Milly misses the boat, but still finds there is something to smile about

Best-selling author Milly Johnson (left) is trying to live down the embarrassment of missing the boat during her last cruise - she and her two young sons returned from a stroll around Malaga in time to see P&O's Azura sailing without them. The self-confessed "daft old bag," who triumphed in a round of Channel 4's Come Dine With Me, and earlier this summer was suspended over the studio audience of Keith Lemon's Lemonaid, had to make arrangements to rejoin the ship at the next port of call. But that was not until three days later, in a different country, as [...]

Dog watch duty for Pudsey

Simon Cowell's favourite dog, Pudsey, arrived home today with his owner Ashleigh Butler, after a trip to America and a Transatlantic crossing on the Cunard liner Queen Mary 2. Winner of Britain's Got Talent, Pudsey made an appearance on the US version of the show, and will soon be in rehearsals for the Royal Variety performance. During the seven-night crossing Pudsey and Ashleigh wowed the ship's 2,600 passengers with two special performances of their Charleston dance routine from the Britain's Got Talent semi-finals. Ever the entertainer, Pudsey couldn't resist performing for the crowd on the quayside in Southampton after disembarkation. [...]

Pudsey cruises home in style

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 is the only cruise ship equipped with kennels and it's the only one which sails regular scheduled Transatlantic crossings. So it was the natural choice for canine superstar Pudsey, who is returning home after a performance on American TV. Together with devoted owner Ashleigh Butler, the six-year-old dog - who won Britain's Got Talent in May - performed on the US version of the show last month. And this week, they have been on stage in the splendid surroundings of QM2's 1,100-seat Royal Court Theatre. It would be interesting to see what admirer Simon Cowell has [...]

Rock of Ages for Breakaway

Don't Stop Believin' - the musical Rock of Ages is to be the headline entertainment on cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway when it debuts next April. The hit show will be performed six times a week on the 4,000-passenger vessel. The high-energy musical opened on Broadway in 2009 and in London's West End last year. Big John is ready to stand aside

Could legendary cruise director John Heald be about to hang up his microphone and come home from the sea? He certainly suggested that might be happening before long when I met him this week on board the world's newest fun ship, Carnival Breeze. "This is the last new ship I will be bringing out. It's a young man's game and it's time to hand over," said Southend-born John, who is 47 and has been with Carnival for 26 years. A few hours later, on Facebook, he went even further: "I don't mind admitting that there were some days during the [...]

I’ve worked out how to work out

Regular readers might be thinking I have kept quiet about the fitness training aspect of this cruise on board Celebrity Silhouette. Cynics may even suggest that while I have been enjoying continuous pampering in the AquaSpa, I have abandoned my plans to push my body in the gym. Not a bit of it. I've spent an hour a day under the watchful gaze of personal trainer Chris Arnott. Trouble is that until today it's all been a bit of a blur. Let me explain. I was a member of a gym about 30 years ago. I would go there for [...]

A real shock to the system

I wasn't entirely sure what was in store for me when I arranged to take a cruise designed to improve by fitness and well-being, to put right years of unhealthy eating and to kick-start an exercise regime which has been ignored for far too long. But the last thing I expected was to find Charlize Theron's younger sister attaching me to electrodes, plugging me into the mains, and sending muscle-twingeing spasms through my body. Sounds like the plot from a Hollywood blockbuster (apart from my participation, that is). The shock treatment goes under the name of Ionithermie, and is one [...]

Broadway at sea for the Tonys

Good Morning Baltimore - or is it good morning New York? The cast of Hairspray on board cruise ship Oasis of the Seas will be a part of the 66th annual Tony Awards broadcast on American television tonight. It's a first for Broadway's equivalent of the Oscars and for Royal Caribbean International, as it is for cruising in general - deserved recognition that entertainment at sea is no longer the refuge of faded end-of-the-pier performers. As well as the regular performances of Hairspray in the state-of-the-art Opal Theatre on Oasis, RCI have a West End standard production of Chicago on [...]
