Laugh a minute on Silhouette

A few more words about the Celebrity Silhouette launch before we move on . . . Ship launches can quite often be fairly sober affairs - at least until the Champagne bottle smashes, acting as a signal for glasses to be poured for all the guests. And while Celebrity's tradition of inviting breast cancer survivors to be godmothers is admirable, and always guarantees a moving ceremony, it doesn't follow that it's going to produce a laugh a minute. But there were smiles and humour in abundance this weekend, with Royal Caribbean chairman Richard Fain quipping that he had saved a [...]

What’s new on Celebrity Silhouette?

Richard Fain relaxes in one of the Lawn Club's Adirondack chairsPicture: Simon Brooke-Webb Celebrity Silhouette is more than just the fourth cruise ship in the Solstice class - which has already done so much to take premium cruising up a gear - it has a host of innovations to set it apart from its older sisters. It seems amazing that Celebrity has launched four of these ships in just over two years and eight months - even CEO Dan Hanrahan seemed surprised when he dropped that factoid into the naming ceremony. The first two, Solstice and Equinox, stuck to an [...]

NCL planning a luxury Haven

While Royal Caribbean keep details of their new Project Sunshine cruise ships under wraps, Norwegian are pursuing a policy of releasing details of their own Project Breakaway bit by bit. The latest announcement, made in New York at the launch of Condé Nast Traveller magazine's first issue dedicated to cruising, is a re-branding of the luxury ship-within-a-ship complex containing the best - and most expensive - suites. Out goes the Courtyard, and in comes The Haven. On the newbuilds, to be constructed at the Meyer-Werft yard in Germany, the area will have 42 suites on decks 15 and 16, and [...]

Marina makes her British debut

On the day that Oceania's newest cruise ship, Riviera, met the water for the first time at a shipyard in Italy, sister ship Marina was paying her first ever visit to British shores. There were very few Brits among the 1,250 passengers boarding the 65,000-ton vessel in Dover on Friday for a 14-night voyage around the UK and Ireland (and a couple of days in Norway). Most were well-heeled Americans who enjoy the casual country-club style of Oceania cruising - there's no need to dress formally to enjoy some of the finest food at sea. Marina has 10 restaurants, more [...]

What a fabulous hangover

I'm hoping to bring you pictures and a report from the lavish christening ceremony in Trieste for Costa's newest ship, Favolosa, but you might have to be patient. I had to decline an invitation to attend so that I could spend a week with my brother on his fund-raising cycle ride around the UK coast, and have been relying on Costa to keep me up to date. For some reason, communications appear to have broken down. An information pack was mailed to my home address, and an embargoed email with details of Saturday's event arrived on Friday, closely followed by [...]

Silhouette squeezes through

There's a big drama every time a new ship departs from the Meyer-Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, on its way to the North sea at Emden. A tidal barrage is closed, the River Ems is flooded, bridges are dismantled and power lines are pulled down to make room for vessels to pass. They get bigger all the time, but yesterday's conveyance of the 122,400-ton Celebrity Silhouette should not have resulted in anyone breaking sweat - the ship is the fourth in class and the three previous vessels have all made it 27 miles down the river without incident. Shipyard owner [...]

QM2 fails US hygiene inspection

Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2 has failed a hygiene inspection by the American Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, scoring a shock 84 out of 100. Fruit flies and cockroaches in a storage locker, sediment in ice-making machines, and a "filthy" swimming pool were among more than 60 violations cited in the report on the inspection, carried out when the ship was berthed in New York on June 10. The 3,000-passenger ship has passed every previous CDC inspection, scoring a perfect 100 on three occasions. It has only once before scored less than 92 in 15 checks carried out during [...]

Will the Queen borrow tycoon’s £50m yacht for her Jubilee flotilla?

With the Royal Yacht Britannia now retired and serving as a popular tourist attraction at Leith docks, the Queen is having to search for a suitable vessel to lead a 1,000-strong flotilla on the Thames, which is expected to be one of the highlights of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations next year. Hebridean Princess, the luxury cruise ship which she has twice chartered for holidays, is not an option, and my colleague Victoria Murphy reports that she has been offered the use of a £50 million private yacht owned by the business tycoon who made his fortune with National Car Parks [...]

How to blow your own trumpet

Yesterday I brought you P&O Cruises' new video pushing their 2013 world voyages. All very sedate and serious, with lots of information and vox pops and even a celebrity appearance from from Marco Pierre White packed into three minutes and 41 seconds. They do things differently Down Under, as this little gem from P&O Australia demonstrates in just 16 seconds. Turn the volume up loud for maximum effect. My thanks to cruise fanatic Patricia Dempsey for the discovery.
