Death by chocolate on a cruise

Who doesn't love a mystery? Check out the books being read by passengers on their cruise ship sun loungers and a good three-quarters of them will be crime thrillers, whodunnits, and tales of girls with dragon tattoos. And there's a real-life mystery being enacted on Saga Pearl II right now as passengers try to get to the bottom of how one of them ended up with a severe black eye, and another two were put ashore to be flown home from Port Antonio, Jamaica. The real queen of crime writers was, of course, Agatha Christie, who will be the centre [...]

Haunted cabins and butter sculptures fascinate Joanne on QM2 crossing

There was a second writer who caught my eye while on board a ship this year. After David Nobbs I discovered Joanne Harris, the author of 15 books including Chocolat and Runemarks, was at sea. Not exactly on a cruise, however. She travelled on a Transatlantic crossing aboard Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2, spent a week in New York, and then sailed back to Southampton talking and Tweeting all the way. On the westbound journey she was part of a literary double act, and appeared to love her new environment from the first minute. "My stateroom has orchids, Champagne and [...]

Rough seas ahead for new Queen

When Queen Elizabeth left Southampton several hours late on Wednesday, after waiting for a special train carrying 300 passengers from snowbound Scotland and the north of England, I speculated on Twitter that if it had been just 30 people, they may have missed the boat. As it turns out, I hit the nail on the head. Captain Chris Wells told guests at his cocktail party last night for passengers travelling in Grills class that there were indeed 30 passengers who failed to make it to the Ocean Terminal on time. Their attempts to catch up with the newest Cunard ship [...]

Brit girls are rocking the boat

Perhaps they were expecting Mary Sunshine, the ace reporter from the musical Chicago. But as the character is often played on stage by a large transvestite with an operatic voice, they were going to be disappointed when I turned up. I can't sing and I don't wear dresses How was I going to razzle dazzle the stars of the feature show on board the biggest cruise ship in the world? Which though it is performed at sea, is pretty near the full Broadway production, in the 1,400-seat Amber Theatre with facilities - back stage and front of house - better [...]

£100k target for QM2 charity cruise

Friday night on BBC will see the annual charity extravaganza that is Children In Need, and more than £80,000 of the millions that will flow into Terry Wogan's coffers was raised by passengers on board Cunard's Queen Victoria when he joined a Mediterranean cruise earlier this year. And this week, Pudsey Bear joined Cunard president Peter Shanks for the announcement that Queen Mary 2 will host another charity cruise, this time a round-Britain voyage, in September 2011, with a fund-raising target of £100,000. Commodore Bernard Warner and entertainment director Paul O'Loughlin, also taking part in this video preview, are hoping [...]

Battle of the beards?

Captain Greybeard is obviously proud of his facial hair, but he can't compete with eco-warrior David Bellamy (left), who will be escorting a group of UK passengers on a week-long cruise to Costa Rica and Nicaragua in December 2011. The cruise, on the 170-passenger tall ship Star Flyer, will visit some of the world's most pristine rainforest and beautiful beaches. The week-long voyage from Puerto Caldera along the Pacific costs of Nicaragua and Costa Rica calls at the surf resort of San Juan del Sur; the half-moon bay of Playas del Coco, with spectacular wildlife; National Park Santa Rosa, famed [...]

Mighty challenge for the Captain

The excitement is mounting - one week from today I will be stepping aboard Allure of the Seas in Fort Lauderdale, ready for a three-night cruise. Last time I was on board, in the shipyard at Turku, Finland, there were workmen crawling all over the vessel and I had to wear a hard hat and protective boots. Now the ship is complete. US media, who don't want to work over the Thanksgiving holiday, will be sailing this weekend, and it is being used as the location for scenes from Adam Sandler's new movie Jack and Jill, also starring Katie Holmes [...]

Virtual crossing is a Facebook hit

For many, a Transatlantic crossing is the purest form of cruising there are no ports of call to interrupt the pleasure of being on board a ship for seven days (or more) sailing between Southampton and New York. There's all the time in the world, with nothing to do and not enough time to do it in, especially travelling westbound, when the time changes give you an extra hour on five days. In fact there's no shortage of activities to keep you occupied, even if the wind across your balcony as the ship ploughs through the grey seas of the [...]

An everyday story of cruise folk

Some of the cast of The Archers will be escaping from Ambridge next year, and cruising to the Mediterranean with Fred Olsen. They will be reviving a tradition of Archers-themed cruises, and as well as mingling with other passengers at the Captain's cocktail party they will take part in a special performance of the long-running radio show - complete with agricultural sound-effects. Names of the cast members taking part have not yet been confirmed, but the characters Eddie Grundy, Kathy Perks, Linda Snell and Mike Tucker have sailed on previous cruises. The first Archers cruise of 2011 will be a [...]

New ship order saves Turku yard

Back in action after a few days sailing in the Adriatic on board Aegean Odyssey - and more of that soon. But first, time to catch up with the cruise news from while I was away. The big announcement - although hardly unexpected - came yesterday when NCL revealed they had ordered two new ships from the Meyer-Werft yard in Germany. There was also news from the Finnish yard of STX Europe, which was facing a bleak future once Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas sails to Florida on Friday. Viking Line, which operates luxury ferries from Finland to Sweden [...]
