SpongeBob SquarePants (and Dora) meet Captain BaggyPants

OK, it had been a busy morning, but Captain Greybeard should have pulled his trousers up before posing with two of Nickelodeon's biggest stars on stage aboard the cruise ship Norwegian Gem. I met SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer in New York yesterday, at the announcement of a new partnership which will take them and other popular cartoon stars to sea on the Norwegian Jewel from April, and on the soon-to-be-launched Norwegian Epic from July. As popular as SpongeBob and his pals will be - and they will be in demand for character breakfasts for which mum and dad [...]

Hairspray’s Natalie and Michael rock to the motion of the ocean

Showbiz hopeful Natalie Woods would probably be the first to admit she is not the right shape to follow her mother into a career in ballet. And until only a few weeks ago the bubbly 21-year-old was working as a children's entertainer at a holiday camp in Camber Sands in Sussex. Now she is the star of the Broadway musical Hairspray, being performed for the first time on a cruise ship, the Oasis of the Seas. After weeks of rehearsal, and frustrating delays waiting for the ship's theatre to be made ready, the show was premiered last night, and received [...]

Discover a new life at sea

There's more to cruise holidays than visiting exotic locations, soaking up the sun, watching spectacular shows in the theatre, or even bingo and trivia quizzes. You can take up a brand new hobby, or learn more about astronomy, art and antiques; even learn to dance like the contestants on Strictly. Here are a few suggestions for a life-changing experience in the New Year: Creative writing Ever dreamt of writing your memoirs, trying your hand at poetry or creating your own fictional characters? Turn yourself into a writer in 2010 with Swan Hellenic's creative writing workshop onboard The Venetian Republic cruise. [...]

Vegas legends on Epic stage

Entertainment on board the cruise ship Norwegian Epic, scheduled to debut next summer, will have a Las Vegas flavour. Elvis Presley, Madonna, Tina Turner, Cher, Tom Jones, Dolly Parton, and the Blues Brothers will be among the acts making regular appearances - in the shape of impersonators from the Legends in Concert team. Three celebrity tribute performers will take to the stage in the ship's 685-seat Epic Theater for six 45-minute shows during each seven-day cruise. Further cabaret-style shows will be performed for diners in the Manhattan Room, the Epic's New York-inspired supper club. Also taking to the sea is [...]

Musical treat in the fjords

Here's an interesting package - I'm surprised it's not been done before. Hurtigruten, who operate the fleet of Norwegian Coastal Voyages ships, have put together a special cruise combining a winter exploration of the magnificent fjord landscapes and classical music concerts. On January 4, MV Trollfjord will become a musical stage as she sails from Tromso to Oslo, with concerts on board, and culminating in a performance at Oslo's newly-built opera house. With luck, there will also be a light show, courtesy of the Aurora Borealis. Tromso is inside the Arctic Circle, and its long winter nights are perfect for [...]

Is Derren’s number up at sea?

If you hear of any strange happenings in the English Channel over the next couple of days, then don't be too surprised - illusionist extraordinaire Derren Brown is entertaining and no doubt bemusing passengers on board P&O cruise ship Aurora. Fresh from tricking a huge TV audience into believing he had predicted the National Lottery numbers, Brown will be performing two 45-minute shows in the ship's Curzon Theatre during the cruise which left Southampton today and will be calling at Zeebrugge and Le Havre. Surely that means he will have to put together two completely different shows, because the theatre [...]

Never a dull moment at sea

On board Spirit of Adventure, Blackbeard finds there's always plenty to do, and takes us to the Ready Steady Cook show he mentioned a couple of days ago Kevin Woodford, Gavin Baxter and Lesley Waters. Picture courtesy of Robert Senft I had always wondered what people do on days at sea and was slightly apprehensive that I might feel claustrophobic or start to develop signs of cabin fever. I needn't have worried. There's nothing better than sitting in the sun with a good book; Spirit of Adventure has a well-stocked library, and there are sun loungers dotted all about the [...]

Basil Brush charts a new course

Donald Duck was not the only children's favourite taking to the high seas this week. Basil Brush joined the Ocean Village cruise ship and immediately headed for the bridge to take over navigational duties. The famous fox won't actually be in command of the vessel - he will be performing live shows in the ship's Connexions bar, and posing for pictures with children and their parents during Mediterranean sailings for the rest of the summer. He'll have a chance to meet up with Bagpuss and Paddington Bear, who are also on board. I hope there are no showbiz tantrums over [...]

Green with envy on his honeymoon cruise?

It was strange enough to see Tiger Woods being stalked by a golf fan in a green body suit last weekend. Now it looks like the outfits are spreading to cruise ships. Super-blogger John Heald, who is keeping the passengers entertained on board Carnival Freedom in the Caribbean, found this guy in the audience when he walked on stage the other day. As if the outfit wasn't bizarre enough, it turns out the passenger was on his honeymoon. It's no wonder Carnival brand themselves as "the Fun Ships." Elsewhere in the cruise blogosphere, I was quite taken by one man's [...]
