The Top 10 family cruises

My colleague GILL WILLIAMS has compiled a Top 10 of the best family cruise deals available. Take a look: Free kids clubs and the ability to pay up front for meals make cruising a winning holiday solution for families all at sea in the credit crunch. And by shopping around you might even bag a free cruise for the children this year. That's because shipping lines are anxious to pipe aboard a new generation of sailors, believing that once bitten with the cruise bug you're forever smitten. Most lines don't charge for tots under two and several are offering free [...]

Cruise to put a smile on your face

Need a good laugh? Then take a holiday. A survey of British families has discovered that a week away in the sun generates almost as much laughter as we normally get at home in two months. Apparently we laugh an average of 14 times a day in our normal surroundings - although I swear I heard more than that today as my son received a succession of sick Michael Jackson emails. On holiday we generate 100 belly-busting laughs a day, probably as a result of dads wearing Speedos, and mums trying to pretend that last year's bikini still fits. Not [...]

First meeting of the three Queens

In January last year I stood on the terrace of the Ritz-Carlton hotel at the southern tip of Manhattan to watch a historic meeting of Cunard's three Queens - the veteran Queen Elizabeth 2, the magnificent Queen Mary 2, and their new sister, Queen Victoria. QM2 put on an extra-special display, performing a 360-degree pirouette right in front of us (above). It wasn't quite such a historic event as billed, because a repeat meeting took place a few months later in Southampton. It could never happen again now, because the QE2 has since sailed off to retirement in Dubai. But [...]

OV prepares for final season’s cruising

Casual cruise line Ocean Village may be about to disappear at the end of 2010, but it's not going to go quietly. Although one of the line's two ships will be transferred to new ownership in Australia later this year, the original Ocean Village will continue to provide "cruises for people who don't do cruises" for another year. A TV advertising campaign featuring the voice of Sarah Parish (right), star of BBC series Mistresses, launches next week to push the ship's winter season in the Caribbean, with fares starting at £599 a week for two-week cruises from Barbados. And next [...]

Did the ship move for you, darling?

German cruise line TUI showed a distinct lack of imagination when they took over the Celebrity Galaxy and re-named it Mein Schiff, which is German for, er, My Ship. They have got their act together now though, and put together an interesting money-back offer. Any bride who gets pregnant on her honeymoon cruise will qualify for the deal. With a completely straight face, the company's spokesman says they will require medical evidence to establish that conception took place on board before paying out. I can't, somehow, see passengers booking a honeymoon cruise on the off-chance they'll come back expecting a [...]
