Flirting with the motion of the ocean

Want to know what people enjoy most about their days on board cruise ships? P&O did, so they set up a questionnaire on Facebook - and got some unexpected answers. To no-one's surprise, relaxing was the favourite activity, followed by sunbathing which I would have thought was pretty much the same thing; or does it require lots of concentration to ensure an even, all-over tan? Given that their ships are in port on more days than they are at sea, perhaps we might have expected "seeing a new place" and taking excursions to have secured more votes, unless their relatively [...]

Captain Hamish hangs up his hat

Popular P&O captain Hamish Reid retired at the weekend, after almost 40 years working on cruise ships. Capt Reid, who joined P&O as a deck cadet in 1972, spent his final cruise at the helm of Oriana, where he has been master since May. The 16-night voyage took 1,800 passengers to Venice, Dubrovnik and Spain before returning to Southampton. During his 39-year career, he has also served on board Arcadia, Aurora, Oceana, Ventura, Artemis, Canberra, Grand Princess, Crown Princess, Golden Princess, Diamond Princess, Pacific Princess, Sun Princess, Regal Princess, Ocean Village II, Ocean Village I and Queen Victoria. Having worked [...]

Sailing onto the silver screen

Cruise ships will be the co-stars of two up-coming comedy films. The trailer for Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked was premiered in America this weekend, showing the animated star's version of Leonardo di Caprio's "I'm the King of the World" moment from Titanic. Scenes were shot - with human co-star Jason Lee (of TV's My Name is Earl) - during a Caribbean cruise on board Carnival Dream. Also building up to release is Jack and Jill (below), starring Adam Sandler as twin brother and sister, parts of which were filmed on board Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas last November. [...]

And . . . we’re back with a video treat

Captain Greybeard has returned from his stint supporting brother Bill Honeywell on his marathon 4,500-mile cycle ride (it's getting longer!) around the coast of mainland UK, raising money for Cancer Research UK. It's been a fascinating week, travelling along the south coast of England from Bognor Regis in West Sussex to Hope Cove in deepest Devon, and more of that later. Coming soon, updates on what has been happening in the cruise world while I have been on the road. But first, here's a Captain Greybeard video that Mr Google found for me this morning. It's nothing to do with [...]

Plenty to see on tour with Eurodam, but Britannia still rules the waves

My 12-day cruise on Eurodam is almost over - today is the final day at sea before we dock in Dover on Wednesday morning - and I am acutely aware I have been failing in my duty to keep this blog updated. Trouble is that it's hard work having a relaxing time, and there aren't enough hours in the day. Especially when those days have provided so much interest and things to do OFF the ship as on it. Rarely have I enjoyed such fascinating excursions; some through Holland America's team, and some arranged independently. Apart from Copenhagen, which I [...]

New Kids on the Beach

Half Moon Cay is one of the most beautiful of all the private resorts used by cruise ships. The perfect crescent of beach, on a peaceful island in the Bahamas, is surrounded by a warm, clear sea. The sand is as soft as talcum powder; there are snorkels and pedaloes for hire for the energetic, and sunbeds aplenty for those who just want to lie in the sun. The sign above the beach bar proclaims "I Wish I Could Stay Here Forever" and one of the most popular attractions is horse riding through the waves. Even with a shipload of [...]

Will Opera be hitting the right note for cruise passengers this year?

It's all been about opera this week. No sooner was MSC Opera under tow after being hit by electrical failure than P&O Cruises announced that Russell "The Voice" Watson would be performing on a three-night mini cruise aboard adults-only ship Arcadia in December. The December 3 departure from Southampton went on sale today with fares starting at £299. One travel agent friend of mine was reporting by mid-morning that all inside and outside cabins had sold out. He's hoping for a similar result when another £299 3-night Arcadia break goes on sale tomorrow. This one, leaving on December 12, will [...]

Sea Me, Feel Me, Hear Me . . . Roger Daltrey gives surprise show on QM2

There was a special treat yesterday for passengers crossing the Atlantic on board Cunard's Queen Mary 2 - The Who's Roger Daltrey gave an impromptu matinee performance in the ship's Royal Court Theatre. On board to take part in a song-writing seminar led by Chris Difford, he spent half an hour talking with Entertainments Director Paul O'Loughlin about his early life and how he began his career in music before taking a few questions from the audience. As Edward Morris reports on the country music website CMT.com, he strapped on a 1963 Gibson guitar - as played by the Everly [...]

Win a cruise at the big show

With the latest figures showing that cruises have never been so popular, what better time to plan for the future than by visiting The CRUISE Show, which returns to London's Olympia on March 26 and 27? All the major cruise lines and lots of specialist operators will be there to offer inspiration, information and practical tips - and of course to persuade potential passengers to part with their money. They will even be giving cruises away: at least 20 holidays will be up for grabs in competitions exclusive to visitors to the show, and there will be countless special offers [...]

Jenny falls for the Allure of Love

The biggest cruise ship in the world, Allure of the Seas, is coming to be quite the film star. Not content with being the location for scenes from the forthcoming Adam Sandler move Jack and Jill, it is about to feature in a series of shorts including this one (above) starring Jenny McCarthy. The film, which is former Playboy model McCarthy's debut as a director, is a rom-com called The Allure of Love.
