Azamara goes all-in-cruise-ive

Boutique line Azamara Club Cruises is to offer all-inclusive drinks, matching the packages available on upmarket competitors such as SeaDream and Crystal. The line will also introduce a complimentary shore excursion - or AzAmazing Evening - on each of its voyages. The new benefits will begin when the line's ships return to Europe next year - March in the case of Azamara Quest, and May for Azamara Journey. All Azamara's cruises feature late-night departures and overnight stays in port. It will be during these that the "destination events" will be laid on. Typical evenings will include outings to the ballet [...]

Take the family on a cruise and save enough money to buy a car

While P&O's sponsorship of Downton Abbey places the brand in front of a TV audience of millions each week, I fear the tactic will do little to change the widely-held - but totally inaccurate - perception of cruising as an expensive holiday. In fact, cruise ship holidays provide some of the best value around, and it's taken Thomson to prove it with a comparison of three different multi-centre breaks. A family of four on a Mediterranean tour from Palma, Majorca to Corsica, Rome, Florence, Toulon and Barcelona would spend an estimated £11,269 on flights, hotels, meals, drinks and entertainment. The [...]

Go local: the easy way to cruise

Fed up with the queues at airport security and the money-grabbing tricks of budget airlines? It has never been easier to sail away on a cruise and it's gaining in popularity all the time. Last year more British passengers than ever began their holiday from a UK port - up 100,000 to 753,000. More ports are getting in on the act as well. Southampton is the busiest cruise centre by far but, fearful of the competition, it has been fighting against the re-development of a Liverpool terminal, and it faces competition from Dover, Tilbury, Harwich and others. Ships leave Britain [...]

How to grab the best cruise deal

Cruise fares have never been so low. The economic situation, the Costa Concordia effect and even the Olympics have all driven prices down this summer. With their all-inclusive meals, a variety of entertainment on tap, holidays at sea have been good value for years. Now they are unbeatable. But how do you ensure you get the best deal? Book early, or wait for a last-minute bargain? It all depends, and the market is changing fast. Graham Dullop, director of Cruise Club International, told Travel Weekly recently:: "Previously, people would queue up to register for the following year's brochure when it [...]

Cheers! The drinks are on Fred

When it comes to deals to help sell cruises there are two popular ways to avoid cutting fares to the bone - a price promise that means early bookers will always get the best value, and all-inclusive drinks. Fred Olsen is now embracing both in a concerted attempt to get customers to book early . Only last month, the cruise line announced it was going to trial the drinks deal on a handful of itineraries aboard Braemar next February and March. They did such good business as a result, with those cruises selling three times as quickly as others in [...]

Fare deal guarantee is launched in bid to attract early cruise bookers

Cunard and P&O Cruises have moved to try to break the habits of customers who are accustomed to picking up bargain fares with late deals. Under its new Price Promise, passengers are guaranteed they won't lose out if fares are reduced. The new Vantage Fares, launching next Monday, July 23, will include the choice of a range of benefits such as free car parking at the port or airport, or return coach transfers to Southampton. Vantage Fare passengers can choose a specific cabin and will have the flexibility to make changes to their booking up to 90 days before departure, [...]

Ventura gets single cabins, but misses out on Olly’s wine bar

P&O cruise ship Ventura is to have 18 single cabins added during a refit next March. The new accommodation will be identical to the extra rooms for solo passengers on sister ship Azura, alongside the main Exchange Bar, and reducing the amount of space for the casino. The cabins are revealed in the deckplans in the 2013 brochure, published for the first time this week. Accommodation for singles, with no supplement to the fare, will be available on three of the fleet's seven ships - Oriana also had some added during last year's refit - and they are promised on [...]

Slow it down with Cunard

With fuel costs spiralling out of control, cruise lines are being forced to take steps to cut down on consumption in order to reduce costs. And anyone who has limped away from a petrol station with an overloaded credit card after filling up the family car will feel nothing but sympathy for the accountants who have to foot the bill for a tanker top-up that is counted in thousands of tons rather than a few dozen litres. Ships are taking longer to reach their destinations and spending longer in port in order to economise. It's become a fact of life [...]

Princess bookings off to a Royal start

Record bookings for the debut of Royal Princess have set Princess Cruises up for a bumper 2013, when it will have an unprecedented seven ships in Europe and another seven in Alaska. The 3,600-passenger Royal Princess, currently under construction in Italy, will set off from Southampton on her seven-day maiden voyage to Spain on June 16 next year. UK director Paul Ludlow says the importance of UK passengers has been behind the decision to bring the ship to Britain, and is delighted with the response when sales opened on Thursday. "We've seen great bookings already from the UK on the [...]
