Together in Estonian dreams

Was it the sun, was it too much of the local Saku lager; or was it the fact that I haven't had a cigarette for two days? Whatever the reason, I thought I was hallucinating this morning. Walking towards me, through the cobbled streets of Tallinn, were Elton John and Hot Chocolate's Erroll Brown. The Rocket Man and You Sexy Thing, together in Estonian dreams? It took me a moment to realise that they were in fact John Ellis and Kennie Simon, lookalikes whose tribute acts have been packing the Manhattan cabaret lounge on Azura this week. Along with thousands [...]

Top cruises for less than £1,000

What was I saying last week about cruise holidays being great value? Here's even further proof - some spectacular deals for under £1,000. £679 - which includes flights from Gatwick - gets you a seven-night eastern Mediterranean cruise on the Thomson Celebration. Fly to Marmaris in Turkey on June 14 and then sail to Bodrum, Izmir, Mykonos, Athens and Crete. Go to www.cruise118.com or call 0800 280 2614. £888 is enough for a 13-night midnight sun cruise to Norway's North Cape - and no flights are required. Braemar sails from Dover on June 17, and visits Molde, Andalsnes, Tromso, Honnigsvag, [...]

Jolly Olly lines them up

He bounds on stage with the energy and enthusiasm of an unweaned Labrador puppy - and the golden hair to match. His subtly-toned pink jacket (if it's possible to have anything subtle in pink) strains to contain his girth and his excitement. TV's Olly Smith has been on board P&O cruise ship Azura for just two nights, but he has packed a week's worth of activities into less than 48 hours. The celebrity wine expert has been training staff - and checking how business is going - in the Glass House restaurant and wine bar which he devised for the [...]

The whole of history in one island

Such is John Julius Norwich's love for Sicily that he was prepared to hobble to a lunch hosted by the island's tourist board yesterday with his foot in a cast. Only hours after a hospital check-up on an injured ankle, he stood in front of a small gathering in the Italian Cultural Institution in London's Belgrave Square to tell us why he thinks Sicily is so special. It turns out that an international crisis involving Iraq in 1961 (some things never change) forced him to delay his annual leave from the Foreign Office until October, and in order to be [...]

Two cruise rescues in one day

Who says lightning never strikes twice? Not the Falmouth Coastguard, that's for sure. They despatched a rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose to the cruise ship Braemar, docked at St Mary's on the Isles of Scilly, to rush a passenger to hospital. The 79-year-old woman, who had a fractured hip, was winched from the ship and flown to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. The helicopter had been back at base for no more than a few minutes before another emergency call came through, this time for an 80-year-old passenger on the Braemar who had suffered a heart attack. He too [...]

Follow me to the Baltic

Wednesday morning sees me packing my suitcases again and taking the short drive to Southampton to board P&O's Azura for a two-week cruise to the Baltic. Six countries and seven ports of call in 14 days, visiting some of the most amazing cities in northern Europe. First port of call is Kristansand in southern Norway (not to be confused with Kristiansund, which I visited two weeks ago on Saga Pearl II). I'm hoping I'll be up early enough a couple of days later to enjoy the breathtaking sail-in through the Stockholm archipelago, and the following day we'll be in Tallinn, [...]

Another storm in a teacup

When Celebrity Cruises decided to base their newest ship, Eclipse, in the UK for the summer, they added a few tweaks to the menu to appeal to British passengers, and took the bold step (for an American cruise company) of providing kettles in the cabins. Readers with long memories may recall that when I was on board for the naming ceremony in April, I was disappointed to discover that, although teabags and milk cartons were provided, there was no coffee available. Acting UK managing director Jo Rzymowska told me that coffee was available from room service - although as it [...]

Blaze-hit cruise ship under tow

Luxury cruise ship MS Deutschland, crippled yesterday after fire broke out in the engine room, is now being towed to Bergen, where engineers will assess the damage. A spokesman for Peter Deilmann, the ship's owner, said that the blaze was quickly brought under control, and that bulkhead doors prevented it from spreading to other parts of the ship. Passengers evacuated from the vessel spent last night in the Quality Hotel, Eidfjord, just yards from where the ship was moored. Now, instead of sailing to Hamburg, they are being taken to Bergen and Oslo for flights home. The ship's next cruise, [...]

Storm in an afternoon teacup?

A generous pot Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches, warm scones with jam and cream, served by crisply-dressed waiters wearing pristine white gloves. They are all part of the tradition of afternoon tea which many British cruise ship passengers set their clocks by. It's one of the favourite social occasions of the day, often accompanied by a string quartet, a pianist, or even a harpist. I have seen passengers queuing for the best tables in the Queens Room on Cunard's Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria. The Discovery Lounge on Saga Pearl II was packed every afternoon during my recent cruise to [...]

Blazing cruise ship evacuated

An engine room fire has forced the evacuation of more than 600 passengers and crew from the cruise ship Deutschland. The luxury 22,500-ton ship was in port at Eidfjord, Norway, when the blaze broke out today. Per Fjeld, spokesman for the Norwegian rescue services, said there were no reports of injuries among the 364 passengers and 241 crew. He added that although it had not spread from the engine room, the fire was not yet under control. "It is still too hot. We first must get the temperatures in the surrounding areas down. "We are using pumps and hoses to [...]
