Celebrate Baked Alaska Day

The Baked Alaska Parade is one of the much-derided rituals of holidays aboard cruise ships. Modernists may hate it, but traditionalists love the moment when waiters march through the restaurant carrying their desserts aloft, often with the lights dimmed and sparklers ablaze. I was secretly delighted during my Red Sea cruise on Thomson Celebration last week when the parade was a fitting conclusion to the Gala Dinner. Especially when, as one of the guests at the Captain's table, I was serenaded by a group of singing restaurant staff. Imagine my surprise today to discover that February 1 is Baked Alaska [...]

Carnival’s Magic return to the Med

Carnival cruise director John Heald was pretty excited yesterday - not because he is about to return to work on the Carnival Dream after his Christmas and New Year break at home in Essex, but because he was able to reveal ahead of today's official announcement that the line's newest ship will be sailing the Mediterranean in 2011. The company's withdrawal from Europe was a hot topic when CEO Gerry Cahill faced the Press at the launch of Dream in New York last November. Now, on his blog, Heald has leaked the news that Carnival Magic will be based in [...]

The Damon Identity – on a cruise ship or watching ice hockey?

This could be the best publicity stunt ever for a cruise ship - the media down under is agog with reports that Matt Damon is celebrating New Year sailing on board The World. The ship will be in Sydney Harbour today for the spectacular firework display. Earlier in the week, Damon is reported to have been dolphin watching in Jervis Bay. On Tuesday he went ashore with his daughter in Batemans Bay where he not only signed autographs for staff and customers at the local fish shop, but also endorsed their speciality, vodka dipping sauce. "He came in and we [...]

Cruise ship publicity: fuelling the flames or smoke and mirrors?

Royal Caribbean must have been delighted that their coup in getting Mail on Sunday travel editor Frank Barrett on board Oasis of the Seas a week before the rest of the British media resulted in three lavish pages in the paper's travel section. The cruise line has been cranking up the publicity machine for the biggest cruise ship in the world and has been rewarded with the headline "S.S. Stupendous." Barrett, not known as a huge fan of cruise holidays, appears to have finally woken up to the facts that many of us realised some time ago - that cruises [...]

Am I ready to walk the plank?

Anyone who has read John Heald's Carnival blog will know he has a great sense of humour - and a British sense of humour at that - so I am pleased he has taken my gentle chiding in the spirit it was intended. I had a go at him earlier this week because he had fired a shot across the bows of Oasis of the Seas - which had been delayed by rough weather in the Atlantic - without accepting that two of his own company's ships had also had their itineraries messed about by a bit of wind. As [...]

Not such a great triumph, John

I hate to say it, but cruise director and cruise blogger extraordinaire John Heald has shot himself in the foot with his latest daily report. As a loyal employee of Carnival Cruises, he never misses an opportunity to take a swipe at their biggest rivals, Royal Caribbean. Today he has a go at Oasis of the Seas, which was delayed by storms while crossing the Atlantic, and will be two days late arriving in Fort Lauderdale. "There are lots of ships making the transition from Europe to North America at the moment and all without incident despite some typical Atlantic [...]

Cruise is a winner for Kara

Kara Tointon has celebrated leaving EastEnders, where she played Dawn Swann, by taking a cruise on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas - not with her boyfriend, former co-star Joe Swash, but with her mother. She seems to have been modestly successful in the ship's casino, enjoyed having dinner with the captain, and discovered one of the greatest joys of cruising - a different view each morning. Writing about her holiday on the Virgin Holidays Cruises celebrity blog, she says: "Awake early and we open our curtains to Bermuda. I think that's what excites me most about cruises... waking up [...]

Green with envy on his honeymoon cruise?

It was strange enough to see Tiger Woods being stalked by a golf fan in a green body suit last weekend. Now it looks like the outfits are spreading to cruise ships. Super-blogger John Heald, who is keeping the passengers entertained on board Carnival Freedom in the Caribbean, found this guy in the audience when he walked on stage the other day. As if the outfit wasn't bizarre enough, it turns out the passenger was on his honeymoon. It's no wonder Carnival brand themselves as "the Fun Ships." Elsewhere in the cruise blogosphere, I was quite taken by one man's [...]

Let down by a cruise ship lift

I have been attuned to all things Celebrity Cruises since spending a fascinating day on board their beautiful new ship Celebrity Equinox at the weekend. So when another reference to Celebrity popped up in one of my regular internet searches, I was drawn to it immediately. I soon began to wish I hadn't bothered. It was an announcement from a Finnish firm to say they had won a contract to supply lifts for two more of Celebrity's Solstice-class ships. Not lifts, of course, but elevators. And, in the words of the press release from KONE Corporation, the company will supply [...]

Oprah's giant 55th birthday party started with everyone staying for three days at the Poble Espanyol resort, a reconstruction of a Spanish village with shops, bars and restaurants. The cost is estimated [...]
