Steady as she goes for NCL

The news from today's Press conference on board Norwegian Epic is that . . . well, there is no news. Putting a positive spin on the way in which NCL's fortunes have been turned around since re-structuring began in 2008, CEO Kevin Sheehan had to admit that there are no firm plans for new ships to be added to the fleet in the wake of the billion-dollar Epic. The company's former bosses had originally ordered two ships but the economic downturn a couple of years ago forced a major re-think and one of them was cancelled. Now Epic has been [...]

Hold on, Epic is coming . . . slowly

She's big, she's brash and she's burly. She's also suffering from a bit of an opening night party hangover. Norwegian Epic, the most eagerly-anticipated new cruise ship of 2010 is going to be a little bit late making her British debut. She should have arrived in Southampton by this morning, ready for a two-day preview cruise for travel agents, press and television. Instead, the 153,000-ton giant is feeling her way gently through the Channel at reduced speed due to a "technical problem" - said to be a failed propellor shaft bearing - which almost led to yesterday's departure from Rotterdam [...]

Keeping the QE2 legend alive

While the attention of the cruise world is focussed on Norwegian Epic - I'm flying to join her in Rotterdam in the morning - one group of enthusiasts is determined that the once-great liner Queen Elizabeth 2 will not be forgotten. Members of TheQE2Story.com internet forum are planning to sail to the Cunard legend's birthplace on the River Clyde next weekend, aboard the historic paddle steamer Waverley. On Saturday they will be sailing "doon the watter" past the former John Brown shipyard, and on to Tignabruaich. On Sunday they are planning to pay homage at Clydebank's Titan crane, and they [...]

Elizabeth has a bigger behind

At the risk of coming over all geeky, here's a picture which shows that Cunard's new Queen Elizabeth (above) will not be a direct copy of sister ship Queen Victoria (top left). OK, they are basically similar - longer versions of Carnival's Vista platform - but Elizabeth crams a few extra cabins in by not having a raked stern. The modification also provides extra space on the aft pool deck and is similar to the amended design of Holland America Lines' Eurodam (centre left) and the Costa Luminosa (bottom left). Cunard's web site declares Victoria's passenger capacity to be 2,000, [...]

Epic almost ready for action

Final sea-trials have been completed, hull painting is dry and shiny, entertainment - from Blue Man Group to bowling alleys - is ready for action, wave cabins are being prepared for occupation. Cruise ship Norwegian Epic will finally be handed over by the builders and, barring any more last-minute hitches, will leave the yard tomorrow for the last time. The 153,000-ton ship is probably the most significant launch this year as it will be the only vessel built to a completely new design. Carrying 4,200 passengers, it will be NCL's biggest by far, and its size exceeds almost every other [...]

Who is starting Epic fires?

Big shock when I read this headline on Cruise Critic. Has the billionaire boss of Carnival Cruise Corporation become so worried about the impending launch of Norwegian Epic that he has resorted to dirty tricks? Yet another fire - the third in a few weeks - has been reported on board the new ship in the STX Europe yard at Nantes, in France. Then I realised I was suffering from a temporary bout of dyslexia, and it was not Micky Arison under suspicion, but arson. The latest blaze is said to have broken out in air conditioning plant while yard [...]

Royal teas for the Royalty

I completed my tour of all the dining options on board Azura with an evening in the Verona trattoria. A bustling self-service cafe by day, it is transformed into a waiter-service restaurant at night, offering traditional Italian specialities, and imposing a surcharge only for extravagances such as the stone-cooked steak, which passengers grill to choice at their tables. It was a pleasant experience - made better by the fact that we could enjoy watching the sunset from our window table on Deck 15, rather than being stuck at a mid-restaurant table in the Meridian on Deck 6. All in all, [...]

MCA holds ‘unsafe’ cruise ship

Passengers from the cruise ship Vistamar have been transferred to Dublin while the vessel remains impounded in Belfast, undergoing repairs demanded by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. A snap inspection revealed several breaches of safety code, including missing and broken fire doors, and inadequate PA systems and emergency lights for lifeboats. The ship, built in 1989, carries 290 passengers and is operated by German company Plantours. It is currently in the middle of a round-Britain cruise and docked in Belfast on Wednesday en route from Invergordon in Scotland. An MCA inspection of the ship in London in 2006 also found [...]

Two cruise rescues in one day

Who says lightning never strikes twice? Not the Falmouth Coastguard, that's for sure. They despatched a rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose to the cruise ship Braemar, docked at St Mary's on the Isles of Scilly, to rush a passenger to hospital. The 79-year-old woman, who had a fractured hip, was winched from the ship and flown to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. The helicopter had been back at base for no more than a few minutes before another emergency call came through, this time for an 80-year-old passenger on the Braemar who had suffered a heart attack. He too [...]

Follow me to the Baltic

Wednesday morning sees me packing my suitcases again and taking the short drive to Southampton to board P&O's Azura for a two-week cruise to the Baltic. Six countries and seven ports of call in 14 days, visiting some of the most amazing cities in northern Europe. First port of call is Kristansand in southern Norway (not to be confused with Kristiansund, which I visited two weeks ago on Saga Pearl II). I'm hoping I'll be up early enough a couple of days later to enjoy the breathtaking sail-in through the Stockholm archipelago, and the following day we'll be in Tallinn, [...]
