Cruise Alaska in just two minutes

It doesn't come close to the full-on experience, but this time-lapse video shot on Disney Wonder gives a good idea of what it's like to cruise to Alaska . . . in just under two minutes. Click that button in the bottom right-hand corner and watch it full-screen. Shot by Matt Stroshane, it shows the panoramic Vancouver skyline and follows the ship under the Lions Gate Bridge, along Alaska's Inside Passage, around icebergs in the Tracy Arm and to the ports of Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan. I hope Hurtigruten will do something similar with the 8,040 minutes of footage which [...]

Watch Fantasy become reality

Disney's newest cruise ship is rapidly taking shape at a shipyard in Germany. And if you have never seen how giant ships are built in the 21st century - Disney Fantasy will be 1,115-feet long and 14 decks high - this short time-lapse video will amaze you. Not only is the 130,000-ton vessel put together from giant blocks each the size of a supermarket, it all happens under cover in a massive construction shed at the Meyer-Werft yard in Papenburg. Lego building has got nothing on this. Fantasy, a sister for new-build Disney Dream which was launched in January, makes [...]

That’s the Spirit! Thomson cruise ship comes top in passenger poll

A ship built 28 years ago has triumphed over newer, shinier vessels packed with modern facilities, in a poll to find Britain's most popular cruise ship. Thomson Spirit came top in the mid-sized category of the first Cruisers' Choice Awards organised by the Cruise Critic website, which has 700,000 members and contains 70,000 ship reviews. The 1,250-passenger ship, launched in July 1983, beat the likes of Fred Olsen's Balmoral and P&O's Oriana in the votes cast by UK cruise passengers for ships carrying between 1,000 and 2,000 passengers. It was voted best overall and best for dining, entertainment, service, shore [...]

P&O’s Oriana bashes into pier

They'll be taking a close look at Oriana when she arrives back home in Southampton this morning. The P&O cruise ship has a sizeable dent in the stern after bashing into a solid stone quay at her last port of call, Kristiansand in Norway The vessel was leaving harbour at about 5.30 on Wednesday evening when the incident happened. Port Authority operations manager Thomas Granfeldt told news outlet FVN that Oriana was pulling away from the quay when it made contact with a corner of the pier. A water pipe and an optical cable on the quay were damaged and [...]

Rough ride for Silver Spirit

A couple of weeks ago I enjoyed an extremely pleasant lunch on board Silversea's ultra-luxury cruise ship Silver Spirit, when it arrived in the UK at the end of a world cruise which had begun in Los Angeles in January. Newest and largest vessel in Silversea's six-strong fleet, Spirit carries a maximum of 540 passengers in sumptuous suites, with some of the finest restaurants afloat including the Relais and Chateau Champagne, and the Asian fusion Seishin. Guests can cook their own steaks on hot rocks at the pool bar, and there's the tantalising Italian La Terrazza trattoria. When they are [...]

P&O’s £500 million giant will be biggest cruise ship built for Britain

P&O is to have a new cruise ship for the UK - the biggest ever built specifically for the British market. Still to be named, the 141,000-ton vessel will carry 3,611 passengers and is expected to be launched in March 2015. It will be about 22 per cent bigger than the fleet's biggest ships, Azura and Ventura, but will carry only about 16 per cent more passengers. Announcing the project today, managing director Carol Marlow said: " She will offer 'the best of the best,' combining the favourite classic features of Oriana and Aurora, the choice and variety of Azura [...]

Titanic’s launch remembered

It has always struck me as odd that Titanic has been responsible for attracting thousands of passengers to the glamour of cruising - never more so than the day I spent in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where many of the victims are buried, with Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet's love affair playing on a ship's outdoor cinema screen. But there is no denying the lasting appeal of the ship and the story of its doomed maiden voyage. And it remains true that many cruise ships still strive to recreate the grandeur of its bygone era. RMS Titanic was launched down [...]

Olympic Dream is shattered

When luxury cruise ship SeaDream I was berthed alongside HMS Belfast at Tower Bridge a few weeks ago, there were hopes that its sister, SeaDream II, would be in the Thames next year for the London Olympics. A yacht broker I spoke to was confident he would be able to agree a charter on behalf of a wealthy fashion magnate who planned to use the 112-passenger vessel to provide accommodation for friends and business associates during the Games. The deal appears to have fallen through, because Travel Weekly reports today that SeaDream's planned visits to the UK and the Norwegian [...]

Tea at sea – and what a Grand place to relax with a refreshing cuppa

What a difference a couple of months and 24 days in dry-dock can make! Grand Princess, once the biggest cruise ship in the world, was looking a little tired and in need of some TLC when I saw her in Aruba at the beginning of March. A world away from the sparkling vessel I took a quick look around in Southampton at the weekend. Shorn of its trademark "shopping trolley handle" at the stern, and upgraded with new restaurants and other features which have proved popular among passengers on her younger sisters, Grand is like new again. A new Piazza [...]

Tight squeeze in Stavanger

When the cruise ships Grand Princess and P&O's Azura were together in port at Southampton on Saturday there was plenty of room for both - and Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas as well. Azura was embarking 3,000 passengers at Ocean Terminal, while a mile away at the Mayflower Terminal the newly-refurbished Grand Princess was welcoming another 2,600 or so. Today the two ships - and their passengers - are jostling for space in the Norwegian port of Stavanger (above). I hope the cloudy skies are not putting people off taking a boat trip along Lysefjord to see the spectacular [...]
