A new Adventure for Quest

I'm enjoying an Easter cruise through the Greek islands. We were in Mytilene, the capital of Lesbos, yesterday; today it's Kos, and tomorrow is Rhodes. Still to come, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini. The weather could be better - it's been cool and windy and there were showers this morning - but so far it has been a relaxing break. The only concern is the future of the ship I am sailing on; the plucky Spirit of Adventure is to be taken out of service in just over a year's time. Operators Saga, abandoning the unequal struggle to keep the Adventure brand [...]

It’s Magic – the beards take notice of what John Heald says was needed

When Carnival's biggest-ever cruise ship, Carnival Dream, was launched in New York in November 2009, its inaugural voyage was rocky in more ways than one. Seas were so rough that at one stage a departure from the Manhattan pier was in doubt, and when we did hit the Atlantic, it became apparent that there were some basic design flaws with some of the ship's amenities. The Lido restaurant in particular came in for criticism - not for the food, but for the inconvenient traffic flow of passengers and its inadequate capacity. It was all very well having a variety of [...]

Watch Grand Princess refit

An army of workers is ripping apart the interiors of Grand Princess, popular among British cruise passengers, as part of a multi-million pound refurbishment of the 13-year-old ship. Fans familiar with the vessel after her frequent visits to the UK - it sails from Southampton during the summer - can watch the progress of the refit on a daily video diary hosted by British cruise director Martyn Moss. There is also a growing collection of pictures on Princess's Flickr album. One of the most dramatic moments will be the removal of the ship's signature Skywalker nightclub - the distinctive handle [...]

Godmother Shirley is getting ready for her cruise ship close-up

Dame Shirley Bassey is getting excited about her new role as a godmother to P&O cruise ship Adonia. The 74-year-old singer will be breaking a £37 bottle of pink fizz - from the Hush Heath Estate in Kent - across the bow of the ship at the christening ceremony in Southampton on May 21. Not sure whether she has any plans to sail on her new baby, however. As she says in this video: "When the ship comes to Monte Carlo I shall be on my balcony and I will see her come in. I will jump in my car, [...]

Birthday celebrations for Azura

Cruise ship Azura celebrated its first birthday yesterday, with a signed card from godmother Darcey Bussell. A picture of the ballerina, who named the ship in Southampton a year ago, was on the front of the card and inside she wrote: "Happy 1st Birthday Azura! I wish I could be with you all. Have a wonderful celebration. Love Darcey." The ship reached Cadiz in Spain today on a 14-night cruise to the Mediterranean which will see birthday celebrations including a gala night party. Managing director Carol Marlow (seen above handing over the card to Captain Keith Dowds) said: "One year [...]

Europe to lose the Disney Magic

Families who fancy a Mediterranean cruise on Disney Magic had better make a booking pretty soon - the ship leaves Europe in September, and won't be back next year. After a winter sailing to the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, the ship will spend summer operating out of New York and then moves to Galveston, Texas. Mickey Mouse's 20 cruises from the Big Apple will be eight-night voyages to the Bahamas with just three ports of call - Nassau, the private resort of Castaway Cay, and Port Canaveral - and five-night sailings north to Halifax , Nova Scotia and St John, [...]

A Titanic night to remember

In just a few days' time ceremonies will be held to mark the anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic's 99 years ago; an exhibition of artefacts recovered from the wreck is in its final month at London's O2 Centre, and even the Cannon Hall museum in Barnsley - a long way from the sea - gets in on the act next Friday with a one-off show of the sort of clothes passengers might have worn on board. On May 31, the 100th anniversary of the doomed vessel's launch at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, the Ulster Folk [...]

Two QEs together for the first time

Elizabeth, meet Elizabeth . . . as two ships bearing almost the same name come together for the first time under the blazing desert sun of Dubai. Cunard's newest ship, Queen Elizabeth, arrived at Port Rashid on the return leg of her maiden world voyage to a welcome from her illustrious ancestor QE2 which has been laid up at the port since 2008, awaiting conversion into a floating hotel. Passengers on the new ship - launched last October by Her Majesty the Queen - lined the rails to get the best view, but will have been unable to get too [...]

Back in the UK: that’s the Spirit

Another cruise line is adding ex-UK voyages to its itineraries. Following yesterday's Braemar announcement from Fred Olsen comes news that Thomson Spirit will be based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne from May to July 2012, and in Harwich during August and September. The 1,254-passenger ship will sail 15 cruises from the two ports to a total of 39 destinations in Iceland, Norway, and the Baltic. There will be a weekend break to Belgium and Holland, and an 11-night round-Britain cruise, calling at Guernsey, Dublin, the Isle of Man, Tobermory, the Orkneys, and Edinburgh. Commercial manager Phil Gardner said: "We have widened the portfolio [...]
