Peace cruise plan is a Noa-goer

Israeli singer Noa (left) , who was the madrina - or godmother - at the christening of cruise ship Costa Pacifica on Friday, is a campaigner for peace in the Middle East. She announced her own peace plan at a Press conference on the ship, prior to the twin celebrations with sister ship Costa Luminosa. "Costa Pacifica is the ship of peace," she said, and went on to suggest it would be wonderful if the leaders of the Middle East's feuding nations could take a cruise on board, with the proviso that they could disembark only after they had reached [...]

Tips row boils over on Cruise Critic

The subject of tips is always a hot topic among cruise passengers, and a email print-out spotted on a crew notice board in one ship's galley has raised the issue to Vindaloo proportions. A guest on a behind-the-scenes tour on Carnival Splendor saw the note, which listed the names of passengers who had asked for pre-paid gratuities to be removed from their accounts. A picture of the notice was posted on a Cruise Critic forum, and the response was immediate - more than 250 replies before the topic was closed. Many questioned why crew should know about which customers have [...]

We want to p-p-p-pick up a pirate

Passengers who travel on cruise ships like Swan Hellenic's Minerva are an adventurous lot by nature. Many of them could say "been there, done that" every time you stuck a pin into a spinning globe. Blindfolded. They choose to sail on the vessel because it takes them to destinations off the beaten track, and the entertainment on board is more likely to be a lecture on Grecian urns or Roman ruins than a re-run of Andrew Lloyd Webber's greatest hits. Their intestinal fortitude is hilariously illustrated in a little tale from Jane Archer, who has been mixing with these hardy [...]

Setting out on a mystery cruise

When it comes to cruises, my friend Steve Read at Sky Travel usually knows what he's talking about - he spends more time at sea than a ship's cat. For the next two weeks, however, he will not have a clue where he's going to be from one day to the next - he will be in board the Saga Ruby for Captain Philip Rentell's third annual mystery cruise. The only things passengers could be sure of when they booked this voyage was that they would be visiting 10 ports of call in at least four different countries, and at [...]

Did the ship move for you, darling?

German cruise line TUI showed a distinct lack of imagination when they took over the Celebrity Galaxy and re-named it Mein Schiff, which is German for, er, My Ship. They have got their act together now though, and put together an interesting money-back offer. Any bride who gets pregnant on her honeymoon cruise will qualify for the deal. With a completely straight face, the company's spokesman says they will require medical evidence to establish that conception took place on board before paying out. I can't, somehow, see passengers booking a honeymoon cruise on the off-chance they'll come back expecting a [...]

Clocking on with Captain Albert

Transatlantic cruises are one of the best ways to relax ever discovered, and the great thing about sailing to America is that because of the time difference, five days of the voyage can be 25 hours long. Whether you choose to use that extra time to sleep or to party, it's up to you, but either way it's heavenly. And there's no jet-lag. The downside comes when travelling in the opposite direction, and it's at this time of year that a flotilla of cruise ships is making its way from the Caribbean to spend the summer in the Mediterranean and [...]

One more reason cruises are a winner

Imagine the disappointment if you had a holiday booked at a beach resort in Mexico next week. The newspapers and TV bulletins are full of reports about swine flu and pictures of travellers arriving at airports with blue face masks over their mouths and noses. The world's health experts are advising against all non-essential travel to Mexico and your holiday is ruined. No time to find new flights to another destination. No certainty you'll get your money back or that the insurance will cough up to cover your losses. The holiday you have been dreaming about and looking forward to [...]

Wired to Sweet Baby James

I was glued to my armchair in front of the television last night for the first episode of The Wire. I watched the whole 60 episodes on DVD in a frantic two-week spell when I was confined to the house earlier this year, but now I know how it develops and ends it was fascinating to see again how it all started. Nothing to do with cruises, I'm afraid, except that the real star of the show is the city of Baltimore, and Royal Caribbean announced last week that they would be sailing cruises from there to the Bahamas and [...]

QE2 funnel fetches top dollar

That foot-high model of the QE2's funnel, complete with Commodore Ron Warwick's autograph, which was being offered on ebay has sold for a remarkable £250.50. I wouldn't be surprised to see it for sale again at some point, because the American buyer seems to be a regular dealer in classic cruise ship objects and ephemera. And if anyone else managed to liberate one of the funnels from the Dubai charity dinner where they were used as table centerpieces, then it might not be long before another appears on ebay.

QE2 funnel goes to highest bidder

There are all sorts of rumours on Internet cruise forums and elsewhere about the future of the QE2, which is sitting at a quayside in Dubai. None of us knows if any are true, and what the future holds. Will she be converted into a luxury hotel, as her new owners promised, or will she be scrapped because the money is not there any more? There's little point in speculating at this stage. What I do know is that the QE2's funnel is for sale on ebay - well a replica, at least. The 30 cm tall plastic model was [...]
