Video previews of 2 new cruise ships

Two new cruise ships under construction; two new videos to whet customers' appetiters and no doubt stimulate advance bookings. First up (above) is Celebrity Reflection, the fifth and final vessel in the successful and sophisticated Solstice class, but with an extra deck of cabins, including some super-swish suites that feature ocean-view showers. The ship is nearing completion under cover in Germany, and should be leaving the shipyard in October. Watch carefully as the video shows sister ship Celebrity Silhouette's Lawn Club Grill and you'll even catch a glimpse of yours truly at the barbecue. No sign of me in the [...]

Artist’s view of Jubilee tribute

This is one of those occasions when the picture capabilities of this blog are inadequate. So click on the image above to get a better view of the three Cunard ships about to leave Southampton beneath a spectacular firework display at the end of their Diamond Jubilee tribute to The Queen. It's the work of maritime artist Robert G Lloyd, whose works hang on all three vessels, and it's probably the best view of the fireworks, which owe a little to artistic licence because on the night they were largely obscured by clouds. Prints of the painting will be on [...]

Big John is ready to stand aside

Could legendary cruise director John Heald be about to hang up his microphone and come home from the sea? He certainly suggested that might be happening before long when I met him this week on board the world's newest fun ship, Carnival Breeze. "This is the last new ship I will be bringing out. It's a young man's game and it's time to hand over," said Southend-born John, who is 47 and has been with Carnival for 26 years. A few hours later, on Facebook, he went even further: "I don't mind admitting that there were some days during the [...]

New cruise ship Carnival Breeze is loud, brash, and a breath of fresh air

There's a breath of fresh air blowing through the Mediterranean, and it's called the Carnival Breeze, The newest fun ship, taking me from Barcelona to Venice on only its second-ever voyage, is packed with innovative features which will soon be introduced to the rest of Carnival's 24-strong fleet. OK, it's loud, it's brash, and it's very American, but that is apparently a popular choice for a growing number of British cruise passengers, especially those with young and growing families. Sadly for us, Breeze will leave the Med at the end of this summer to cross the Atlantic and set up [...]

Silversea sets sights on Galapagos

When I visited the boutique expedition ship Silversea Explorer in Dartmouth a few weeks ago, there was speculation that the company was looking to purchase another vessel to bolster its fleet. Well they've only been and gone and done it. Silversea announced today they had bought Canodros, a company which operates voyages to the Galapagos Islands, and with it the upmarket ship Galapagos Explorer II. The vessel, which currently carries up to 100 passengers, will receive a major refit in September 2013 before being given a new name as it joins the Silversea fleet. Until then it will continue to [...]

Concordia removal work begins

Work has started on removing parts of the cruise ship Costa Concordia in preparation for the effort to refloat the vessel. The first steps are to cut off the mast and take away a water slide and the giant yellow funnel bearing the Costa logo. With those projections out of the way, a floating work platform will be brought in, and piles eill be embedded in the seabed to keep the vessel upright for its eventual refloating. Another step will be to extricate the rock that ripped a hole in the ship, in order to incorporate it into a memorial [...]

Cruise2Lose: Weight for it

Those of you who followed my exploits last weekend in the AquaSpa and fitness centre on board Celebrity Silhouette may be pleased to learn that I am keeping up the good work this week on Carnival Breeze. The gym is not quite as extensive, and my first attempt to do some serious work in there was frustrated because it was crowded with passengers hoping to win $500-worth of treatments in the Cloud 9 spa. But I have been back, and have followed the programme set out for me by personal trainer Chris Arnott. The pounds continue to fall off, slowly, [...]

Island loses out on cruise trade

Businesses on the island of Guernsey are counting the cost of 11 cancelled cruise ship calls so far this year. About 7,000 potential visitors have been lost because rough weather has prevented them being tendered ashore. The island had been hoping for a bumper year, with more than 100,000 cruise passengers arriving on 79 ships, compared with 63,000 from 69 vessels in 2011. Island capital St Peter Port has installed new pontoons for tender traffic, but there are no facilities to accommodate the berthing of large vessels - this year's biggest visitor is expected to be the 3,800-passenger Costa Pacifica. [...]

Cruising with Madame Butterfly

Passengers on Cunard's Queen Mary 2 are in for a new operatic treat from next month. Showings of a performance of Carmen in 3D in the 450-seat Illuminations Theatre are to be replaced by Puccini's Madame Butterfly. With memorable arias like One Fine Day, and the popular Humming Chorus, It is expected to play to full houses, according to Cunard president Peter Shanks, and RealD president Joseph Peixoto says: " There are few British institutions more respected and admired in the world than the Royal Opera and Cunard. "To bring this world-class production to Queen Mary 2 ensures it will [...]

Invasion of the towel animals

As I said farewell to Celebrity Silhouette this morning in Civitavecchia, the ship was being joined in port by Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas, Norwegian Spirit, and Croisières de France's Horizon - itself the former Celebrity Horizon, and at one time Island Star. Had I been there a day earlier I would have seen Carnival's newest flagship Carnival Breeze, whose housekeeping staff laid on a surprise for the passengers on its inaugural voyage. Anyone venturing to the pool deck early in the morning to stake their claim for a sun lounger (against the rules and all known laws of [...]
