I’ve worked out how to work out

Regular readers might be thinking I have kept quiet about the fitness training aspect of this cruise on board Celebrity Silhouette. Cynics may even suggest that while I have been enjoying continuous pampering in the AquaSpa, I have abandoned my plans to push my body in the gym. Not a bit of it. I've spent an hour a day under the watchful gaze of personal trainer Chris Arnott. Trouble is that until today it's all been a bit of a blur. Let me explain. I was a member of a gym about 30 years ago. I would go there for [...]

A real shock to the system

I wasn't entirely sure what was in store for me when I arranged to take a cruise designed to improve by fitness and well-being, to put right years of unhealthy eating and to kick-start an exercise regime which has been ignored for far too long. But the last thing I expected was to find Charlize Theron's younger sister attaching me to electrodes, plugging me into the mains, and sending muscle-twingeing spasms through my body. Sounds like the plot from a Hollywood blockbuster (apart from my participation, that is). The shock treatment goes under the name of Ionithermie, and is one [...]

Broadway at sea for the Tonys

Good Morning Baltimore - or is it good morning New York? The cast of Hairspray on board cruise ship Oasis of the Seas will be a part of the 66th annual Tony Awards broadcast on American television tonight. It's a first for Broadway's equivalent of the Oscars and for Royal Caribbean International, as it is for cruising in general - deserved recognition that entertainment at sea is no longer the refuge of faded end-of-the-pier performers. As well as the regular performances of Hairspray in the state-of-the-art Opal Theatre on Oasis, RCI have a West End standard production of Chicago on [...]

Proof that one size does not fit all

My quest for fitness began within a couple of hours of stepping on board Celebrity Silhouette in Corfu. Turning my back on the Mast Grill with its tempting burgers and chips, and the Cafe al Bacio Gelateria's selection of decadent ices, I headed for the AquaSpa to discover what was in store. First, a session with the fitness centre's Laura Cull, a former gymnast from Guildford. After a succession of questions about my lifestyle, she proceeded to collate a pageful statistics with the aid of a set of bathroom scales and an electronic device that hooked up to a foot [...]

Fitness centre? Spa? It’s time for me to lie back and think of England

After the patriotic British fervour of the last few days, it was time for me to go abroad again. Leaving behind a distinctly dismal and rain-sodden Gatwick airport this morning to fly to Corfu, I now find myself in a foreign land far more alien than I have ever experienced. Not the Greek island - that was just a staging post. I was on terra firma only for as long as it took to grab my suitcase from the carousel, find a taxi and drive to the pier, where I boarded Celebrity Silhouette. The ship itself is like an old [...]

Countess makes Jubilee history

A final word (or two) about the Queen's Diamond Jubilee before we draw a veil over proceedings. As promised, cruise ship Ocean Countess took the celebrations north of the border by becoming the largest passenger vessel to drop anchor off Fort William, at the head of Loch Linnhe. Marketing Manager, Mike Hall at CMV said "It was a memorable visit. Our passengers had been enjoying Jubilee celebrations on board and were thrilled to see that the last ocean going paddle steamer The Waverley was also in port. "It was fitting to be in the heart of the Scottish Highlands at [...]

Discovery joins in Jubilee fun

Cunard wasn't the only cruise line with an involvement in the weekend's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Passengers from mv Discovery were in the thick of the action during Sunday's river pageant. Some were on two charter boats which berthed near Westminster Bridge to watch The Queen and the hundreds of participating vessels pass by; another group watched events from a lofty perch on the 29th floor of Millbank Tower. Even those who chose to remain on board ship for the day as many of the boats from the pageant passed by their mooring at Greenwich once the parade had broken up. [...]

After Jubilee celebrations, when can Cunard say: Welcome aboard ma’am

A hugely successful day for Cunard, as their three ships were brought together in Southampton for the first time to honour the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, ended on a disappointing note when rain and low cloud prevented a flying display by the Red Arrows and all but obscured a firework send-off. Almost 7,000 passengers setting out on board Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, and crowds gathered in Mayflower Park, on Town Quay and elsewhere on shore could see only glimpses of the thousands of pounds-worth of pyrotechnics as rockets shot into the sky and exploded out of sight. [...]

Cunard’s Jubilee tribute in pictures

There were hundreds of photographers, amateur and professional, taking pictures to record the historic arrival of Cunard's three Queens in Southampton this morning. Some, like me, were afloat on Southampton Water. A lucky few were aloft in helicopters. There were hundreds in the flotilla of small craft escorting the giants into port. And there were thousands more on land. Here's a selection of Cunard's official images of the event, beginning with Steve Dunlop's beautiful shot of Queen Elizabeth (top) with the Red Ensign of the Blue Funnel vessel Ashleigh R, which was in the welcoming party. I know how long [...]

Majestic sight as Cunard’s three Queens line up to mark the Jubilee

CLICK TO ENLARGE As final preparations were being made for the Diamond Jubilee service of thanksgiving in St Paul's Cathedral and the Queen's return to Buckingham Palace by stately procession, three rather different queens were making their own way in procession into port. The three ships of the Cunard fleet arrived in Southampton soon after dawn this morning and lined up to pay their own special tribute to the monarch. The Queen herself had named Queen Mary 2 in 2004 and Queen Elizabeth in 2010; sister ship Queen Victoria was christened by the Duchess of Cornwall in 2007. Dozens of [...]
