Big discounts needed to persuade US passengers to cruise in Europe

The dozens of US media representatives invited to Venice for the naming of Carnival Magic have been surprisingly quiet since their arrival in Europe. Twenty-four hours after the event, few of them have so far reported on the event - and they don't have a bank holiday as an excuse. USA Today's indefatigable Gene Sloan was among the first to file and Paul Motter has written a lengthy piece for his CruiseMates website. Of the remainder there has been nothing yet to follow up their previews written before the event, although people like Anita Dunham-Potter and Chris Owen were busy [...]

Captain’s Epistle to the Corinthians keeps Spirit on the straight and narrow

After an exciting but very windy Easter Monday in Mykonos, Spirit of Adventure is heading out of Greek waters; next port of call - Messina in Sicily. There are two ways to get there: around the Pelopponese peninsula, which juts out from the Greek mainland like an outstretched hand, or through the Corinth Canal, a masterpiece of engineering which cuts through from the Aegean to the Gulf of Corinth and the Ionian Sea. Being Adventurous we chose the latter and passengers were treated to a Champagne breakfast to compensate for their early start soon after sunrise. According to Captain David [...]

A quiet night in Mykonos? No fear

Overnight stays in port are the next big thing for cruise ships, if Carnival UK's David Dingle and Azamara's Larry Pimentel are to be believed. They have both spoken of the advantages of "slow cruising" - more time ashore for passengers, and opportunities for the companies to save fuel and money. Captain David Warden-Owen certainly made the most of Spirit of Adventure's relaxing stay in the Peloponese port of Nafplio and commented next morning how pleasant it had been to enjoy an undisturbed night's sleep without the constant throb of the ship's engines. We'll be having another night alongside tonight, [...]

My big fat Greek adventure

Although I am fortunate enough to be able to spend a significant amount of time at sea, so much of that is visiting new ships, or making my first cruise on a vessel, it is rare that I get the chance to return to one I have sailed on before. But this is my third cruise on Spirit of Adventure, which became one of my favourites when I first sailed round the Black Sea on her in 2007. Following that expedition to Romania, Bulgaria and the fascinating ports of the Crimea, I spent another two exciting weeks on board in [...]

New start for Southampton cruises

Britain's busiest cruise port, Southampton, will see almost a million and a half passengers passing through the city this year. There will be 360 ship turn-rounds, each bringing about £1.5 million into the local economy. So it's high time there was an internet resource to help the visitors, whether embarking or disembarking. Now there is. CruiseSouthampton.com opened for business this week, and it is packed with information and advice - from hotel and restaurant listings to suggestions for places to visit and details of local travel and transport. There are maps and guides in abundance, and users can log on [...]

Europe to lose the Disney Magic

Families who fancy a Mediterranean cruise on Disney Magic had better make a booking pretty soon - the ship leaves Europe in September, and won't be back next year. After a winter sailing to the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, the ship will spend summer operating out of New York and then moves to Galveston, Texas. Mickey Mouse's 20 cruises from the Big Apple will be eight-night voyages to the Bahamas with just three ports of call - Nassau, the private resort of Castaway Cay, and Port Canaveral - and five-night sailings north to Halifax , Nova Scotia and St John, [...]

A Titanic night to remember

In just a few days' time ceremonies will be held to mark the anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic's 99 years ago; an exhibition of artefacts recovered from the wreck is in its final month at London's O2 Centre, and even the Cannon Hall museum in Barnsley - a long way from the sea - gets in on the act next Friday with a one-off show of the sort of clothes passengers might have worn on board. On May 31, the 100th anniversary of the doomed vessel's launch at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, the Ulster Folk [...]

Calm down, Michael, you’re on to a Winner with your Scottish cruise

Michael Winner has been singing in the rain this week, in preparation for a cruise off the Scottish coast on board one of Majestic Line's two wonderful converted trawlers. He flies to Glasgow on Saturday and is then planning to take a £1,000 seaplane flight to Oban to board Glen Tarsan - and he is convinced the weather is going to be foul. Gales and rain are at the lower end of his expectations; now he is even forecasting snow. According to his ever-entertaining Twitter feed, he has bought thermal underwear, plastic macs, Wellington boots and a sou'wester, and he [...]

Back in the UK: that’s the Spirit

Another cruise line is adding ex-UK voyages to its itineraries. Following yesterday's Braemar announcement from Fred Olsen comes news that Thomson Spirit will be based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne from May to July 2012, and in Harwich during August and September. The 1,254-passenger ship will sail 15 cruises from the two ports to a total of 39 destinations in Iceland, Norway, and the Baltic. There will be a weekend break to Belgium and Holland, and an 11-night round-Britain cruise, calling at Guernsey, Dublin, the Isle of Man, Tobermory, the Orkneys, and Edinburgh. Commercial manager Phil Gardner said: "We have widened the portfolio [...]

Cost of air fares forces Braemar to abandon fly-cruises to the Caribbean

Rising air fares and the onerous cost of Air Passenger Duty (APD) are being blamed by Fred Olsen Cruise Lines for the withdrawal of Braemar from cruising in the Caribbean - which has done each winter since joining the fleet in 2001. After April next year the 927-passenger ship will cruise exclusively from UK ports, and the only fly-cruises in Olsen's brochure will be sectors of world voyages and other long itineraries. General sales manager Lol Nichols says: "This was not an easy decision to make, as our Caribbean fly-cruises have always been popular. "The wide choice of ex-UK ports [...]
