Updates on exceptional value-for-money cruise deals and last-minute offers

Cruises are the winning formula

With three drivers still in realistic contention for the title, tomorrow's final Grand Prix of the season in Abu Dhabi will be a nail-biting affair. Next year's race on November 13 could be just as exciting, and wouldn't it be fun to combine a day at the track with a cruise holiday? MSC Cruises start a season of voyages in the Gulf from October 30, 2011, and will be flying passengers on Etihad Air from London, Manchester and possibly Dublin direct to Abu Dhabi. The cruises will be on MSC Lirica, a medium-sized 60,000-ton vessel carrying 1,560 passengers. Cruise-only fares [...]

Top deals for Disney Cruises

How many wishes will come true with the launch of the newest Disney Cruise ship? The 4,000-passenger Disney Dream, to be named in Florida in January, was floated out of a giant construction shed this week. It will take a generous sprinkling of pixie dust just to get it the 25 miles down the River Ems from Papenburg to the North Sea next week. The 128,000 ship - largest ever built in Germany - is half as big again as Disney's two existing ships, the Magic and the Wonder. A fourth vessel, the Fantasy, is already being built, and will [...]

Dream is starting to come true

Thomson Dream's first season of cruises in the Med came to an end this week as the ship arrived in Harwich, and then sailed for a multi-million dry-dock and refit in Hamburg. The 1,500-passenger vessel, largest in Thomson's fleet, had a stormy ride earlier this year with passengers complaining about faulty air conditioning and problems with bathrooms following its transfer from Costa Cruises. But recent passenger questionnaires have shown 100 per cent scores of "good" or "excellent" for service and 99 per cent for food, entertainment and cabins. Managing director David Selby said: "We accept that there were challenges following [...]

Half-price fares and free flights to join your cruise ship – deal or no deal?

It seems like only a couple of days ago I was writing that cruise lines were welcoming strong bookings and a firming up of fares, and were looking forward to record profits. Hang on, it WAS only a couple of days ago that I was grimly forecasting passengers would be faced with higher prices next year. How wrong could I be? My email inbox is rapidly filling up with cut-price deals, offers of free flights, and other incentives for us to reach for our credit cards and book a holiday at sea. Royal Caribbean's Richard Fain was decidedly upbeat and [...]

Queen Elizabeth: The maiden season

Passengers on the maiden voyage of Cunard's new £365 million Queen Victoria will be stepping ashore in Cadiz, south-west Spain this morning. That's if they are not still unpacking - one couple who stayed at a 4-star hotel in Hampshire en route to the ship needed two taxis for the 45-minute journey to the ship - one just for their luggage. Some may be heading off to explore Seville; others will be sampling sherry in Jerez; while there will be a few who, having paid anything from £1,489 to £15,799 for the privilege of being the first to sail on [...]

Lessons to be learned at sea

It's not too late to grab a bargain cruise for half term, though you might have to pinch a day or two of school time at the beginning or end to make the most of these last-minute bargains. Tell the head teacher it's educational to travel to New England in the fall, or to be one of the first passengers on board Cunard's brand new Queen Elizabeth. Learn how leaves change colour in the autumn on a nine-night cruise to Canada and New England on board Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas. Fly to Boston, then it's on to Portland, [...]

Top deals for Christmas cruises

It's my idea of heaven - Christmas at sea, with no need to worry about cooking, washing up . . . or annoying relatives. Just sit back to be entertained, fed and plied with drink at any time of day or night, and even enjoy a few hours of unseasonal sunshine by the pool. And there are options for those who want to spend the time surrounded by their children, or those who prefer to get away from the little darlings altogether. P&O has vacancies on several of its ships for this year's Christmas cruises. Arcadia offers the child-free option, [...]
