Waiter! This cold soup is . . . cold

It’s good to see Carnival’s blogger extraordinaire, John Heald, back in action doing the job he does best – working as cruise director. John, from Southend-on-Sea, and the top CD for the biggest cruise line in the world, is usually given the newest ships to take out, and will be on board the 130,000-ton Carnival Dream for her maiden voyage later this year. After a couple of months rest at home in England with his expectant wife, Heidi, and organising publicity events in America he is back at sea, on board the Carnival Valor. His daily blog, always a delight [...]

Injured passengers airlifted to Miami

Sixteen cruise passengers on a shore excursion on the Caribbean island of Dominica were taken to hospital when their tour vehicle crashed yesterday. Fourteen of the most seriously injured have been airlifted to hospital in Miami after treatment at the island’s Princess Margaret hospital. Six are listed in "critical" condition, two are "serious," and six are "fair". The passengers, from the Celebrity Summit, were taking part in a Caribbean Cooking Adventure shore excursion, in which they joined local experts to learn how to prepare traditional dishes. The three-and-a-half hour trip was scheduled to conclude with a scenic drive back to [...]

Cruising to the Miss Italy title

There will be some extra glamour on board Italian cruise ship MSC Orchestra when she sails to the Caribbean on March 21. Passengers will have more than the attractions of Cozumel, Grand Cayman and the Dominican Republic to entertain them when they leave Fort Lauderdale. For the ship will be the setting for the finals of the Miss Italia USA 2009 beauty pageant. Contestants have been selected during regional events throughout the United States to reach the Orchestra contest, and the winner will travel to the Lido de Jesolo in June to compete against 49 other beauties for the title [...]

Costa cruise ship to the rescue

Graham Hughes is a man with a mission. He has set himself the task of visiting every country in the world in one year – without flying or driving anywhere. He has to use public transport on land, and because his expedition is hoping to raise £1,000,000 for charity, he can’t exactly splash out when it comes to travelling over water. Finding himself stranded in St Thomas, in the US Virgin Isles, he was delighted to be offered a lift to the Dominican Republic on board the cruise ship Costa Fortuna. He could hardly believe his luck, and wrote in [...]

Antarctic cruise safety fears

The grounding of an expedition ship in Antarctica has raised fresh fears about the safety of cruises in the region. The Ocean Nova, carrying 64 passengers and 41 crew, has been stranded on rocks near the Argentine research station at San Martin in Marguerite Bay since yesterday, and attempts to refloat the ship have been thwarted by high winds. The stranded passengers have now been transferred to Clipper Adventurer, a sister vessel also operated by Quark Expeditions, which is on its way to the port of Ushuaia in southern Argentina. A Quark spokesman said: "There is still no sign of [...]

Equinox will be arriving early

Construction work on Celebrity’s second Solstice-class ship, the Equinox, is going so well that an extra eight-day cruise has been scheduled before the ship’s maiden voyage. The ship will be sailing from Southampton to the Norwegian fjords on July 31, ahead of the voyage from Southampton to Civitavecchia, departing on August 8. A third Solstice-class ship, the Eclipse, will be based in Britain from 2010. The 2,850-passenger vessels mark a step forward in luxury and cruise ship design. The Solstice has a real grass lawn on its top deck, and offers daily exhibitions of glass-blowing. Fares for the fjords sailing [...]

Boudicca takes on the north

Cruise lines frequently boast about the convenience of sailing from UK ports, and it cannot be denied that a departure from Southampton or Dover makes life a lot easier – no airport hassles, no luggage restrictions; just drive up to the terminal and your holiday begins. That’s fine of you are within easy reach of the south coast, but it’s not so simple if you live further afield. Scots and northerners are faced with either a long drive, an inconvenient rail journey, or an interminable trek by coach. Which is why it’s good news that Fred Olsen’s Boudicca will be [...]

Cruise Costa with Ryanair

Italian cruise line Costa is Europe’s biggest and busiest, carrying 1.2 million passengers on its fleet of 12 ships in 2008. Five more ships will be sailing under the yellow Costa funnel by 2012, three of them within the next 12 months. Up until now, the line has been a small player in the UK market, but that may be about to change with the announcement today that Costa is teaming up with Ryanair. Customers using the Ryanair website will be able to book Costa cruises from 50 departure ports throughout Europe, including Barcelona, Civitavecchia (for Rome), Marseille, Palermo, Savona [...]

Why not marry on a Love Boat?

It’s Valentine’s Day, and if thoughts are turning from a sweet little card, a romantic meal and a bottle of pink fizz, towards a proposal and a diamond ring, then what better than a wedding on a cruise ship? A record number of couples are choosing to marry at sea, and it can’t simply be because it’s an easy way to combine the ceremony with the honeymoon. There were three weddings today on Arcadia, which is currently cruising off southern Australia, and there were six during my two-week Caribbean cruise on Ventura last year. In 2008 a total of 371 [...]
