeaf service at half the price. We still get breakfast and [...]

Rockies are a moving experience

There's a world of difference between a cruise - which I will be embarking on board Diamond Princess on Saturday - and a land tour, which is what I am doing right now in the Canadian Rockies. On the ship, I will be taken from port to port without the slightest hassle on my part; I'll leave Ketchikan one day and I'll wake up in Juneau the next, for example. On land, getting from Calgary to Banff, and from Banff to Jasper, involves a coach ride, and different hotels, and packing, and labels, and bellmen to deliver and collect the [...]

Getting down with Eddie the Eagle

Now I know how Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards must have felt when he took part in the 1988 Winter Olympics. I stood at the top of the 90 metre ski jump at the Calgary Olympic Park today and stared down . . . and down . . . and down. I wasn't wearing skis, and the hill and the landing area are now overgrown with grass. But it was still scary up there in the early morning chill. Imagine the butterflies that must have been raging in Eddie's stomach when he took it upon himself to challenge the world's best, [...]

Follow me: North to Alaska

There may be a short break in transmission over the next couple of days, as I'll be on my way to Alaska tomorrow. Well, to Canada first, for a land tour in the Rockies, before joining the Diamond Princess in Vancouver next Saturday for a seven-night cruise north to Whittier. After becoming used to a ship taking me seamlessly from one destination to another, I'm not sure how I'm going to handle travelling by coach and train between Calgary, Banff and Jasper, but friends tell me that the Rocky Mountaineer train is a truly spectacular experience. Once on the Diamond [...]

Cruising among the tall ships

There's an opportunity to sail among tall ships, and another to cruise on a tall ship in this week's best cruise deals. Saga Ruby sails from Dover on August 24 on a seven-night voyage which combines a two-day stopover in Leith - from where passengers can visit the Edinburgh Military Tattoo - with an overnight stay in Bremerhaven, Germany. As the ship leaves to return to Dover, it will be surrounded by billowing sails as competitors in the Tall Ships Race also leave the port. The £1,279 fare includes travel to and from Dover for anyone living within 75 miles, [...]

Olympic cruise ship plan under fire

More news on that proposal to spend an astonishing £6.6 million on leasing a cruise ship to provide accommodation for police at the 2012 Olympic Games sailing events. And someone is talking sense for once. Dorset County Councillor Tim Munro is demanding that the money be spent on creating a lasting legacy for the region. Describing the plans to moor a private cruise ship in Portland Harbour as "disgusting," he said: "If the figures are right and £6.6million is spent on housing police, then why on earth is it not invested somewhere in Weymouth and Portland? A cruise ship will [...]
